FOR ALL GANGULY LOVERS.
by clev on May 11, 2007 12:55 PM  | Hide replies

if ganguly was there in yest match India would have been all out for 200. He would have scored 50 in 120 balls & rest of the batsmen would have succumed under pressure of scoring quickly & ganguli fans would have praised him by saying "if he did not play india would have been all out for 150".

Naren is 100% right. Ganguly never plays slow. In both crickets his av is 40 . Moreso, he may have completed his 10000 ODI runs nearly 4 years back!

A Win!
by Prabu Girirajan on May 11, 2007 12:23 PM  | Hide replies

Chaps,
All said and done, A Win is a win. What is good about the win is not the opposition but the situation under which this win was achieved.

Before you read further, do agree that Bangladesh have got real quality spinners. On a slow low surface, I thought after scoring 250 runs, the odds were against India. To find itself at 130 odd for 5, the odds werent improving. But to win from that situation, is some kind of achievement. The proteas, couldn't do it on a similar surface in WI against Bangaldesh. I would rate this win by India as one of their very best.
In one of my previous post I had made some points for improvements. I would like to mention the same.

1. The fielding is one area which we will have to work hard. Robin Singh has got his task cut out.
2. Backing up the throws was just not there. So we conceeded too many over throws.
3. Bowling by Zaheer khan especially to Tamim Iqbal should show some improvement. Zaheer hasn't learnd from his mistakes he made in the previous encounter.
4. I would also like to see the keeper standing up to Tamim Iqbal. This is where I feel we will be missing Irfan Pathan. We could well use him as a Vass or a Brackan.
5. The top order needs to convert starts to big scores.
6. Sehwag, playing his natural game, should show some kind of restraing especially with the fact that on paper the batting looks very weak.

On a positive note.
1. I found Rahul's decission to defer the Power play very interesting and fruitful in that situation. The ball was hard and Tamim was enjoying the pace on the ball. RSD decided not to take the powerplay and introduced spinners which frustrated Tamim and resulted in his wicket.
2. RSD's decission to take Munaf from the attack after the later conceeded over 14 runs in his 7th over was a brave and sensible one. To give any kind of pace on the ball on a slow wicket is a crime.
3. Yuvraj comming out to run for Dhoni was again a very good decission. Ideally it should have been Dinesh Mongia. However this is where I felt that Ravi Shastri might have come in to the picture. He, with the decission to send Yuvraj has sent a clear message. "No Seniors / Juniors in the team. If one is best suited for the situation he will be having the task". Which was a very good move.

Hope the team works on the above mentioned concern areas and produce more results like the one achieved yesterday.
Cheers
PG

Do we panic when the big guns are gone?
by Rajesh Iyer on May 11, 2007 12:08 PM

Yesterday's match was won by a Young Indian team which did not have the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Saurav Ganguly.

Well, had Tendulkar and Ganguly been there, maybe the scenario could have been a bit different. Maybe after the fall of the fifth wicket, India would have gone on to lose the match. Well I don't blame this on Tendulkar or Ganguly. It is the team to be blamed.

India still believe that if Tendulkar or Ganguly is out, then the game is over. The attitudes of the Players who come in at the fall of the big wickets goes down. The opposing team's tail is up and they get on and have a crack at the other low-rated batsmen. It is after the fall of Tendulkar or Ganguly's wicket that the Indian batsmen run out of ideas. I still can't believe why this is still happening. We have many other match-winners who can win matches even if Ganguly or Tendulkar fall cheaply. The problem is that the Indian team tend to panic at the fall of a big wicket. But yesterday, even after they lost a few quick wickets, they did not press the panic button, took their own time and went on to win the match. I believe this may be the problem with the Indian team.

I remember a series where India, Bangladesh and Kenya played. India had rested the main players for the first 3 matches and the youngsters were given a look in. India won all the 3 matches. But when the seniors were brought back, we lost the last match against Kenya, though we went on to win the final.

This is was is the pressure of big guns and it's high time that we learn not to lose hope or panic if the big guns are gone. This is a lesson not only to the players but also to we fans.

Indian bowling worst in the world
by India on May 11, 2007 10:55 AM

Who are India's bolwers? Are they Dinesh Mongia, Sehwag, Yuvraj and Powar? Does India have a regular bowling attack like others? India's bowling is currently the weakest in the world. No wonder India lost to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in WC.

Why only dhoni been consider for the win in news and infront page of news paper its wriitten only about him and where does kartik stand he is no where in the news his contribution is overshadowed by dhoni's popularity why this kind of discouragement to other players he should have been equally credited media is unneccasary highlighting and making one person hero its time to realize real talent and encourage good performance irrespective of famous and popularity.

Augustine.. I agree with you... Even after consistent performance in SA Kartik was not given chance in any of the WC match.. Many thanks to media and Dirty Indian team management as well as selectors. I think he was the best perfomer is SA after Ganguly. media must not make mess of this useful handy cricketer. He is also better wicketkeeper than Dhoni as and always proved only his batting was lacking which has improved a lot and he can be one of the best WK batsman to INDIA also.

Mini-Hayden
by Freek Guy on May 11, 2007 10:07 AM  | Hide replies

Dhoni is India's mini-Hayden. Nay dont get that bad. I was talking about the physique. If Dhoni was pulled proportionally in all sides to match the length of Hayden, both would look alike in physique. He is the only Indian batsman who has that physique.
Jokes apart, I think Dhoni is a great batsman who has a bright future. Even in the World Cup, his performance was not that bad as compared to the others. That said, I dont think he is always suited at No:3. But he is best suited there when the track is flat and the ball comes straight onto the bat. The lucky thing is, nowadays all wickets are made for the batsman, so hitters like Dhoni have a good chance at No:3.
Kudos to Karthick, Yet another innings of responsible batting. Nice that you didnt wait till the last over to finish it off, else could have become harder. Those two 4's in the penultimate over saw us through. Steel nerves.
Having said all this, let me change my shoes with the detractors, Bangladesh is after all, Bangladesh. They are a no-force in world cricket. How come we showed the worst bowling performance to enable them to go on to 250? I was shocked to see spinners bowling the slogs and even the last one. Whenever, Zaheer appeared on the screen, he was hit back and front, left and right. So the win was on a typical subcontinent wicket, torn and worn out to suit the spinners. Here we have made victories against the very best in the world, so after all we have not done anything bug enough to be too proud of. Yet a good win to start with, for the fresh team. Lets put it at just tha

congratulations to team india and dhoni for winning MOM
DHoni can score only dead pitces of subcontinent he failed in WI and SA. Karthick opened innings in SA. won twenty20 match, he is a very good fielder in points and can do wkt keeping and also can bat No 3 to 7 any position. Karthick is scoring runs consistantly in whatever limited chanced he got.Karhick is better player than dhoni with positive attitude will do any thing for team whatever his captains wants..

Immaturity
by Mike Tyson on May 11, 2007 09:33 AM  | Hide replies

I DESPAIR AT THE COLLECTIVE IMMATURITY OF MINDS ON THIS WEBSITE, WITH SOME RARE EXCEPTIONS.

ONE STUPID BLOODY WORLD CUP WE MESSED UP AND THE PEOPLE ON THIS WEBSITE ADOPT A BLANKET POLICY OF HATING THE INDIAN CRICKET TEAM. WHY I CALL IT IMMATURITY IS BECAUSE YOU SHOW THE SAME CHILDISHNESS AND GO OVER THE TOP WHEN INDIA WINS AND THEN GO THE OTHER EXTREME WHEN WE DONT WIN. ISN'T THERE A SEMBLANCE OF SOME RATIONALITY, MUST CRICKET FANS GO FROM ABSOLUTELY LOVING TO ABSOLUTELY HATING THE TEAM, CANT ONE REASON?

FOR PETE'S SAKE INDIA PLAYED BADLY IN TWO MATCHES IN THE WORKD CUP. BIG FLIPPIN DEAL,PEOPLE WHO DO NOT UNDERSTAND CRICKET THINK ONE DAY CRICKET IS EVERYTHING AND HENCE THE TEAM HAS DISGRACED THE NATION, AS THE PLAYERS AND PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND CRICKET AND THEY WILL TELL YOU THAT THE WORLD CUP IS JUST A TOURNAMENT THATS ALL, THERE'S MORE TO CRICKET WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE GAME IN ALL ITS DIMENSIONS. IF PEOPLE LOOK AT THE GAME MORE OBJECTIVELY THEN THEY WILL STOP SWAYING LIKE YOYOS AND BE MORE RATIONAL WITH THEIR COMMENTS. RIDICULOUS COMMNTS LIKE "i did not put my TV on, Dhoni will score 2 runs in the next match" GET A LIFE DUDE, YOU CANNOT SCORE IN EVERY MATCH, IF YOU DONT WANT TO PUT THE TV ON , SULK FOR ALL I OR ANYONE ELSE CARES, BUT GET ON WITH LIFE AND LOOK AHEAD.

Aarey Aone, once WI and other mighty teams also struggled to win against India and they are not now considered as favourites! Sri Lanka comes to elite group (Test) in 1982 itself! And they played two world cup finals! Don't underesimate small teams like Bangladesh!
