But even Bradman's career was not entirely clean. In the first innings of the first Ashes Test of 1946-47 in Brisbane, Bradman had struggled to 28 before edging a catch to Jack Ikin - at second slip. To the dismay of the Englishmen, the game's greatest player stood his ground and was not given out, prompting rival captain Wally Hammond to remark: "A fine bloody way to start a series."

Bradman went on to score 187 and Australia won the Test and the series.

In this forum one pain point I see is participants abusing others simply because other's opinions dont match. In this forum we can present our opinions and need not be emotional when others have different opinions. There is absolutely no need to use abusive language.

One GOOD article on rediff...
by Underground Underworld on Feb 02, 2008 07:50 AM

Well written. Beautifully said.

Ignore all those who criticize, without sufficient justification.

It's a pleasure to read truly thorough English on this forum.

Unfortunaly, there are very few writer's of 'class' on these Indian forums.

Ignore the chaff SR.

Cheers Sriram Ranganathan!

What a stressful series.
by Samosachat on Feb 02, 2008 05:06 AM

I watch and follow cricket for relaxation. But it has become so controvertial and painful with all this non sense. fault lies on every party. the Indian crowd at Mumbai, Symmonds(major Party), Bhajji( Major party), POnting , hayden, Proctor and Buchnor and BCCi. Hope this does nothappen again. In those days Indians were losing but still the match was interesting and relaxing to watch. But the youngster's so called agression has ruined everything.

Well written article with a few glaring glitches!!
by Bhasmasur on Feb 02, 2008 04:13 AM  | Hide replies

Notwishstanding a few glaring glitches, this article is well researched and well written...

Let me commend the author on his good command over the English language first...too many Rediff columnists goof-up and either twist the meaning or make a mockery of the spoken word...

Secondly, the author has presented both sides and has tried to be as neutral as possible but his Indianness has given way on a couple of ocassions and that has led to a couple of emotion laced statements which stick out like a sore thumb..

Mind you, these emotion laced outbursts stick out like a sore thumb precisely for the reason that the rest of the article is so well written...the contrast is too obvious!!

Agree with the author that the exoneration of Harbhajan Singh has been dictated by lack of concrete evidence; that sort of evidence that could have irrefutably proved that he did use obscene language amounting to a racial slur..

That the final punishment for Harbhajan could have been more severe if his previous transgressions had been taken into account is open to conjecture...

Also agree with the author that Symonds could have easily avoided the ugly altercation considering the fact that Bhaji's light tap on Lee's bottom was only a token of appreciation...
It is indeed clear that Symo was spoiling for a fight and hence the churlish outburst...

The major glitch in this article is where the author takes a swipe at Ponting and Clarke and alludes that their word will not be taken a

The major glitch in this article is where the author takes a swipe at Ponting and Clarke and alludes that their word will not be taken at face value due to lack of credibility..
It is not what you think or anybody else thinks about the ethical standards of Ponting and company...you and i might give him a 2 on 10 when it comes to ethics...judging someone's ethical standards is always open to conjecture cos people come from different cultures...an Aussie might just give Ponting an 8 on 10 on the Ethics scale..
Also, i do not subscribe to the draconian view of the author where he feels sledging should be nipped in the bud...light banter makes the game more appealing to watchers and keeps the competitive spirit soaring...banter is what makes dull dreary draws worth watching!!

Cheers Dear author, write more...you have done a commendable job!!

Dear Bhasmasur
To which I would add the same comments in respect of your contribution - very well thought out and presented in beautifully crafted language.
In addition, I think you are very sensible, because I agree with everything you say!!
I often read these Rediff blogs to try to understand the Indian perspective, and I get flabbergasted and depressed by many contributions that are so bitter and, sadly, so gullible, because they accept at face value and as absolute fact what can only be described as interpretation of events or, worse, vitriol with no foundation other than fanciful generalisations that have no basis in fact.
Reading articles like this, and even more so, your blog in response, reinforces my belief that cultural divides can be conquered by sensitive, intelligent people who have a sense of humour (and India can boast amongst others one of the greatest, in my estimation, in one Harsha Bhogle, who is greatly admired here in Australia and has been for many years for his work on ABC cricket).

Thank you, Bhasmasur from NJ

Kind regards
Bob from Queensland (and, I hastily add, Bob "No Relation" Hair)

Agreed banter makes the game cheerful but it is this banter which has been fine tuned by the Aussie morons into what you call sledging a new word for abusing you opponents. Can we ignore what that foolish third rated tramp Mcgrath spoke to Sarwan.

Symonds said to Bhaji, Lee is not your friend, why pat him
by D S on Feb 02, 2008 04:09 AM  | Hide replies

Symonds said to Bhaji, Lee is not your friend (why pat him), he won't invite or respect your kind. Don't praise him, nail him.

But Bhajji is short-circuit and could not get the "indirect" message. CA knows what Symonds was telling and now he is on the scanner.

The point is if at all anybody who should have spoken to Bajji at that time it was Lee.Why the hell did Symonds involve himself in this other than to instigate bajji.

Well, thought this was going somewhere interesting but lost interest at the 'swifter to punish Asians rather than non-asians'. I'm sure Hansie Cronje, the SL spinner will be pleased to hear that.

Well, at least its gone beyond Indians and non Indians. Obviously at some point you decided you needed the rest of Asia too. Not suprising, must have been very difficult to ignore 1.5 billion chinese.

Hi Doogie:
I read somewhere in your excellent Australia - "Truth Hurts"!
So I'm not surprised at your reaction. If you think this was going somewhere .. THEN you must have followed Justice Hansen verdict too.. AND you must have figured out for yourself the moral right and wrong of both Harbhajan and Symonds.
Well well well.. guess what? The coming generation of Doogies are going to preach to the coming generations of Indians "look.. there's Harbhajan.. a dirty stinking player who was about to be banned, and eventually fined. Do you see any of our wings-sprouting-from-the-shoulders aussies fined? No sir! We have a Roy Symonds who is currently advising the high priests of the Vatican on how to improve their moral standards."
That's what is happening!
