Well Dravid is an outstanding and technically sound batsman. If we leave aside the allegations like he plays slowly in ODIs he is a backbone of Indian cricket team. Even in ODIs he plays a very crucial role. When he comes to bat at one down, there will be tremendous pressure on batsmen. There will be a need to build the partnerships and i think is the right player and he is not second to anybody.
Both Yash and Ahsutosh have got it wrong. The statistics given in the last table is for the players after each of them have played 88 tests.Sachin scored 242 much later. And for the first table it says player records versus(Vs) and not FOR. Readers would do well to double check before jumping in with errata and addenda.
The last table showed the records after the first 88 test matches of each individual.Lara scored his 400 after his 88th test match.Similarly with Sachin.so the stat are correct
I think their (sachin's and Lara's) highests after 88 tests were 217 and 242. Although they have amassed higher scores (242 and 400) after the first 88 tests they played.
It is a shame, that people writing articles on statistics cannot double check what they write. Atleast on opinion pieces or general reports this is admissible, but it smacks of unprofessionalism when done in an article that lists stat tables.
Kudos to Rahul Dravid who has always been an unsung hero!
However, an interesting fact is that Dravid played 149 innings in 88 Tests to score 7658 runs while Tendulkar played only 142 innings to score 7329 runs. The difference is only 329 runs. In seven innings, it is reasonable to expect Tendulkar to have scored 329 runs or even more had he got to play those 7 innings in his 88 Tests.
This shows that staatistics show only part of the picture.
Of course, this does not take anything away from Dravid who deserves his share of glory!
