Prediction of our bowlers performances in ODIs
by Nikhil Shah on Oct 05, 2009 03:34 AM

In 7-day series, we can afford to go with 4 bowlers in the 7 4 format. If we bat first 60% of the time we have a good chance of winning everytime and win the series. But the champions trophy scenario the loss to Pakistan hurt India and ended our run in the tournament. This has been true for a while where don't do as well in tournaments but not the case in a 5-match or 7-match ODI series featuring only one team to play against. The biggest problem is quality bowlers.

Can we predict the performance of ODI bowlers ahead of time before we invest them in trying out in the international arenas? Yes, by looking at the List-A economy rates here is the corresponding ODI performances. They magically are proportional. All bowlers with economy rates higher than 5.0 have corresponding economy rates are higher in ODIs.

ODI E/R List-A E/R
S Sreesanth 59 wkts @31.45 E/R=5.78 5.52
Ishant Sharma 46 wkts @31.40 E/R=5.67 5.39
Balaji L. 34 wkts @39.52 E/R=5.57 5.17
RP Singh 65 wkts @33.86 E/R=5.42 5.07
Irfan Pathan 152 wkts @29.91 E/R=5.25 5.06
Agarkar Ajit 288 wkts @27.85 E/R=5.07 5.00

Ashish Nehra 110 wkts @29.33 E/R=4.84 4.70
Zaheer Khan 225 wkts @29.18 E/R=4.86 4.84
Praveen Kumar 33 wkts @30.21 E/R=4.83 4.51
Munaf Patel 46 wkts @31.82 E/R=4.81 4.54

If you cannot perform in List-A it is not possible in ODIs as well.

Dhoni is the strongest captain so far
by Nikhil Shah on Oct 05, 2009 02:24 AM

If we take a look at ODI win/loss percentages of captains in the last 2 decades Dhoni has the highest percentage, about 60% wins in ODIs matches. Here are the approximate records so far

Kapil : 50%
Ganguly: 51%
Azhar: 50%
Dravid: 52%

Dhoni wins 60% of the time, and has used the talents of Praveen Kumar to his advantage. The problem with ODI seam bowling will be resolved once Zaheer is back and most likely Munaf.

Nehra, Praveen, Zaheer and Munaf have maintained their averages below 4.8 per over. For 50 ODI overs that is about 30-40 runs extra and has a bigger impact on the game when India chases 300 .

Even Zaheer thought Nehra/Ishant was a good pair. The ODI bowling lineup will consolidate after this loss and dropping RP and Ishant was not justified after the Sri-Lanka ODI win in the Compaq Cup which India won because of Sachin's hundred.

India substandard
by Guest on Oct 03, 2009 03:09 PM

Bottom line is that Indian players are substandard. There is not a single indian player, with the exception of maybe Yuraj that any other country would pick them in their national squad.

killing instant
by srikanth nerella on Oct 03, 2009 12:58 PM

Our Indian team does not have the instant to fight till the last ball. They need to learn this skill from Pakistan and Australia, who are masters in this skill. Alone batting and bowling will not win matches for india. They need to have the zeal to win matches.

What we want
by indira on Oct 01, 2009 08:16 PM

We don't want bowlere who can bat. All we want is batsmen who can bat and bowlers who can bowl in any conditions and situations and above all a captain who can come with new strategies when things are not going well for the team while playing in the middle and also one who doesn't give such silly and pathetic comments.

dhoni is good enough to be selected as a batsman alone in ODI. NO wicket keeping or captaincy skills needed.
