Shame on DD
by deepthi madhu on Jan 23, 2007 01:39 PM  | Hide replies

Its shame that DD is playing such a dirty game in the name of cricket mad people. Nimbus played so heavily to BCCI and DD wants it for free!!!!! At the same time we should blame BCCI also, since they only looked for money. They should have thought of so many fans who even not yet heard of this sports channel.

My cable operator refused to carry Neo because Nimbus was asking Rs65 per connection X 4 months. Which cablewalla can afford such high charges and that too pay advance from his own pocket. It seems nimbus was trying to collect all the money in this series only.

It serves Nimbus right. Hope they go bankrupt soon enough.

Better live without lie coverage of Indian Cricket. Our boys dont perform else where to be of pride worthy that we can watch them in India. Money saved!! ALso Neo sports will be brought to justice by market forces. They cant charge Rs53/month and get away. They have to bow before Indian People . After all If thy say DD wlas are dadas, then they should look at their own backs and see if that's clean enough that they are not called dadas!!

INDIA or BCCI..................!
by raghu b on Jan 23, 2007 01:38 PM

Hi, this is not acceptable from CRICKET-fan point of view. Indian Govt should pass an Act on the Games events (esp. Cricket) to leverage the Broadcasting rights ONLY in India. Whoever the sponser or whoever wins the broadcasting rights, they have to obey this Govt Act to broadcaste LIVE Coverage with minimal Advert-free. So that the Doordarshan can have its cup of Coffee and the RIGHTS holder as well. First bash the BCCI, they are trying to dominate the Govt. If there is no Indian Govt, there is no BCCI. If there is no Cricket fan, there is no BCCI. Even though, BCCI is an autonamous body, it should share the broadcasting rights ONLY with Doordarshan as well as the Other broadcasters (who wins the BID) of all India participating Cricket matches. But, we have to think in the revenue point of view as well. So, the Act should give the leverage to BCCI on taking the decion about the percentage of Advert-free broadcasting rights to Doordarshan. Each one should be profitable in this contest including the Cricket-fan. Otherwise, we should bash the BCCI.

....what do you think DEAR Cric-fan.....?

DD Nimbus imbroglio
by N Kumar on Jan 23, 2007 01:34 PM  | Hide replies

I think this is a meaningless exercise... You go for an auction... And then get Nimbus to pay a fancy sum for rights and exclusivity... Then the govt intervenes and has a free lunch....

Let us do it this way... Let the court rule that arrangement with Nimbus is cancelled and BCCI should refund the money paid... Prasar Bharti can telecast the match live but no advertisements!

This would actually help the cricket quality in India too

Why only Congress Govt ? All political govts. are equal. First they create a controversy; then they will try to aggravate the situation crossing all limits; then they themselves come forward and suggest some remedy as if they have done a good job. We, the ordinary voters in the country are fools. It is time to shun parties and elect only person who can really deliver to the masses. Don't go after the party flags. Go only after one flag our great "thiranga" and vote for real sons/daughters of "Maa Bharati". The day is not too far. People are alert now.

Who is interested in Criket
by George Paul on Jan 23, 2007 01:30 PM  | Hide replies

I would like to tell you I am not interested in watching criket. If nimbus has taken contract let them show on any channel. If prasar bharati can afford the rate precribed by nimbus then they can broadcast. If BCCI wants to show its matches to whole country, it is there responsibility to choose the correct partner who has wide coverage. I dont think the poor man in street will be any benefit. one thing foolish game where whole day time is wasted by player as well as the people watching it. I think prasar bharati should simple boycot the matches and let the BCCI fall onto there foot.

no body is forcing you or anyother to watch cricket match...it depends on ones own wish what to watch and what not to. Well probably you may have liking for any other serial like...balaji's serials or for name sake any news channel..so whenever you watch those so during that time you mean to say that you are losing you productive value or country is losing productive value....

Nimbus should take matter to SC
by Kaushik Mitra on Jan 23, 2007 01:29 PM  | Hide replies

Nimbus should take it up with the higher court. In a democratic country like ours, this decision for Prasar Bharti to expect a free feed, seems dictatorial to say the least. Why doesn't Prasar Bharti cough up the money, if it wants the feed, since it has'nt come free to Nimbus.
Prasar Bharti is a shame.

let me tell you sir the prasar bharti is the only medium which serves our poor rural areas of our country. It is easy to say that all the money in the game should be fisked away by a small group of people for accumalating wealth. If come to the rural area it is the prasar bharati which give information and educates the rural india and not your nimbus, who hardly spends anything in rural sector. For this prasar bharti requires money, only from this type of events it can earn money. thank you

I totally agree with Kaushik. Just because PrasarBharati is "educating" the rural India, it does not have the right to demand feed from Neo sports. Mr George, I do not understand why people like you are trying to paint major corporates as "those rich group" of people. I dont see any fault in corporates trying to make money as it would only lead to casacading effect to the poor. Quite simply, Neo has paid a fortune for the rights and DD has no right to "steal" it. This is not the age of Robinhood (looting the rich and feeding the poor).

This like a thief snatching money and valuables and gifting them to his near and dear. The government is not justified. In British folk tales, there was a Robin Hood who used to snatch money and valuables from the rich and them to the poor. Here the receiving party is not poor. Their intention is to earn crores of rupees through Advertisements. If the government has good intentions, they should have ordered the DD to share the advertisement revenue with Nimbus on a 50%-50% basis.

How can you claim that. What mayur reflected is correct. After willing to put that much money and winning the bid, Govt. owned Prasar bharati, is waiting like a Fox, to pound upon them. They dont have guts to participate in the bid. Aren't they ashamed in asking such things. Already they have axed AXN claming it to be telecasting Live sexy programs. What about other FTV and all. These Govt organisations will never allow anything to grow.

I wholeheartedly agree. Nimbus have paid a lot of money for the rights. They gave prasar bharti a very reasonable option of having so-called 'dirty feed' which they didn't have to and which Prasar Bharti had no reason to refuse. Except that Prasar Bharti wants something for nothing. On another point, in my area we were unable to get any kind of coverage of the first match. Presumably its because our local cable operator was unwilling to pay Nimbus for screening the match. As a fee paying public we are entitled to be shown the matches. The cable operator should not be able to make such a decision arbitarily. They have a monopoly in the area and we are bound by their decision. The government should be more concerned with such situations as the cable operators make plenty of money and the service is much to be desired.

hope all of us watch NGC/Animal Planet channels. There we can see leopards/lions catches their prey after so much difficulties. They have to wait for long hours, perhaps days, to get a prey, and after long difficult chase, they somehow catches it. All of then suddenly, hyena comes and takes away the carcass. In our DD-Nimbus case, DD plays the role of hyena. Will not do anything, simply takes away the prey.

prasar bharati is well known for these kind of tricks. For the past couple of years, they have repeatedly been doing the same thing. In the first place, they don't bid for the telecast rights, then they threaten the broadcaster into sharing the "Live Feed". The court should have only allowed DD to broadcast the "dirty feed".
