Point is that Ganguly used to have his command.
In a position of responsibility one must have his own control over things.
Recommendations and compulsions affect performance if reasons other than cricket prevails.
Kumble has to resist the recoomendations based on considerations other than cricket.

Old Kumble will now wash his balls by scrubbing.
His long bat by soaking it in soap water.
Konnor fools will dance in joy.
India will lose games one after another.
Hah!! Bad decision!!!

Congratulations Kumble!!!
by mir ali on Nov 09, 2007 07:11 PM

Its good to know BCCI has made Kumble as captain for Indian Cricket test matches. Atlast he got the captiancy after being played for the country for last 17 year. Kumble has all the captiancy abilities and he will become a successful captain. I congratulate Anil Kumble as captain of Indian team.

Captaincy, Dhoni, Dravid, Ganguly and Kumble
by Prasad Shastri on Nov 09, 2007 06:48 PM  | Hide replies

A Captain can perform only if he is allowed to make decisions.

Lot is said about Ganguly's leadership abilities. He had the complete backing of Dalmia and BCCI and was able to overrule selectors.

Dravid, as captain, forget overruling selectors, he had Vengsarkar, Jagdale and other selectors accompanying the team and interfering in deciding on playing eleven and batting order.

When the last straw ..., Dravid quit. Now Vengsarkar and co will still not allow him peace of mind, Suddenly, Dravid is "one-dimensional" and does not "add value" to the side.

Dravid is not considered for the next 3 ODIs with Pak because as per selectors, "Winning Combination" must not be disturbed.

Of course we forget that we lost the last ODI, did not win, so we are struck with a "losing combination"

Now if Dhoni, the captain can lose a ODI after putting 321 runs on the board, should we start doubting his leadership qualities, his staying calm under pressure, his giving confidence to the players, his tactical acumen?

Dhoni, now, has the dubious record of leading India in the opposition's highest run chase by any team against India.

Now these things happen, A captain is as good as his team, but, but, but, then Dhoni is not "spineless" like Dravid and hope he turns it around for India, because as Dravid said, the "shelf-life of the Indian Captaincy is getting shorter and shorter and shorter.

Sachin hesitates and Vengsarkar is bereft so Kumble is the next fall guy.

Kumble, beware

Yes; I agree that Ganguly can perform only if people like Dalmia and some regional politicians support him fully right up to Paliamemt. Is this fair to other Cricketers?

We are not looking at captaincy material. We are looking for a in-form batsman or a in-form bowler for the post of Captain.
Forget records or the number of matches won by a captain. Instead look for traits of leadership ability shown by the captain be it field placing, backing a player, picking a team, griding the oppsition, tactical etc. in all this we have seen Saurav score more points than Sachin or Dravid. This is fact.
Sachin is a great batsman and cannot be compared with Saurav or Dravid is again a fact.
Saurav is a class player and so is Dravid.
Let us separate out the batting or bowling or fielding skills of an individual and instead look at his leadership skills. Surely batting/fielding skill level is mandatory but contribute lesser % as compared to leadership skills.
We dont have professionals ruling it at BCCI and that is the crux of the problem.
We might have a 'colonel' who has brought some semblance of 'sense' in Selectors after Kiran more destroyed it. But still we have the RajSingh Dungarpurs and sharad pawars who call shots without knowing a thing or two.

chk your facts--rajsingh is nowhere in the picture--he is on the run--and what has the great colonel done--dont insult an army rank with this nincompoop--his only agenda was to get sachin captain and now he has egg all over his face--plus his personal and commercial interests are far diff from lesser mortals like u or me.

Poor choice of captain. Still the worm is neck-deep in BCCI
by sundar on Nov 09, 2007 06:24 PM  | Hide replies

What test series are we looking at? Is our test captain to be appointed series or match or calendar wise?
To answer, we are looking at 3 tests against pakistan at home. We are looking at 4 tests against Australia down under.
No coming to Kumble, is he a sure player for test series in India, the answer would be Yes.
Is Kumble an automatic choice for a test place against Australia in Australia? The answer is NO.
So for tour down-under, we are back-footed right away by choosing Kumble as captain and thereby wasting one slot.
Kumble is a great bowler and his records and fighting spirit speak for sure. No dispute. But captaincy is a different cup of tea and when, where and for what simply makes this latest choice of captaincy a poor one.

Captaincy has positive and negative effects on individual.on rahul it was positive now it is kumble, lets check the result in Australia kumble has performed well lat time around and he is automatic choice.he is better than bhaaji how is not taking wickets and bowling falt and afraid to flight the ball.now two options has projected are karthik and kumble so it always better to play with two spinners on aussie track coz it is seen that nowdays aussies prepare falt track and it is evident in the test match they are playing.only there are fewy bouncy pitches and on bouncy pitches kumble is more lethal than any spinner coz of unorthodox style of spinning the ball

Kumble and Ganguly
by Reporter on Nov 09, 2007 06:04 PM  | Hide replies

A lot of regional fanatics from Bengal were trying to impose Ganguly on Cricket. Thank God! The Cricket bosses have used their brain and jettisoned Ganguly from Captaincy. Kumble or anyone, for that matter, is OK. At least, such people will work as a team.

Mr. Sandhip: He was not given a chance so far. So, give him a breal at least now. We will be able to assess better regarding leadership skills. Otherwise, people like Ganguly will take us for a ride using controversial measures.

Dhoni should be dropped from Test Side ..KUMBLE is the righit choice
by arvind on Nov 09, 2007 05:59 PM  | Hide replies

Kumble is the right choice for test captaincy .
1.His fitness is superb.(bowls 30 -40 overs in match without slight fatigue)
2.Performance is good at overseas(Proved this at austrlia last time )and india.
3.Match winner
4.Aggressive
5.Fighiter(bowled for india with a broken jaw to win match for india.)
6.Good knowledge of cricket.(one of the jkey memeber in team meetings)
however to the topic Dhoni should be dropped from test team because karthick is technically more sound and his wicket keeping skills are better .So please Selectors tell us where did dhoni fit into all these before yuviraj singh.

I agree with you that Kumble is the right choice. But, Dhonis need not be drpped. Instead, Ganguly should be dropped, so that the players can perform without political pressure.
