one needs to look at the selection of 1) pujara. 2) pandey.
next, one needs to look away from players like 1) ishant 2) bhajji. 3) rohit.
read abt the raw talent like muralidharan by name mohnish parmar but was demoralised by allegations of chucking n forcing him to change his style of bowling.

why should 1) 2) and 3) win form dhoooogi(the permanent fixture of srikant ????????) to further strategy of selfish selection nexxxxxxxxxus.
why shoud any good players SHOOT AT THEIR OWN FOOOOT.

well said !!!!!!
but
also tookaway sreeshanth..he couldn't pick one wicket in today's domestic match for kerla & against tamilnadu...then how will he picked wickets against SA...

Athula Sharma - I agree with you on this. But don;t tell me that Ganapathy or A Srinivas from Tamil nadu are better than Sreeshanth.

Dude, there were 4 people from Delhi, 3 from Mumbai and 2 from Andhra/Hyd and 2 from Tamil nadu..but you still keep on singing the same song that there is a Tamil Lobby..
A lot has been written about Badri and Murali Vijay. Lets look at what they both have done so far: Badrinath- True he did not do well in 2 of the 3 odis he played. So he is not to be seen in odis. But this guy has solid technique. His first class average is close to 58 and facing a torrid spell from steyn, he scored a fighting 50 in the first innings(his first at Test level). Do you expect him to score a double century on debut? He is one of the replacements for the big 3 once they retire and should be groomed accordingly.
M Vijay- He has performed resonably well in the Test matches so far. He needs to work on his patience to score big but he is technically good and has elegance. He can be a solid #3 for india once we lose Dravid Laxman and Sachin to retirement.
I do agree that we have three very good young batsmen who are going to be the backbone of Indian batting for the years to come in Kohli, Pujara and Rahane.. but they are still young and will get their chances in the years to come. But that being said I dont think you can blame the selectors for including Badri and Vijay in the team. These two definitely made it because of merit and not because of favoritism.
ps Raina's 1st class average is less than 45.. just shows that he is better suited to odis .. much like yuvraj
If at all anything, players from the South always have got a raw deal eg. Robin Singh, Rayudu, etc. Also if Manish Pandey was from mumbai he would have been in the indian team now.

I agree Badri deserves his chance. So lets let that go.
Vijay is a question mark. Tell me what wrong has Pujara done? Whats wrong with his technique? He has scored 3 triple centuries last season and a host of centuries this season. And to top it, he is a proper number 3 batsman unlike Vijay who is an opener.
Next what about Saha, anybody with an iota of brains would not include him ahead of Dinesh Karthik or Parthiv Patel especially when the series is against SA and when you have senior players injured.
What about the bowling, in a home series 4 fast bowlers???? Atleast one of them should have been Irfan Pathan bcos he gives an insurance against a batsman getting injured. As a pure batsman he is atleast 100 times better than Saha.
Re: Re: Lets get it straight
by vinay on Feb 11, 2010 12:41 AM
even it was dubious of srikanth of removing karthik from first test in favour of saha n now suddenly taking karthik in second test.
pujara was a better choice still rohit was preferred. even parthiv looks better choice than saha. better in keeping n batting both.
n in the playing xi, in the craze for going only with 4 bolrs v played with only 5 batsman. absence of one batsman cud hv been compensated by fifth bolr.

Since your whole argument is based on guesstimates (Pujara "might" have performed well.... etc.), I give it to you, that if Pujara was selected and didn't perform spectacularly, you'd have been asking "Why was Vijay and Badri not considered?" :)
BTW, I didn't hear you asking "why was Dhoni considered for this match?", or "why was Gambhir considered for this match?".... :)

My point is you can sack him for non performance if u want but dont blame favoritism!!
Re: Lets get it straight

Guys it's all luck, Saha was never selected for playing in final XI as a batsman but Rohit got injured at the last moment. I think it was Saha's day and that's why even Rohit gor injured to make way for Saha. What's surprising is why no reserve batsman was selected. Laxman was always a doubtful starter but still no reserve batsman and Rohit was included at very last moment.
Re: Lets get it straight
by vinay on Feb 11, 2010 12:12 AM
agreed abt badri. but what abt karthik. isnt it favouritism? i think pujara is better than raina in test matches.
Re: Re: Lets get it straight
by venkat v on Feb 11, 2010 12:15 AM
Who is the reserve keeper instead of karthik.. the idea is not to play him but have him as a standby in case Dhoni gets hurt during the game. I do agree that Saha could have just been retained in the 15 but seeing him in the 11 is totally absurd
At any time Saha is a better keeper than Dhoni. When Saha was selected in first eleven he should have kept wickets instead of Dhoni. Dhoni should have concentrated in captaincy. Is there a think-tank or a strategist advising the team.
Re: Saha should have kept wickets.
by Against Pseudos on Feb 11, 2010 07:48 AM
Amit Ray:
That's Dhoni's decision....
Now don't start going on a tangent that Srikkanth made Harbhajan bowl whatever number of overs he bowled, and it was Srikkanth who made Badri stand at point when he should have stood at midwicket .... etc.. :)
this is clearly injustice to the players like pujara, who is performing consistently. day in n day out, he is scoring big runs. he was the man of the series during the junior world cup tourney. he has been scoring big hundreds n has distinction of having scored 3 triple centuries in a span of 3 weeks. even srikanth acknowledged his feat during that time, saying a triple is a triple against whatver the opponents it may b.
still he finds himself not even considered for the team of 15. its not logical to omit players like him. players like badri deserve chance. but players like continues being selected. players like karthik geting chance even if they dont perform. but in pujara's case, he doesnt seem to hv any godfather in the team.
Re: pujara
by gaurav manchanda on Feb 11, 2010 12:06 AM
In addition to pujara, there is one another player named AMOL MUZUMDAR, who has never got even a single chance to play for India despite scoring lot of runs.
AMOL MUZUMDAR is the highest runs scorer in the history of Indian Domestic Cricket.
Re: Re: pujara
by sreenivasulu reddy on Feb 11, 2010 01:33 AM
Gaurav - I agree with you that Amol Muzumdar didn;t got the opportunity. It's very unfortunate that he suffered to regional bias.
Re: Re: What if Boucher gets injured during the game?
by vinay on Feb 11, 2010 12:09 AM
when saha was in the team, dhoni shud hv rested him from keeping so that he cud hv concentrated on batting n captainship to remove some of the burden of him.
Surprisingly, I had correctly predicted sachin, sehwag to be greats after watching them early, n same abt kumble, bhajji, dravid, dada (not gauti coz can't found his ex factor, but his late will n determination made him).
n look 7 gr8s discovered wll early
similarly i now bet on these unpolished diamonds with their ex factors...
alas can't find (players with even 50% of "greats" ) forget their replacements.
but some potentials a/s to my merit list
no 1 is ... manish pandey ... ( raw talent )
ojha ... consistent line length (than hyped mishra)
badri ... ( may develop
karthik ... ( has more fighting spirit than others
If something happens to Dhoni during the match, its not like the reserve keeper sitting on the bench can pad up, he can just take field as a subsititute. And we have no reserve keeper who deserves to play as a specialist batsman ahead of Pujaras, Kohlis, Rahanes. I would even play someone like Wasim Jaffer instead of Karthik.
Was this just so as to make sure both murli and badrinath can make it in the 11? (since had there been a reserve batsman instead of keeper, he may have made it in the 11 instead of either badri or Murli)
Re: .....reserve keeper in the home series ... !!!

IF something happened to dhoni then who would keep wickets. Is IPL the only cricket you follow? IF u dont have a wicket keeper reserve then would you ask Sachin to keep wickets?

Re: Re: .....reserve keeper in the home series ... !!!

why u have not though this when india visited NZ. at that time in test series there was no reserve WK. why u need in the home series.. even if u need then keep him for 16th players..and that can be replaced only with WK role only no with batsman role.
Re: Re: .....reserve keeper in the home series ... !!!
by allguysrhypocritsngalsrbitches on Feb 11, 2010 12:03 AM
so had laxman been fit, you think Saha would have still made it in the 11 instead of either badri or Murli? So that we have a wicket keeper reseve in the 11!
Re: Re: .....reserve keeper in the home series ... !!!
by Kevin ma on Feb 10, 2010 11:37 PM
When Dravid is not in the team there is no oneelse to Keep wickets in the team. If Dhoni gets injured during the game, the reserve keeper can pad up and keep for the rest of the game.
Srikanth is right - it is NOT a selection issue under the current system. Remember you and I see only the performances of an individual who get to play the match. The team, selectors and the coach evaluate an individual based on his performances in the net sessions. In India we have this age old habit of "selecting" the 16 and mysteriously being dropped without playing a match, this is because they evaluate performances in the net sessions as well against the likes of seasoned players, in this case they would tried to evaluate Saha against Zaheer and Harbhajan. He was never selected to be in the 11. The same goes for Mithun and Tyagi, they were being tried to see if they can trouble Sachin and Sehwag consistently. The problem got magnified due to freakish injuries to even reserve players. The lesson as Srikanth points out is not just to avoid marginally healthy players but also to ensure that if one is in the 15, he is match ready!.
Secondly, I do not believe that either Dravid or Laxman would have made a huge difference to the loss, Gambhir was in the form of his life and Sehwag was blistering as usual, If SA can get Gambhir and Sehwag, they could have gotten any Indian batsman, for that matter you could have had a world's XI and still SA would have run through them. Badri played his best given the circumstances and is definitely much better than Yuvraj.
Re: Focus on handling the specifics rather than selection
by Kevin ma on Feb 10, 2010 11:32 PM
Good comment. But he has to take the blame for being too cocky and not select a extra batsman. If you want to test the bowlers against Sachin and shewag one can always invite them to the net sessions. we did not need to have Tyagi, Mithun, Zaheer, Ishant 4 fast bowlers in the team when they play only 2 pacers in the XI. They knew Laxman is not 100% fit so they should have been more prepared.
