NEW DELHI: IPL commissioner Lalit Modi is embroiled in numerous land deals in Rajasthan involving many prominent developers and business houses during the regime of the previous Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in that state, according to a source report of the Income Tax department. The document, the cricket-related contents of which ET first reported on Monday, also has details of his alleged role as a backroom operator who had the clout to swing land deals.

The report has details of how Mr Modi and his associates in business and bureaucracy allegedly flouted rules and manipulated state agencies such as the Board of Infrastructure Development and Investment for private gains. The report details investigations into many big companies operating in Rajasthan. Since the nature of the contents are largely speculative and based on market intelligence garnered by I-T sleuths, ET, as a responsible paper, is not publishing the charges levelled against Mr Modi or the companies in detail.

When contacted, the Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot told ET that the allegations were not surprising. “Lalit Modi and Vasundhara Rajeji (former chief minister) were hand-in-glove with Micheal Dalvi (former cricketer and associate of Mr Modi, according to the report). This was widely known,” Mr Gehlot told ET in an exclusive interaction after our story on dubious dealings in IPL appeared on Monday. “She used to send her bureaucrats with files to

Mallaya will support IPL becoz he can make money. In fact there were cases against him for not paying import duty for horses bought by him for racing. Intention is more important in criminal justice system. The iintention of everybody involved in IPL is not good. Poor Kapil. He concieved the idea for developing the game. All others have used the idea.

Sowri Rajan
Core Corruption in Central and State Government
by Sowri Rajan on Apr 20, 2010 11:48 AM

This time it is IPL which is in the news obviously for wrong reasons. Lalit Modi and Sharad Pawar and all BCCI officials should resign first. BCCI records, their assets and IPL ownership should all be thoroughly investigated.

More skeletons will come out of the cupboard. People have every reason to believe that politicians who work for the sport bodies have vested interest. There is too much money involved.

We all wonder why the Income Tax authorities have been keeping silent over three years now on IPL activities.

This is not a small scandal - a very serious one. If the Central Government wants to keep their slate clean, this is the right time to get rid of so called corrupt netas.

India is growing economically at a phase, we do not want issues such as IPL spoil the party.

Lalit Modi - if you have not done anything wrong, why you look like a 'criminal' and you do not see 'eye to eye' on your briefings.

Apt Example !
by sanath on Apr 20, 2010 11:47 AM

"apne pairon pe kulhadi maarna" is a very common proverb, but Modi has given us an apt example of it..an overconfident unnecessary meddling in a franchise's matter, has virtually smoked out all irregularities commited by him. Tharoor has lost temporarily as it is anybody's bet that he will return soon. The biggest loser in the whole episode is going to be Modi who has been asked to quit today. In fact it looks more like "kulhaadi pe pair maarna"

Why Modi to be kicked out? Just for bringing out the culprits? Why BCCI is scare of IT dept.? I strongly believe BCCI president himself has lot of irregularities and he does not want investigation!! He wanted Modi to go so that his irregularities do not exposed.
