Joy of listening to the radio
by Vasu Reddy on Jul 18, 2009 09:47 PM  | Hide replies

What I remember the most as a kid was the joy of listening to Gavaskar, Viswanath, Engineer and others bat and Bedi, Prasanna and Chandrasekar bowl and most wonderful moments when Solkar catches from close range.

Sunil Gavaskar in whatever frame people want to remember, he delivered great joy in battling with some of the greatest players from around the world, and made people notice the Indian team. The first and foremost accomplishment of the team with these great cricketers was to start being in the game for 5 days. They set benchmarks for the next generation of cricketers who continue to better the performances.

OPINIONATED FOOLS STILL ABOUND...
by Ashok Lulla on Jul 18, 2009 12:15 PM

In India who say he played only for records, that India seldom won many matches off his bat, that he was a dull cricketer, one who knew how to take care of himself, and so on and so forth. This one match, and one innings shows that while he did most of the hard work in nearly every match where he scored well, the rest of the team, with a few exceptions, could not do the little that was needed or expected of them.

I remember this match, my cousin and I were sitting and listening to the ball-by-ball commentary, and as the score kept climbing,
and India came inching towards an improbable victory, our hands were literally quivering,
such was the tension. There was a fear, that if SMG gets out, India will be in trouble.
(There are still more as-holes, in the several millions, who hold the same opinion of Sachin Tendulkar)

To those who are talking about India Shining, and a more confident, assertive new India,
you cannot imagine the hopes, the expectations
of hundreds of millions of Indians, who could never visualise a really bright future for themselves or for India. Sunil Gavaskar came to symbolise the yearnings of a nation that desparately lacked in self-esteem and authentic heroes. If you look back, you will find the Kapil Devs, the Srikkanths, Ravi Shastri, Vengsarkar, found their place in the sun, after Gavaskar had opened up the pathway.
There were others like Abid Ali, Roger Binny, who played their own small roles in the rise of
Indian cricket.

Historic
by Haramohan Roy on Jul 17, 2009 05:30 PM

I remember having listened to the radio commentary on a summer evening in Kolkata with rapt attention. It was a shock to see Kapil Dev, who had not played more than 10 tests at that time who had been playing outside the subcontinent for the first time, being sent in at that crucial hour of the match. I still believe that India missed a victory in that match due to Venkat's faulty captaincy.

However, that of course does not cast shadow on Sunil's historic innings on that day! What an innings it was!

Oxford dictinoary says that the meaning of "exhilarate" is "to make merry or to cheer or enliven". Please use appropriate words next time.
