My Dear Friend, All that the Australian medical centre had done was to study the action of Shoaib 'Chucker' Akhtar for a certain period in controlled conditions. What makes you think that just because he has been cleared at that time gives him a clean chit? You must be a pro-Pakistani and that is why you do not want to spell out your name other than 'me'! Mr. Me, you are talking through your hat! You know nothing about cricket!

Bedi sucks
by Me on Feb 11, 2006 10:39 AM

In my opinion, after facing humilitating defeats in last test and first one-day match from Pakistan and earlier defeating India in India, Bedi has gone nuts and lost his professional and unbiased approach towards cricket. Shoaib has been cleared by not any indian/pakistani institute BUT by a reputable Australian medical center. If Bedi still has a problem then I may suggest for him to perform a brain scan for himself at Shaukat Khanum Memorial free of charge.

chucking

Bedi is not only correct in his view, he has done the right thing to call Shoaib "chucker". Because, even before this Ind-Pak series started, one after another ex-pakistani players using the media to make degrading and discouraging comments on Indian players and team. From Parvez to Moin khan, Miandad, they are very good in using media to their advantage. Like the latest controversy about Inzy's out in last OD. All the pakistani players know very well that they are the type who wants to win 'hook or crook', but Moin is pointing finger to Dravid. And not only that, he also brought Sourav's name to make it more spicy to make the already existing uneasy atmosphere worse. So, Bedi, Chuhan and Gavaskar done the correct thing to put some pressure on the Pak side also. Of course these Shaoib and Murali are talented players. Me and You can not become one of them by just chucking. But they chucks, that is also true.

Bishen Bedi on chuckers
by TKS on Feb 10, 2006 11:36 PM

A batsman can bat any which way he may desire - orthodox or completely unorthodox, so long as he is in his crease and uses a standard bat. Fair enough. So why not let the bowler bowl any which way he may desire - orthodox or completely unorthodox, so long as he bowls from his crease and uses a standard ball? Chuck or throw, let any and all ways to bowl be legalised. Best way to end all arguments, hog-washing, and hair-splitting over what is legal and what is illegal.

Next, some rules are essential, but too many rules take the fun out of any game. A sport stops being a sport but becomes a contrived, stage-managed circus. American football is a prime example of the silliest game in the world because of its endless rules and stoppages due to infractions. Australian football, on the other hand, is endless fun to watch because of its raw nature and endless action - with some basic rules, of course. So cut the crap about telling a bowler how to bowl. Let him be a wild animal. Thow it under arm, chuck it like a baseball .. for all you care.

With all due respect to Bishen Bedi, whom I admired as a kid.

Chuck out the javelin throwers
by jayanta sengupta on Feb 10, 2006 11:35 PM

Lot of words are used when bowlers from the sub continent have suspect action, but no one says anything about Bret lee. His action is also suspect.he claims this is due to some deformity but as Mr. bedi says its hog wash. Mr. bedi hasnt used any words about mr. lee.Coming to the batting of the Indians Mr. Sehewag is posing a real problem to Rahul. He fails in 8 out of 10 innings and scores a quick 30 or 50 to stick along with the team. his batting should also be under scanner. he too cannot be carried any longer.he has been suspect on bouncy wickets and good pace attack. Example Karachi test.Should anyone question this?

I don't think Bedi understand the chucking rule
by Ray on Feb 10, 2006 11:31 PM

I don't think that Mr. Bedi really understands the problem. He keeps on commenting that Murali bowls the leg break without bending his arm, so why does he bend it while bowling the off breaks?

Well, I will try to explain. He DOES NOT bend it while bowling the off breaks. I repeat, he does not bend it while bowling the off breaks. It only looks like he is bending it. That is why it is called visual illusion. That illusion itself is caused by unusual positioning of his elbow. While bowling, it seems like he is bending his arm when he is actually not. It may be hard to believe, but this fact has been proven beyond any doubt by modern scietific tests. I think we can leave the guy alone and give him his due. His action is within the 15 degree law at all times.

Well said Mr. Bedi
by samrat on Feb 10, 2006 11:28 PM

Being one of the better critics of cricket involving India, Mr. Bedi has rightly justified the flaws of the present Indian Team and its performances in the recent past.
India Pak Series is one of its kind and everything involved is spectacular in itself.(including the dismissal of Inzamam). sometime it is these which makes us ponder over the whole game. probably, we wouldnt have been much aware about it, history pointin to just 2 other victims of the Inzi kind.
Indian seamers are yet to show any killer punch in their attack. they have just become shadows to the pakistani counterparts. India has experimented in the last 3 series and the think tank should focus on winning to build confidence for the world cup the next year rather than bringing Sandy Gordon before the world cup.
its time the players pull their socks and play a defined role in the team.

Bedi's Comment
by Vivek on Feb 10, 2006 09:07 PM  | Hide replies

I feel Mr. Bedi should write some articles regarding efforts cultivating a genuine spinner in the indian team must be a top priority. Honestly everybody talks about it but do we really have anybody to share the load when Kumble retires. There is virtually no Plan or the future . Harbhajan gets injured and we call in Powar who is like a part time bowler in the Mumbai Ranji team. Why More or Jagdale from the BCCI Selection team are not looking for any answers to make the the spin less Indian team equipped.

dear mr Bedi iam a huge fan of Ajay Jadeja i met him at wankhede on 1st jan 2005 when he was playing ranji against mumbai he smashed the ball out of stadium to the ball of romesh powar,he has still lot of cricket left in him,i would request BCCI to please consider jadeja for next world cup pls give him one chance to clean his name.as other country like S.A. had given chance to Harshall Gibbs. i would be the happiest person in the world when jadeja make his come back in the indian team.the present situation will change after jadeja's inclusion. BCCI PLS BRING BACK JADEJA..........

Why not Ajay Jadeja???
by Sameer on Feb 10, 2006 06:20 PM

Why cannot Ajay Jadeja's name not be considered for a place in the Indian team. This may seem out of context to the article by Mr.Bedi, but i was waiting for a forum to raise this. Maybe rediff should consider an opinion poll for selecting Jadeja. He has had a phenomenal season in Ranji and he has a fantastic ODI track record and also a brilliant fielder. The best part is he does not fail under pressure, he still has a few years left in him and he will be ideal choice for our World Cup team. Coming to bowlers we need Kumble back. Ajay Jadeja and Kumble will make our team into a formidable ODI unit. I leave it to our viewers to give their feedback and comments.

Mr.Bedi is not motivating
by Arun Ranganath on Feb 10, 2006 05:48 PM  | Hide replies

I am afraid that this article by Mr.Bedi is in extreme sour taste. For a seasoned professional like him,to have come out with such a castigating article, speaks volumes about ridiculous criticism.

The Indian cricket team needs motivation and inspiration. Not somebody to be picking holes in its current performance. It would be good if Mr.Bedi can keep quiet,if he is unable to say anything positive. As for his comments on Mr.Sunil Gavaskar, lesser said the better. The ICC Technical Committee has a job to do and works by some standard rules, which I think Mr.Bedi would do well not to interfere with.

Regards,
Arun Ranganath

Listen pal..i dont think you got the point..when Mr.bedi is pointing out something negative..he is only doing that to spur the boys along to prove him wrong and perform..a few days ago....i was severely critical towards sachin.... does this mean that i don't like sachin or i have forgotten what he has done for this country in the past...no....when journalists or ex-cricketers speak out(or write articles)like this, the ones who genuinely love this country want the current lot to read what they have to say and right the wrongs.....so in a different kind of way what Mr.bedi said was positive....and for gods sake is it just me who thinks that shoaib chucks ...the whole world knows it..i think there is a problem with the paki's system ..a lot of their bowlers chuck...they have to correct it at the root levels or it may pose a serious problem for them later on...and about murali..even i fould it strange that he delivers a legbreak with a perfect action..i dont know why the offie comes out bad then..i think he is kind of contradicting himself by bowling that leg break with a perfectly leagal action..anyway..i hope murali he has an explaination..shoaib(chucky) on the other hand no chance.

mr. ranganathan, i admit that, Bedi, is usually very harsh and critical about our players. He is pessimistic too, as far as Indian cricket is concerned. But in this case, "javelin throwers", he is spot on. His views are correct, and u r going to c more and more people joining the chours about Akthar's chucking.

Mr Ranganathan,
we Indians like no self criticism. What Mr Bedi has said is correct, candid, honest and forthright. But Indian's lack the gastroenteritis system to digest the truth and plain talking. If you play for Team India, you should not be ruffled by what anyone says. At that level you ought to be self motivated.Criticism should spur you to newer heights and generate greater self determination to excell. If this article demotivates the Indian Team then let all the softies go home and play gali cricket.
To survive and excell in todays cricketing world you need bones of steel, a doule barrel heart and a stomach that can digest stones.
Mr Ranga hope you dont get demotivated by this.

I agree with you and also his comments about SL vs SA match needs to be highly condemned. Now I have to believe in the saying that "your brain gets useless when your age is high". Common they batted well and the pitch is so flat..It is not fault of Team India...Pessimists like this should keep quiet and shut up!!
