still in doubt?
by sunita on Apr 20, 2005 10:42 PM  | Hide replies

even after people like healy, ian chappel, greg cappel termed sehwag as one of the promising talents emerged, some still doubt his ability. they say he can play well only on placid tracks. he scored century at blumfonten,SA-placid?, trendbridge, england-placid?, melbourne, australia-placid? they say he can'tplay against good bowlers. 309 against pak with akhthar and sami, 195 against aus with lee gillespie, 155 against aus with mcgrath and co- are they not good bowlers?
come on, have some sense!

Inconsistancy
by Montoo on Apr 20, 2005 07:30 PM

Indian team need consistancy from past 5 yrs . The new coach and captain should try to groom the talent we have. Otherwise we will find our team very close at the bottom of the table.

well said woolmer

this is the sad plight of some players in india. they never get accolades from the so called experts of cricket in india. because there is so much of provincial considerations. luckily they get them from those outside india.
same is the case with sehwag. healy says he is right handed lara, woolmer says he is close to modern day genius; but our commentators are busy comparing him with afridi, who is note more than a blind hitter! simply because he does not belong to mumbai!
it is sad that people like manjrekar, so obsessed with sachin are not able to recognise talents like sehwag.
and i don't think they will ever realise!

Sehwag and Bradman

Dear Mr Woolmer,

Please do not pretend to know more than the man himself, The Don. He had seen Vivian, Barry and Greame. He still felt that Sachin bats like him. Yes, he is not the same Sachin right now, but that does not take away anything from Sachin the legend.

However, if you claim to know more that the Don, then say so if you can.

Cheers

He is only a calculated slogger
by Mudassir on Apr 19, 2005 10:21 PM

Sehwag is only doing well on placid tracks of the subcontinent. He has only done occasionally well on pitches where there is even the slightest to offer to the bowlers. He is by all means only a calculated or sophisticated slogger.

Analysis: Out of all 7 ODI hundreds scored - 5 are in the subcontinent and 2 in Nzl. All against WI, SL, Nzl and 1 against a weakish Pak attack. None against quality attacks.

The stats are not too different in tests apart from the occasional one or two good innings against top bowling attacks.

He is in the same ranks as Symonds, Afridi and Dhoni.

Regards

Woolmer is given to talking through his hat. It sounds more like a bad joke, you know. Sehwag, no doubt, is a good player and worth watching. But, he needs loads of luck to do well. Unless he gets two three or lives in every innings, he can not score a century. A good look at his recent career seems to confirm this. Whenever, a catch offered by him has been taken first up, he has not made a big score.

Great players make chanceless centuries. Forget the great Bradman, he is not even a Tendulkar or for that matter, a Dravid.

Its useless to give this respect for any Indian player..
by Manish Sharma on Apr 19, 2005 09:16 PM

I think we should stop making such comments about any "currently playing" Indian cricketers except Dravid. Sachin was definitely the one who got this remark from legend and he definitely deserved it, but in currect scenario, to me and I believe, to every Indian, Indian team will look as pathetic as a non-test playing nation (if not that, then it will be just above that).

True team and team players probably exists only in Australia and Pakistan. Pakistan played damn well and I've no words to praise them. All of their team memebers showed incredible consistency and team spirit that parobably no team can match. Kudos to Inzy and his team.

Last but not the least : I request our team members, captain, coach and board members to stop making havoc of Indian batting line up and considering them as world's best. They first need to develop consistency in their batting line up before they could speak before public. They should share their comments internally only (to have high spirits ;-).

Once again, hats off to Inzy and his team :).

Cheers,
Manish
