GANGULY's OMISSION
by tista chowdhury on Sep 23, 2008 04:45 PM  | Hide replies

Mr.Vengsarkar - come on and face this old Bengal Tiger - I challenge you on his behalf - I just want to know from the ex-chief selector that what will he do if Tendulkar,Dravid & Laxman all three fail in the Irani Trophy ? I am sure at least 2 of the 3 will fail.

It just means that they wont play the next irani trophy. The rookies are on test. So the question is specious as the Fab 3 are not on test. They are here for match practice. Dada was also not going to be on test in an Iranie tie. So the message is clear. The selectors believe, as do most non bengalis in India, that he's a spent force. Yes he was a force, but we'd rather remember him for his grace under pressure than for dragging his feet.
Asfar as the others go, they're also on notice, and the message had to start somewhere.

excellent. Saurav was a pleasure to watch when he gets going. He was a fighter all the way. We all remember him for his team spirit and never say die attitude. But now times have changed. We need young blood and we cannot keep the youngsters waiting for too long. The fab 4 has done its duty.

don't we have to become younger as a side
we have five players in their mid-late 30s
how long can we tick to all of them
since 2003 there has been talk that india is or will become no 1
but if u look at india's winning percentage which is the yardstick to judge any team, you would know that they have never been close to being no 1

True... as a team we still are no where near best teams. Some indivual performances can not make us world winner. That applies to all sports activities in India.

the sad part is that in india, there is nothing else but cricket to cheer for and there also we have won only 22 percent of our test matches in our entire history
sadly none of our golfers have ever broken in the to 30

we have large population...
but numbers only. How many play atleast one sports? You can count crowd over here. I bet 99 % have not taken red cgerry ball to bowl or have not heard nice sound of willow when struck by bat.
Tennis how many tennis courts we have mainly because of crowds pensioners play doubles than youth playing singles.

Make it a Limited Overs 'Test' Match
by rajesh r on Sep 23, 2008 04:45 PM

Do u guys think it makes sense to make these games limited overs events? No i'm not off my rocker, but chances are that personal performance supercedes team goals becoz of the nature of such 'observation' games. So if we were to refoirmat them as limited over 4 day hgames, there's be a more competitive streak. Presuming each day can take 90 overs thats a total of 360 overs or 18 overs per team. So give a max of 120 overs in the first day so that 'ball changes' and reverse swing and spinners can come into play and restrict the 2nd inning to 60 overs max. What say u all?

If any of the selectors had a little guts they would have picked him for the Irani Trophy, but they fear that his Irani trophy performance may overturn all their plans to throw him out of the National team.

India’s fifties for winning causes in Test cricket India won 38 tests since 1996
Dravid 19 Fifties contributed to win Four Zim quality opposition 15 Laxman 15 Fifties quality opposition 15 Sachin 15 Fifties Two Zim quality opposition 13 Sehwag 6. Fifties one Zim quality opposition 5
Saurav 13 Fifties contributed to win three BD one Zim quality opposition 9 Then why Saurav at bottom ?
Sehwag matches played 60 still going strong
Saurav matches played 109
Lone fifties seldom win matches as it need strong support from others batsman and bowlers. That is why I gave tons hundreds records to rate these batsman.

Big Test
by Joey on Sep 23, 2008 04:08 PM

This would be one of the Biggest Test for the Indian Players fighting against each other for a Test place. Delhi team wont leave anything behind and will come all out to impress the selectors, but would be a difficult task, at the same time Indian Batsmen would have to fight it out against I. Sharma, Nehra, Sangwan & A. Mishra.

last chance for the seniors
by Perfect on Sep 23, 2008 03:39 PM

I think this should be the last chance for the seniors like Dravid, Laxman to show some form. There are lot of youngsters knocking the doors of BCCi for their selection in the Indian team & looking at the future I think this is the best time to phase out the senior players one by one.

cricket's monopoly is stagerring
by mahim on Sep 23, 2008 03:09 PM  | Hide replies

cricket in our country(india)is a 24 x 7, 12 month a year sport.
whether our team is playing or not, whether it is summer or winter, whether they are playing in india or abroad, cricket is always from no 1 to 10 in the choice of sports in our country
won't it be great if we start supporting ll sports, i have followed cricket and tennis since the 90's and have followed all sports in this decade.
i get so excited when people in our country are talking about other sports, won't it be great if we support many sports like we support cricket.
i lived in oz for three years(a country with a popultion that is one-sixteeth of india but that has a sporting attitude more than a billon times bigger than india).
in oz all athletes are considered equal, not like our country where cricketers are on the seventh heaven and all other athletes low on the ladder.
you know there are many countries that are so hard to find on the globe that you need a microscope to locate them but they do a lot better than india in sports.
let's look beyond cricket in which are media raises ugly looking cricketers(like dhoni, sehwag, harbhajan, kaif, gambhir, rohit sharma, ishant sharma, etc.)into sex symbols as if they are much like the super sexy brad pitt(girls think that pitt is super sexy).

...oh and since when have Michael Owen, Christiano Ronaldo, Ronaldo, Maradona, Raikkonen, Schumi, etc...all qualify as 'handsome'? They were, and are, icons who're larger than life and feature in celeb shows and party with the beautiful people. Do u think the firang press woulda noticed em if they weren't champs?

well i am not talking of hype about anything but cricketers in india in our country
btw some of these names are hot as the girls say
anyway cricket is not a world sport
and we have won only 22 test matches since debut, indians need to get a life beyond cricket(best world to describe cricket in india is hype)

much as i'd like to argue, the fact is that ur right abt one thing: oz is light years ahead in sporting culture...but then they can spend so much on infrastructure coz everybody doesnt need to worry about where the next meal is coming from. Also, we are cricket obsessed only coz its the only arena where we have some achievement to talk of...so dont blame the game. Also don't blame the players for their popularity...blame it on our voyeuristic instincts. And pleasee...doh... i've lived around the world and champion sportsmen everywhere have the good things and the good life, and not just coz they're handsome. Everyone loves s winner....and btw, when i i open oz papers like SMH, i rarely see anything about chess players or stuff...it is unglamorous and glam makes the world go round.

all crazy stuff written by you
what argument - see the facts
ok oz have the infrastructure but we have 1.2 billion population
the problem is that we also hype and excuses
aussies are demanding and tough
not in every country can every sport be a spectator sport as only a certain no of sports in any country can be spectator sports coz of the facts that you cannot overdo in being a sporting spectator and in any case a chess for eg is not a spectator sport in any country
the problem with us is that there is overhyping and overrating with cricket in our country
cricketers are seen as if they are the best thing since christ
cricket is an average sport that is played seriously in very few countries
accept the reality
australia's sporting sucess has been every now and then more than any other nation and always greter than all other countries if you look at per capita population
whereas india's sporting sucess has always been lesser than any other country by per capita population
smell the coffee
see the reality
