Chappell Showing His Character
by on Nov 17, 2007 12:23 PM

Anyone can say things after it had happened and looking at the cituation. Chappell should have raised it or even resigned as Coach before WC if he knew that the team is going to fail... Well well everyone knows what kind of a person says this in interviews or autobiographies like these comments....

by Manashi Datta on Nov 16, 2007 11:24 PM

talent wise, man-for-man, person-for person, we were better than bangladesh. team india lost against bangladesh coz they did;nt play well as a team. they didn't function as a single unit. and as a head coach u suck to make team india as a single unit. you are so arrogant and stupid, how dare u disrespect our senior players(heart of the team) and telling us how bad they are?

Gregory was a great captain and good batsman &cricketer. But he proved to be a poor coach. He should have corrected the selection committee & BCCI or quit at the right time if he was convinced that they did a bad job.Post martem is of no use for Mr Greg Chappel or for Indian cricket. It was a sad perfomance of his team coached by him in world cup-flops to the core!!-pgpanikkar

Have u seen any selection committee or BCCI accepting the view of coach in Indian cricker? Greg proved his view was right when India won the 20-20 cup.

After chappell's comments nobody would like to coach the Indian team. This comment can lead to a bigger problem. Now that India is winning so there is no problem but the moment India starts loosing then the problem will look big

Will you say your team will lose before you venture into the field, if you are the coach? Chappell has expressed his displeasure for not getting his team for worldcup at the selection committee meeting, but the current selection committee comprising of a bunch of jokers didn't accept it at face value and got the result they wanted.

The problem Indians have is the "False Bravado" thing that is built into the culture.

Ganguly should not have asked Chappell what he should do with his career if he did not want to hear the truth. Here is what Ganguly did as a captain:

2002 7 matches 149 runs ave 21
2002/03 28 matches 913 runs ave 41.5 3 hundreds against Nam and Ken
2003 4 matches 177 runs ave 59 2 games against BD and 2 against SA in BD
2003/04 16 matches 412 runs ave 27.46
2004 13 matches 480 runs ave 40 2 fifties against UAE and BD
2004/05 8 matches 156 runs ave 19.50 1 fifty against BD

Any honest coach that sees this from a player who is supposed to be stronger in ODIs than in tests, he has to make a comment. If you tell someone you trust them and ask them for advise, they give you advise not just for then but for your career. Remember that Greg was 58 then and Ganguly was 33. Ganguly could have said NO to the advise. But then Greg could have handled INDIANs better.

This is the problem with not being self aware. Also, it is very normal for a player to feel the way he does. It is not normal for BCCI to react the way it did.

Living in the US means I dont get all the news from home. But the news I got about the stuff people did when Ganguly was dropped is ridiculous. I am happy that people are more civilized now with Dravid's stuff.

This is what a difference in culture does. Greg was brought in with a thought process that said "we need to build a new and strong Indian Team that PLAYs like the Aussies". That requires some serious changes.

Let us look at what Greg said and why they were right:

1. Indian team needs to be younger because we need quicker fielders -- Do you think we have a chance of beating the aussies in Australia without that? Didnt the T-20 team prove beyond a doubt that it is important.

2. He said there needs to be improvement and every player can improve and play in all environments. Dont we agree? Indians are again jumping up and down about the play in India because we won against a bad Pakistani team. What will happen when we go to Australia? Do we again go back to HOPING for some miracles?

3. He said that the team that wins always has a tear away fast man and some good line and length bowlers. Munaf had the opportunity to be either tear away fast or be a line and lengthe bloke. You need a certain physique for a tear away fast man. You see what is going on with Shoaib with his fitness because he carries way too much weight on his torso. A quick man is supposed to be lean and muscular like Michael Clarke. Indians do not understand differences between physiques

4. He said a team should play like a team. Put team first and do everything that helps the team. Forget whether or not you are doing well and getting runs let the team win.

There is another thing he was pushing for. Thats the 'Youngsters'. Everyone by now have seen what the youngsters did at T20 WC.
Somestimes, it feels like Chappell and the Seniors just dealt with the 'negatives' of each other. Unlike, John Wright. Its a open secret now that he was abused by the Indian players towards the end of his Tenure as coach. Not evryone is ready to accept it.

Jim,

cannot agree with you on all points. Even though some of them are valid, others are not.

Greg persued his personal disliking for Sourav Ganguly. Even now, he keeps taking pot shots at Sourav, which is totally unnecessary.

Greg also wanted to act as Selection Committee chairman of BCCI. He wanted to pick his bunch of players like Raina, Kaif, Venugopal rao etc.For this he created rift between Seniors and Juniors. If you look at current performances of these 3 youngsters, except Raina, others are performing miserably. Raina also got numerous chances and did not prove himself.

No team can perform only with young and inexperienced players. It has to be right mix of seniors and juniors. How many seniors we have in Indian team..? only 3..? then is it predominantly a younger team or not..? then what is Greg's complaint..?

I cannot just support Greg, because, he uttered few management jargoans. He behaved and talked like a dictator. His long term goal was to drop Sachin and Rahul after Sourav. He tried to pursue his own agenda and hence spoiled the good work done by John Wright.

Finally, coaches should talk less. Greg is good at making controversial statements, which is a very and unbecoming of a coach.

Chappel should not reveal such things to public
by Sudipto Ghosh on Nov 16, 2007 12:38 AM

It is totally unprofessional of Chappell to come out with inside talks out in the public.
I am sure there is plenty for the BCCI and the team to speak out about Chappell and Sachin actually did to some extent. If Sachin was 'disciplined' about it then I think the board should take action against Chappell as well!!

Mr. C has the guts and stupidity to talk like that when he is employed by Rajasthan Cricket. He is class-less fellow like most of Aussies, and he should be immediatley sent back to where he belongs.

Niranjan Shah of BCCI is saying that BCCI does not need to repond to such comments. Mr. shah probably does not realize Greg-baba has insulted not only BCCI but also the entire country even after he destroyed the team and players like Sehwag, Pathan,Munaf, and ..... BCCI should immediately pursuade Rajasthan Cricket to fire "Chappell" with "Chappals".
