Sachin is a genius, Laxman is special, Ganguly has the grace and timing, Yuvraj is gifted, Sehwag has the hand-eye co-ordination, Dhoni has the raw power.
But Dravid has none of this. Why is he so successful? Becuase of his attitude, the application, the determination to excel, to conquer. That is aggression. One does not need to abuse or remove one's shirt to project aggession.
If Dravid can be a great batsmen inspite of being less naturally gifted than others in his team, he can also only grow as captain.
Saurav was also a good captain, no doubt, but under Saurav we lost or drew against WI, Aus, Zimbabwe AFTER being one-up in the Test series.
Pray, where was the aggression? Was Saurav not a leader at that time? Did he forget to remove his shirt and wave it as a magic wand?
Saurav has 9 test wins against BD and Zim. Aggressive Saurav chickened out at Nagpur seeing a green pitch in home series against Aus.
Saurav is still riding the wave of nostalgia of the 2-1 victory against Aus in 2001 at home. After that when we toured Aus and won the 2nd test, we lost the 3rd and a series win opportunity was lost.
So when comparing Dravid with Saurav as captain one should not have selective memory.
Do be critical of Dravid, but on merit.
Under Dravid, we won our first test on Pak soil, our only test on SA soil, and our first test series against WI in WI in 35 years. Surely this counts for something.

I really agree with you.
Every individual is special. Ganguly is lucky since he got good young talent and players like Sachin, dravid, yuvi, sehwag, Lakshman, Pathan were on their peek form.
Now these people like sehwag, yuvi, bhajji, pathan lost their gile and lost their form and lost their places. Then they started playing politics becasue they lost place in the team and trying to praise Ganguly because he was their leader and mentor when they came into the team. Ganguly used them very intelligently to escape from his wrong dopings and team became a divided unit.
Dravid has a contrasting style and got the captaincy from Ganguly in this position and every person wanted to compare him with ganguly as his successor.

As you sarcastically commented, Drvaid is to be blamed for lack of form of all thos who were in form under Ganguly. A captain is as good as his team. Playing for your country should be motivation enough. If you require your captain to remove his shirt to motivate you , the less said the better, Of course Saurav removed his shirt AFTER India won the test.
Rahul Dravid has an average of 100 in the tests India won under Saurav.
People have questioned Dravid's decision to bat first against BD in the WC. Now why is that. Any Captain with 50000 runs collectively in ODI in his team would fancy batting first against a side like BD, put the runs on the board and ask the opposition to get it. What's wrong in that?
At 150-4 in 41 overs, with Saurav and Yuvraj having done the hard work, and Dhoni to follow, we failed to reach 225 and got all out at 190.
Now what was Rahul's faining as captain? Should he have sent a message to a former captain and a potential captain to stay till the end and not throw their wicket?
The great Zaheer who made a comeback after being given the boot by Guru Greg was tekn to the cleaners by Tamim Iqbal. This was similar to final of last WC where he and Ganguly were aggression personified and when Zaheer was hit all over by Hayden, he looked silly and Saurav was captain then. Now Tamim Iqbal is not in Hayden's class and still he hit Zaheer all around.

Its not sarcasting Mr.Prasad. its true. There are different ways of understanding the things.
My simple question is this. Why peole inly blames captain if something happens. As all we know captain only dont decide anything. Its the senior players and senior mgmt decides this.
Your question about why dravid hasnt sent a message to his senior player to play till the end and score. why do you decide that dravid didnt send any message. There were NEWS in the papers that dravid and greg sent a message to ganguly to accelerate the innings and ganguly refused to do so and wanted to bat slowly to get his score and finally after 44th over, he got out after making 50. Then what you will say to this NEWS? Who has to be blamed for this?

not altogether. mix young and old and let young grrom themselves mixing with seniors. read my below post.
We should play a mix of senior and junior players and have a rotation policty to groom the junior players and make them adjusted to the competetive cricket before seniors retires.
I would say Indian always should play with 6 4 1 combination in the test matches and among 6 Batsman, 3 should be seniors among Dravid, Sachin, Saurav, Lakshman and 3 should be juniors ( Jaffer,dinesh Karthik, Yuvraj,Kaif,Ghambhir,Dhoni ....etc). It doesnt matter even if these youngsters fails. You should stick to them.
But the problem is that we r not so patience with the youngsters. If they fails in 2 matches, we call them Idiots and ask to bring back the senior players. that why I talk about having patience.
Playing seniors is OK, but we should have a long-term plan to groom the youngsters before the seniors retires. We should agree that we have only 2 years with us before these seniors go off and we should use this 2 years very intelligently.

I was a part of 7 selection committee meetings.It is really interesting to see so many people sharing their thoughts.What they don't understand is that you are people who have not done anything in life and wasting your time for all the wrong reasons.
Dravid,Sachin,Ganguly,Sehwag have made a mark in their life at the highest level and I wud advice all of you to do your job ad try to make a mark in your life.
1) We never blamed sachin for selfishness or sehwag as a wasted talent when we had saurav suddenly all these players have become in a way ineffective under dravid, so dravid needs be blamed for all player's ineffectiveness.
2) Dravid needs to be blamed for lack of talent and ineffective bowling attack which is unable to finish off the games.
3) Dravid needs be blamed for BCCI unable to find the Coach for the last 4 months.
4) dravid needs to be blamed for Ford to reject the Coach offer.
5) Dravid needs be blamed for the WC debacle where the whole team is unable to play well.
6) dravid needs to be blamed for the lack of form of some of the players.
7) Dravid needs to be blamed for inconsistent performance of the youngsters.
8) Dravid needs to be blamed for not only everything he does, but for that he dont do. Pulling his shirt off. abusing the players infornt of the team, not coming to toss in time.
So the solution for indian team's debacle is kick dravid off and team will win from the second day.

u r absolutely right. 1) give ganguly captaincy until he retires at an age of 60. 2) He will be in the team even he is 60 of years because left front supports him and he is from Bengal. 3) Give him a bunch of jokers and politicians who always support him as a captain and play as a team no matter they win or loose.
4) once he decided to quit, make him the coach of the team by giving Jyothi basu as assistant coach, Seetharam yeechuri as Bolwoing and Dalmiya as batting Coach.

idea is not bad. comparing to tendu/dravi he is the front runner for captaincy. ignoring him is unfair, bias and unjustifiable. selectors should not compromise national interest before regional sentiments or compulsions. future kartik will prove as a dynamic captain if selectors repose faith in him to do so.

Dada was a great captain but we need to look beyond the trio as they wont last long. We need aggressive youngsters to be groomed when all these 3 greats are still playing and slowly find replacements for their batting spots too

it is any day better than the bowling we have now. Sreesanth looks talented but he will loose out soon Zaheer cannot be termed as a genuine fast bowler. Munaf 123 kmph Lets atleast once try some fast bowlers who bowls as fast as they can..
