Yes,Easily one of the best innings ever played by a Cricketer.I remember the radio commentary and pride I felt at Gavaskar's fighting spirit.

I rank his antiques as as a Star Sports Commentator to be on par with his feats on the field also. I particularly remember some match in an India - Australia Series when he was batting behind the Microphone. Richie Benaud (as is the case with all hopeless Aussies) was going ga - ga over Steve Waugh saying, "Steve Waugh this, Steve Waugh that, Steve Waugh marvellous, blah, blah. I Think He's The Best All - Rounder This Side Of The World."

Sunny quipped in with a smile, in that coooooool voice of his, "Steve Waugh may be the best all - rounder this side of the world. But Kapil Dev Is The Best All - Rounder In Thew Whole World."

I just saluted this man in my mind that very instant.

Gavasker's greatest series of innings by far was in the WI in 1971 when India beat WI it was a remarkable feat as WI was the best team in the world at that time. India's captain was Ajit Wadekar, there was another great Dilip Sardesai that helped Gavaskar. In the first match in Trinidad India was down five wickets for 56 runs and Sardesai made 221 runs to take India to 356 all out. India won that test.
Gavaskar made two double centuries in that series. A song was made for him. "Just like a wall the WI couldn't out Gavaskar at all"

After beating the WI in 1971, India went on to beat England again Gavaskar was dominant. It was remarkable to watch hm battle the pace bowlers in the WI and England.

Small correction Gavasker made one double century in that series. But yeah the SOng its true...And since that year there was fashion in WI to name newborn baby Sunil....as Sunny created his fan base in WI..later the same sunny named his sun after Rohan kanhai (WI)whose Gavaskar himself was greatest fan .....

He was the biggest Test scorer with the biggest number of centuries to his credit during his times. His record of scoring 34 Test centuries took 20 years to be broken when Sachin Tendulkar outclassed it in the year 2005. One of the only two players to score centuries in each innings, three times

I am blessed to watch Gavaskar batting in the Bangalore match when I was studying 8th std. He played a gem of the innings. No one could bat in that surface. A great batting legend. Long live!!! May God bless him to hit a century(100 years) in life also.

Gavaskar not out on 36 at the end of a 60 over a side ODI

No one recall Gavaskar's cowardic " an opener not out on 35/36 at the end of a 60 over a side ODI in which Vishvanath hit 74 runs " event in First Cricket World Cup in 1975 in a much favourable condition.

This match alone cannot become the yard stick to measure a legend's talent. Forget this innings.

Sunil took that occasion as a form of protest against the ODI cricket, which he did not like. However, later he scored many good ODI innings, including a century. It is ridiculous to say that Sunl was a coward when he faced the feared Windies bowlers without helmets!

I am glad that you know the Fact. It was indeed a protest from little master. Some NRI fans booed as the Indian pair walked out to face 272 Englands total ....Sunny got irritated and showed them...Later on he himself said it was not very mature reaction etc ...But yeah He was capable of scroing in one day too Later on Same sunny was holding fastest 1 day cricket century for India record...Later Azar broke it...anyways

You are a moron and have no knowledge of cricket. So shut yr stupid trap !!!
1. Those were days when TEST CRICKET was the real cricket and top quality batsmen in the world were brought up and bred under the training to play straight, and only those balls which were wickrt-to-wicket. Balls outside the wicket were to BE LEFT. In fact having a ball WELL LEFT was also consdiered a great skill.

2. One day cricket was just a beginning then.Great batsmen like Gavaskar, Boycott and Zaheer Abbas etc. did not want to play IMPURE cricket just to score runs in one days, as they believed in hitting with a straight bat along the ground and never in the air. Besides a loss in a one day was never taken seriously as test cricket.

So beggers like u shld do what they r bets at ie BEGGING rather than thinking they r intellectuals to write columns.

You must have to keep in mind that 36 NO was a reaction to the BCCI for not nominating him captain of India.
No doubt he considered himself above nation to fulfil his ambition and showing anger in that form of heroic act.
Madhav Mantri, a office bearer of BCCI was his close relative. These duo r said to be imaginators of betting in cricket.
Fact will always remain fact.

Look, Gavaskar himself calls it one of the worst moments in his career. By the way, India was chasing more than 330 in that match. He just could'nt get going, and if I remember what he wrote in his book, he tried to get out but could'nt. Well Sunny never had a great one-day career, but not much one-day cricket was played in those days. If I recall,Sunny played a total of 108 one day matches in his 16 year career, while Dhoni has played more in the 4 odd years of his career. Gavaskar was the one who made Indian cricket believe in itself.By the way, he scored an 88 ball ODI century at the end of his career. And if you really want to know what Gavaskar meant, you should talk about his last Test Innings. On a wicket that was turning square,he played an innings which Imran rated as the best he had seen. The tape of the innings is standard coaching material at the NCA.

Hi Sunny

Wishing you MANY MANY HAPPY RETURNS OF THE DAY. Un doubtedly you are one of the greatest players the game has ever produced. As a citizen of this nation and an avid cricket fan let me take this opportunity to thank you for all the wonderful innings you have played for the country.

But to be frank I admire you more these days than earlier for your sheer performance as a cricket administrator and commentor. I often sit in front of the tv only to listen to your views and opinions on the game being played.

Also I admire the way you pay back the Aussies and the English men in your own words which seems like sweet music to our ears.

Thank you very much for everything and may God bless you with many more wonderful years ahead in life.

Regards

Sajit Nair

It is a pity that someone remembers only this fact. There was a reason why he played that way even if it is debatable. The point is that it was not his lack of capability to make runs when he scored 36* in that match. There are other facts like 13 centuries against the most feared bowling attack at times when there were no rules to protect the batsmen from bouncers.
