Harbhajan's bowling action
by Yogesh Hasabnis on Mar 31, 2005 07:39 PM

To be honest, HarbhajanSingh's action is suspect, not only while bowling the wrong one but also when he bowls the normal off-spin. Rules should be the same for everybody and any particular individual should not be given unfair advantage.

Bowling Action Vs Eye-Sight
by Amit Goel on Mar 23, 2005 06:59 PM

I think Chris Broad, instead of checking the bowling action of Harbhajan Singh, should request for checking of eye-sight of Steve Bucknor, who can not see the widest possible gap between bat and ball. ICC needs to bring out rules for checking the performance of Umpires. Those who consistently give incorrect decisions should get the axe.

Flawed logic in Broad's assesment
by Solar Cat on Mar 22, 2005 08:23 PM

I find it amusing that they are calling him for only the doosra. If his action was noticeably different, then how is it that the match referee & umpire can pick it, but the batsman who is trained to pick up different deliveries, and is concentrating 100% on the bowlers arm cannot pick it up and is flummoxed? If his action was flawed for just that one delivery, then it should be to his disadvantage because it would make the delivery easy to read. The fact that it is a potent delivery implies that it is bowled with the same action, or that any difference is undetectable to the naked eye .

Its not black&white
by Anurag on Mar 22, 2005 07:38 PM  | Hide replies

Well, this article is quite ridiculous. A doosra can be bowlded with or without chuking. Just like Brett Lee can 'chuck' a bouncer and not 'chuck' it at will :-) So if Broad feels that in the second innings, Harbhajan was putting an 'extra' effort in his doosra, he is well within his rights to report him.

The interesting fact to determine is weather there was a significant change in Harbhajan's action while bowling the doosra in the second innings. The writer of this article never bothered to explore this obvious angle, and just went on to insinuate prejudice. Not professional at all.

BHAJJIS ACTION
by srivathsan on Mar 22, 2005 02:36 PM

The icc in all its fairness should not only dismiss the report but also the referee. It is high time they concentrate on referees &umpires who are totally biased like steve buckner.A penalty clause should be there for umpires & referees for the mistake committed by them .Are they not penelising players & captains for excessive appealing, sledging & slow over rate ? If bhajji passes the biochmetric test then the entire fees of umpires & referee should be levied as penalty. The batsmen should have the right to call for third umpire if he feels that he is not out. This will help the game & the cricket as such.Umpires arealso humans & commit mistakes i agree. But look at buckner . A caught behind is given without being appealed by wicket keeper & closein fielder . No other umpire has done this. The last day inzy was plumblb for balaji.THREE consecutive balls &two would have definetely hit the stumps, the third might have.simply apologising does not solve the problem.I recommend to ICC to delist the old man. When icc force a one of the finest umpire venkat to resign why not a mediocre umpire like buckner & referee like broad?

suspect action? take action.
by Praveen on Mar 22, 2005 05:43 AM

a very interesting article indeed. but the fact that a player was cleared does not necessarily imply that he will not be chucking in the very next game. and if the authorities think the action of the bowler is suspect, they can and should report it.
what we can do is a make small change in the rules. we can have a panel of experts view footage of every bowler after a match to assertain their action. if they are in doubt then they can report the bowler for biomechanical analysis. like the author has mentioned,15 degrees can not be verified by the naked eye. hence such an analysis would save the umpires, the bowlers and also the ICC from embarassment.we can also nab culprits who escape the eye of the umpires or the match refree.
Regards,
Praveen

ICC's a blabbering bastard
by Rishi on Mar 22, 2005 12:42 AM

That's true. They want to stay in business. So they 'create' issues in order to have 'something to do'. In effect, they end up making fool of themselves and prove again n again to the world that they are nothing but just a bunch of blabbering bastards!

You are ridiculous
by nandu on Mar 21, 2005 08:21 PM

I suppose you never use the word "I think" because you know (you don't think right) that you know.

Maybe its because we (rather you) are upset because its Bhajji in concern. But there's no doubt that the Akhtars, Bhajjis and Muralitharans are chucking and have an illegal advantage. To bring biomechanics into it absolute stupidity unless you want to bring technology into the game and do away with umpires. To the naked eye Bhajji chucks, but you can never see Kumble or Warne do that.

Purpose of Match refree - is it limited only to players
by B Raju on Mar 21, 2005 04:56 PM

It is surprising that the match refrees seem to act on reports of bowling action or excessive appealing. If any person can detect Harbhajan's action flaw while bowling the doosra , then he must be gifted with extraordinary vision. Pity that inspite of having such extraordinary vision , the present match refree failed to make a consistent career as a opening batsman for England. It is also surprising that Mr Steve Bucknor goes unnoticed by any match refree. It is a shame that such an unimpressive umpire has officiated in 100 tests. Is the match refree's role limited to observing only the players and curbing the natural sportive instincts of a fast bowler to appeal? The match refree's role should be to see that not only the players maintain the spirit of the game but also that the umpires show fairplay while handing out any decision(s).
