He is not a perfect player for 20-20 format. He himself knows his condition thats why he is not playing. Any way, in his place allrounder mortaza will replace. I think it is good news for kolkata
i think ponting has realised it will be his last year with Aus team. either the selectors will drop him or he himself will opt out. anyway he want to make most of the time he has left with him. good decision. he can comfortably play IPL once the selectors throw him out.

Twisted logic. If what you say is true and he is planning to opt out of Aus team or knows that he'll be dropped, all the more reason for him to grab IPL chance and make more money...

he has already said....read the whole post "he wants to make most of the time he has left with him"...
I think He is avoiding IPL because He got very lesser price that he deserved to be. I remember last year before the IPL auction, Ponting & his team mates were fighting with ACB to let them place for IPL and cancel their scheduled tour.
