Dravid's brilliant knock
by caruthedath gopalakrishnan on Nov 17, 2009 09:31 AM  | Hide replies

Critics of Rahul Dravid - sit-up and think what would have happened if the Wall had not stood between the Lankan bowlers and the wicket. An immaculate innings from the Wall. Any team playing test matches should have some one like the Wall to steady the innings when so many wickets tumble in the first one hour. Do we have someone like him in the team already or in the making ?

For those who question Sachin's ability!
by naveen dhanerwal on Nov 17, 2009 09:24 AM  | Hide replies

Ian Bishop:-
He is much a different player now. As all great players, most great players have to adjust their game in their mid thirties; their reflexes would slow a bit, their instincts would be curbed. It is a natural tendency. So people are being very unfair when they criticise him for being a different player now. They should not do that because nobody can play the same at the start, in the middle and at the end of their career.
Glenn McGrath:
I still think Tendulkar is the best batsman in the world ahead of Steve Waugh and Lara.

Allan Donald: In my several years of international cricket, Tendulkar remains the best batsman I have ever bowled to.
Wasim Akram: Cricketers like Sachin come once in a lifetime and I am privileged he played in my time.
Brian Lara: If cricket is a religion, then Sachin is the only god.
Steve Waugh: There is no shame being beaten by such a great player; Sachin is perhaps only next to the Don.
You take Don Bradman away and he is next up, I reckon.
Barry Richards: Sachin is cricket's god.
Dennis Lillee: If I have to bowl to Sachin, I'll bowl with my helmet on. He hits the ball so hard.
Late umpire David Shepherd: If he isn't the best player in the world, I want to see the best player in the world.

Andrew Flintoff: His innings [a match-winning century in the Chennai Test against England last year] was a scriptwriter's dream.
The lad from Mumbai, with everything that has happened there [the terror attack], scores a hundred to win and then dedicates it to everyone in the country. Thinking about it, it was probably inevitable it happened. I enjoy bowling at him, as I did at the likes of Brian Lara. I think they bring the best out of you. Your margins for error are small; you have to bowl well to restrict them, never mind get them out."
Ricky Ponting: The number of innings of his I have been able to sit back and watch, I think he is an amazing player.
Look at his stats and records and it's quite incredible for someone to have stayed in the game for 20 years. He has set benchmarks for guys like me to chase him and get as close as we can.
If I had to last 20 years, I would probably be batting in a wheelchair.

Shane Warne: I will be going to bed having nightmares of Sachin just running down the wicket and belting me back over the head for six. He was unstoppable. I don't think anyone, apart from Don Bradman, is in the same class as Sachin Tendulkar. He is just an amazing player.
Viv Richards: He is 99.5 per cent perfect. I would pay to see him.
Mathew Hayden: I have seen god, he bats at number four for India in Tests.
His life seems to be stillness in a frantic world... [When he goes out to bat], it is beyond chaos - it is a frantic appeal by a nation to one man. The people see him as a god.
Brett Lee: You might pitch a ball on the off stump and think you have bowled a good ball and he walks across and hits it for two behind mid-wicket.

How much is enough for the media and ex-cricketers?
by Devils Advocate on Nov 17, 2009 09:23 AM

Both media and ex-cricketers are doing more harm by lavishly and unscrupulously praizing him that is totally uncalled for , whatever he has and hasn't done. The more they praize and hype, the more he fails , much only to the disappointment of the team and the fans. If they keep quite, he will probably do well without much ado. Thank goodness , Dravid is saved, atleast now.

Sachin Odulkar
sachin is not greatest
by Sachin Odulkar on Nov 17, 2009 06:23 AM  | Hide replies

He is a good player but did he do anything extraordinary to become great?Apart from few innings (136 vs Pakistan in Chennai, 135 vs Australia at Sharjah) did he ever guide India to victory in an important match? In World Cup 2003 finals when the whole nation expected a big score from him to beat Australia, he got out in the very first over for four. Again in this World Cup match against Sri Lanka he went out for a duck. Can we think of a World Cup or Champions Trophy or a great Test victory, which was achieved because of Sachin? If he were a great player he would have excelled in the toughest conditions and in big stages.Compare Sachin’s record to that of Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting. Waugh was part of two World Cup winning squads – one as a captain and other as a player. Just recall the innings he played against South Africa during the 1999 World Cup. That is what is called great innings – showing class when the odds are cast highly unfavorable to you. Also take Ricky Ponting – 3 World Cup victories – 2 as captain and 1 as a player. The innings he played against India during the World Cup final is just sufficient to make him great. The grand stage – World Cup final – and he delivered with unbeaten 140. Waugh and Ponting are great cricketers but not Sachin by any yardsticks. If one player is considered as a great player then he should have the capacity to lift the team at time of crisis and during important matches. Sachin fails to rise durin

Mate, Australia are exceptional! And that you can see in their records. No other team has won as many matches as they have won. So, can you say that Michle Clark, Bred Haddin, Demian Martin, Symonds are all better players than Lara or Sachin?
Lara too couldn't win a WC for his country! He even couldn't guide them in to a final. So wasn't he great player? Cricket is a tema game dude. Sometimes you tried your best but still you find yourself in a losing side, why because of other's poor performances.
Ponting won 3 world cups because of the perfect team for he has played so far. Let's him play in Indian team and see if he still can win matches like he has won for Australia? There are many great playes won has take retirment without wining a world cup. But that doesn't make their brilliant efforts less important! New Zealand, SA, England have never won a world cup but they have prodeced many a great players, like Botthom, Headly, Alan Donald, Hency Cronye, Pollock, Flintof, Gooch and a lot more.
Will you say that all they weren't great players?
At least I dare not!

How can you compare apples and oranges....
by Ashish Kanekar on Nov 17, 2009 06:10 AM  | Hide replies

Greatest asian sportsman...?

How can one say a cricketer who has played for 20 years is better than for example Japanese gymnast Akinori Nakayama who won 6 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals including 2 mens team championship titles at the 1968 and 1972 Olympic games.

Cricket is a team game dude! If you have a good teamthat play as a unit, you win, else you lose. Sachin has done the great work many a times but you can't win always, so in a team you need the supports of others then!
The best examples of this is a match between Australia and South Africa & India vs Australia in recent series. In first match Ponting played a gem of 165 runs on just 111 balls but all his brilliant effort went in vain and the same happened with Tendulker when he made 175 runs on just 141 balls but all in vain!
Why, they were playing in a team and rest 10 members put them down by their performances!
Am I right?

All I meant was it is harder to compare across different sports.

Even in cricket it is unfair/wrong to say that Sachin is a better batsman than McGrath is a bowler or even Lara is a better batsman than his own teammate Ambrose is a bowler.

Let us just accept that they are all very, very good in what they do.

I will tell u how to compare apples and oranges... how many people took up gymnastics after gymnast Akinori Nakayama won those golds..now check how many people took up cricket as a career choice after Tendulkar...
Its about how u can inspire a generation .. Sachin did tht.. ;)

And...sorry for being out of track! It was about calling him the best sportsperson, so don't you think him a great sportsperson? e has nevern been in any kind of controversy, has set great examples for youth, has a great records under his belt, a soft spoken person he really is, don't you think Srinath is wrong in calling him the best sportsperson? There may be a lot more and nobody can deny them too.
