A different perspective
by Guest on Apr 21, 2009 01:25 PM  | Hide replies

I think the 7.5 minutes break adds an interesting dimension to the game. It presents an opportunity to restore equilibrium in the game, if it is getting too one-sided. An example being today's match between Bangalore RC and Chennai SK...Matty Hayden n Parthiv were going berserk and we were looking at a run chase of around 225 for B'lore RC. The break provided a respite for them, they regrouped and the target of 180 was a much more viable one than what it looked like before the break.

Also, it provides an opportunity for the spectators to loosen up a bit..just like the interval in movie theatres.

So I am all for it!

(1) The strategy break has NOT given any Equilibirium to any of the games so far .... All the games have been ONE-SIDED games. Pls follow the games before commenting ... its been boring one sided games, so not sure how strategy breaks are suposed to make matches more interesting.

(2) 7.5 minutes is not a long enough break for spectators to leave their seats and do anything useful like standing in line to get food n drinks etc , all they do is get bored and yawn for 7.5 minutes

(3) 7.5 minutes is too long for TV viewers .... no-one will sit and watch Ads, they will switch to better channels & maybe lose interest in the game in case they get hooked on to some other more interesting channel

(4) You are a fool

Great Article
by A Sharma on Apr 21, 2009 11:59 AM  | Hide replies

This article reflects the feelings of every single cricket lover ..... We are against unnecessary Ad Breaks ..... This break is not part of the ICC rules of T20 .... ICL follows the ICC rules & is banned , IPL breaks ICC rules & is NOT banned .... WHY ? Is this justice or is this Money Power is Right - ALL else is wrong ?

Do you think Zee TV has invested money in ICL to do social service? It is ICL which has resulted in IPL and money mongers like Lalit Modi.

Zee did not invest in ICL for social service, but as an investment into cricket. The word investment means some returns are expected. Hence I cannot say ICL was a charity event. Nothing is charity. Unfortunately this investment was a Non-BCCI investment and as BCCI was not yet again making some money, it did what it does best , it reared its monopolistic head and bit the ICL hard. The BCCI has a one point agenda, to destroy all who try to make some money from cricket and hence to retain its monopoly on every rupee earned from cricket.

While I dont care too much for Zee , but BCCI is a bully and needs to be taught a lesson about true democracy.

Its all for money, Honey
by Cric Fan on Apr 21, 2009 11:38 AM

Its clearly for money. But, the advertisers are wasting their money because now, everyone knows that its a 7 and half minutes of no cricket, so will switch channels, catch up with the news, elections and what not, instead of watching these stupid repetitive commercials. IPL & TV channels may have raked it in for now, but the advertisers would realize soon that users switch channels in a long break.... wake up Modi and IPL. Don't keep looking for short term profits all the time.

Why is a sixer called DLF Maximum?
by Hot Air on Apr 21, 2009 10:20 AM  | Hide replies

Have the IPL commentators forgotten the word sixer? They always use the term DLF Maximum in a shameless plug for the sponsor.

By 2010 the commentary in IPL will be like this " Good Morning listners, welcome to the first DLF IPL game, Success guaranteed by Citi. We hope you had a COLGATE moment in the morning and had a HERO-HONDA drive to the ground. As I see through my Ray-Ban glasses I can see Asian Paints Green on the ground and Nokia Connecting People in the crowds followed by the spirited cheer of KingFisher Beer and this is all "Seedhi Baat, No Bakwaas" coverage by "Aviva Life Insurance" and now to the cricket.

Good one Reddy .... Why not make a rule that in case one team is doing well they should be made to dance for 7 minutes with the cheerleaders and then re-start the game .... The point is that an unnecessary break spoils the momentum and lowers the overall quality of the game .... A team chasing a score of 225 to win could be 105 for no loss after 10 overs & then lose a few quick wickets after the break to lose the momentum and make the game one sided & boring ... BTW did you notice that 5 out of 5 games were one sided boring affairs ... so much for the side benefits of strategy breaks ... only benefit is for putting in more and more Ads

this lalit modi can sell his mother for money, rite now its just cricket.
was there any need for this break. this break is actually going to give them huge losses bcoz a lot of tv viewers turn off the tv sets or move away from matches during these breaks.
so if this modi boy thinks he can make some cheap money by selling cricket to these tv channels, then i m sorry to say this isn't gona happen this time

I guess the money being made out of IPL is not going directly into Modi's or any other BCCI functionaries pockets.

A major part of the money is going towards paying former & current cricketers as they get more money, other domestic tournaments and helping other boards(SL) as needed, infrastructure, etc., which we dont have full visibility into.

It is not that they individually make more money if they sell more ad spots, etc., but I am sure they have a handsome salary and other perks.

Look at other professionally run leagues like the English Premier or Football/Baseball league in America, they are in business to make money for all stake holders and in turn the people who run it get paid accordingly. But the system there is more transparent and we know for sure how much the Commissioner of these leagues make money.

I disagree that Lalit Modi will sell his mother for money .... Not because its against his principles , but because he won't get a good price .... However I do agree with you that the breaks are totally unnecessary and a big bore .... I immediately switch to another channel and then I've lost interest in the game by then

IPL Boycott!
by Nihaal s on Apr 20, 2009 09:53 PM

Lalit Modi just chanced upon a golden egg and now is playing Midas..very soon he will kill the interest if T-20 and there would be only ads to air in IPL with 1 over for each team team!
Its time people boycott these games by switching off their TV and tell the bastard "we are disgusted with these extra ads"
The TRP's will fall.ad people wont see any logic in paying so much and the whole system fails.
Let's do that!
