by Jasper kim on May 31, 2008 02:23 AM  | Hide replies

On cricinfo I read that irfan & yusuf were half brothers. Anyone know what happened to yusufs mother?(since he is older, unless they both share the same mother). Can anyone clarify this for me? Thanks.

I think that they have the same father. I don't know but it may be that the father has more than one wife since it is allowed in theirreligion.

you are right.. Islam supports polygamy even though a majority of muslims don't marry more than once in India. I guess Irfan and Yusuf have the same dad and were born to different women so that makes them half brothers.

Dont worry ... Ojha has been selected as a tourist so that he can easily make way for Harbhajan singh when he returns after 5 match ban -- This is called intelligence :-) .

by Dharmendra Singh on May 31, 2008 01:57 AM  | Hide replies

Here's the exclusive secret about Bangladesh & Asia cup Team selection.
1. 6 players picked themselves by default. No discusiion.
Dhoni, yuvraj , rohit ,sehwag , gambhir , Isanth.
2. Sachin Tendulkar place was for grab due to his unavailability - 5 names discussed, Sourav , Dravid ,S. Vidyut , Asnodkar , Yusuf Pathan ... Dhoni/Kirsten prefered for Yusuf & Vidyut. Vengsarkar discussed ganguly but other selectors & Dhoni/kirsten insisted on good fielding ability. - Final result --Yusuf selected.

3. For additional 2 batsman as reserve in middle order , Following names were discussed :- Venugopal, Robin uthappa, suresh raina , s. badrinath , abhishek nayar .
-- Robin uthappa preserved due to experience & backing from a south selector & quota for karnataka inplace of dravid. Suresh raina preferred due to age , experience & domestic performance other than IPL . S. badrinath lost due to age factor. Abhishek nayar due to lack of experience.

4. 2 bowling allrounder positions discussed :- Names Irfan pathan , Laxmi shukla , Ajit agarkar , Praveen kumar , Joginder sharma ,------------- Irfan & pravin got through due to backing from captain -Dhoni.

I think it is a reasonably good selection. However, Ganguly should have been in based upon his ability, recentform amd experience. Ontheother hand, I thinkthey have one pacer too many.

India won in Australia without the experience of Ganguly. Why would they need him in a subcontinent match against subcontinent minnows.

trivedi n gony successful bolr.
by Daniel on May 31, 2008 01:23 AM

trivedi n gony hv been very successful and the most underrated bolrs. even munaf patel has been doing good.
rp and ishant hv been super flops on current form.
in the batting dhavan has been outstanding n consistent. dhawan/gambhir combination is good for opening slot.

Ability Form = Success

Obviously the team has been selected on "other" criterion. Its great to have youngsters in the side, but based on both current form and past record, Ganguly should have made it...

Hayden, Ponting, Jayasuriya are all past 30, yet make it by virtue of performance. Ganguly has done just that. If even then he gets dropped, then it is obviously for non-cricketing reasons.

what current form you were talking about? How much he scored recently? Its not only batting, Fielding, Running between the wickets, athletic nature also places a lot of significance when selecting a team in ODIs. For me, selectors did a wonderful job in selecting this team. Its the best they can do based on the current form.

wht is dada's form? his t20 batting avg is 25.92 with strike rate of 110. Is this great by any yardstick? He is doing well in tests, he should continue there till he can contribute and tehn take retirement else will face ignonimity of being thrown out of the side and tht wud be sad

Gangulydeserved to be in the team - whether one decides on current form OR ability OR experience. He does not get in simply because some of the selectors do not want to choose him. His non-selection becomes even more unusual when one realises than Sachin unavailable as Gangulyat thetop of the order with Sehwag would be a super combo and followed by Gambhir.

How can they select a team for Bangladesh and not have dada in it? He played quite well in the IPL too.

I think there is no player from WB. Who is going to decipher Bangladeshi chitchats?

Why not now? Without Sachin in the team, it is very unusual to also drop Ganguly. Not onlythat, Ganguly has been doing wellinthe T20 whichis og course different from ODIs BUT places even more importance on fitness.. Ganguly got a couple of MOMs including his last match so it shows that he is ingood form andshould be inthe squad but for the selectors' bias.

Only one doubt
by Inca on May 30, 2008 11:33 PM  | Hide replies

The new team is an outcome of good selection.
The only issue is probably with Robin. I guess a good no of cricket fans will go against selecting him. He has not done anything nice for atleast last 9 months. I would rather had prefered to see Sikhar Dhawan or Asnodkar or Venugopal instead of Uthappa. He has got a lots of limitation in his batting.

We all are forgetting the past achievements of Greats Like Sourav and Rahul!!!!Dhoni can boast abt his captaincy but he was fortunate enough to get Quality Players...who were matured by Sourav and Rahul.....Dhoni himself should consider his fitness as a worry on the team.........Selectors please please select player who perform under pressure rather than them who make hay when sun shines......
