Srikkanth selected an unfit player in Laxman during selection which meant India had only 5 batsmen on the day of selection for first test against a number 2 team like South Africa. India should have at least 8 batsmen in the team because India includes 6 batsmen for a test match. So this way India will have 2 reserve batsmen.
Rohit was included a day before the match which meant India were short 2 reserve batsmen before Rohit was selected. So India were actually short of 1 batsman and 2 reserve batsmen in the team on the day of selection. All this means Srikkanth can't even count let alone select a team. Because of this serious fiasco on Srikkant's part India lost the match by an innings and were humiliated. Remember India is supposed to be # 1 team in tests.
Then there is the curious case of Dinesh Karthik and Wriddiman Saha. Dinesh was dropped for his irresponsible shots during the first test in Bangla Desh when India were down 5 batsmen and Dinesh threw his wicket away for zero. Now because Dinesh got 2 hundreds in Duleep trophy even thogh he was dropped several times in the match he has been selected again. Why select a player like Dinesh who has failed consistently in International matches? Why drop Saha after only one test without trying his capacity as a wicket keeper for which Saha was originally selected? Srikkanth himself said that Saha batted well in the second innings for a debutant.

The real issue is the timing of inclusion of young players. They should have been included against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh. Should have rotated them with Senior players. By giving them start against SA, you give them out for slaughter.

Clearly, Bhajji/Mishra/Ojha aren't working - at least Bhajji with either bowler is not. Bhaji is now just a single dimensionaly bowler...
Can we get beyond the Powar jokes and pick him?
He will atleast give more air and loop (which bhaji has lost), will have more variations and off late has also show decent form with both ball and bat. If not anythign we will atleast be spared of the horrid sight of an off spinner bowling round the wicket to a right hand bats..

Srikanth highlighted more on the injuries and tried to shift the blame to injuries rather than the selection. Everyone knows that Vijay, Dinesh Karthik and Badri simply don;t have the required skills to match the quality bowling backed by quality fielding. He shouldn;t compare Vijay to Laxman just because they are of same height. This type of tamil logic is not good for indian cricket. Also just because Badri is playing school cricket doesn;t mean he should be selected for indian team. Thanks god, he didn;t bring another tamilian A Srinivas saying that he is only 13yrs old. We have so many players who are far better than Vijay, Dinesh Karthik and Badri. I understand that Vijay and Badri are good against Bhutan and Nepal. But this is South African cricket team.
Poor Saha,Mithun got the axe without their fault.They are suprised when they got selected and are suprised that they were shown the doors. It's unfortunate that Regional feelings are playing a very big role in team selection. Initially it was mumbai lobby controlled this. Now Tamil Lobby wants to control this. Don't know how long these feelings will continue.

I would appreciate if players are selected based on merit rather than region. The players like Kaif, Pujara, Kohli, Pandey, Pathans, Rahane, Nair, M karthik deserve a chance . I feel they are better than above 3 players. Also this is the time to look at Harbajhan, I Sharma performances.

Mr. Reddy, I have a question for u? What u expect from a debutant, a double hundred?
Remember, Badrinath was playing against World's best bowlers. He has scored 7000 runs with 25 centuries in his domestic career. He is in the team bcoz he has been performing since last 5 years. Remeber, he has scored half century in his first international test inning.
Kohli and Pandey have performed only in a single domestic season but BADRI is in the team bcoz he deserve it. He has worked very very very hard to reach here.
Srikaanth has made only one right decision since taking charge of selection committee i.e inclusion of BADRINATH IN THE INDIAN SQUAD.
I back u in case of NAYAR, PUJARA and IRFAN PATHANS.

Gaurav - My question is about the merits for selecting a player. There are far better players compared to Badri,Vijay and Karthik. Everyone knows the reasons on why these got selected to team. As far as Debutants, I expect better show, determination and fight. It can be as many runs as possible.The topic is who deserves the chance and don;t select the players based on regional feelings.

Out of this list, Parthiv and Jaffer has already been tried at international level without much success (Parthiv averages 29 while jaffer averages 34 in tests ). Dravid is anyways a regular member of the team. Manish Pandey is just into his 1st season and you dont expect him to be picked into a test XI.
That leaves only Rahane ahead of the trio of Vijay, badrinath and Karthik. Considering that Rahane is just 21 and is more of a flashy batsman, its only logical that Vijay, Badrinath and Karthik get the nod for selection

Buddy, merely because one is playing in his first domestic season does not mean he should not be selected. Again, merely because a guys scores tons of runs in the domestic tournament does not mean he has the skills to suceed against international teams as we have seen highly successful players failing against international teams. The criteria should be merit and skills displayed. Manish Pandey displayed his skills in the IPL against top teams and backed it up with consistent performances in the domestic matches. So he definitely deserves a chance more than others.

Laxman was always a doubtful starter but no reserve batsman. Raina in test team when every one knows he is very week technically and doesn't belong to test league. Karthik recalled, he was doing well in domestic before also but dropped because he couldn't do well in opportunities he got. Just one duleep trophy performance and he is back probably as batsman but Pujara scoring tons of runs but not getting a look-in. Why was Saha selected in first place, keeping or Batting? If keeping then why he was dropped, he was never asked to keep in match. Saha doesn't deserve a place in team for his batting skills.
