1)Tendulkar has not flourished under Ganguly:-
In your article, you keep referencing "in the last few years". This is so true. I read an article before the recent Holland cup titled "Tendulkar asked to pace his innings". The rationale given by ganguly was 'Tendulkar needs to bat 50 overs'. Hell, why cant Ganguly bat 50 overs ? Makes you wonder if the team management is responsible for this descendency.
2)Return to Form :-
Every time, that the so called 'out-of-form' phrase reaches his mind, he toils hard and gets back on track. The Sydney innings is a perfect example of that. He did not play the cover drive becuase his mind told him that he was getting out too many times with that shot. This is perfectly acceptable.
3)Tendulkar IS (not WAS) the Team :-
Not only do we need 'Sachin-the batsman', we really do need 'Sachin-the devastating spinner'. It is because of his crucial wickets that we win matches (Calcutta,Adeleide,Pakistan).
4)The Sachin advantage :-
When he is in the team, the opponents spend lot of time & energy in planning for him. This takes away the focus on other players (Multan test). Even a team like Aus would be doubtful abodeclaring in the 3rd innings.

Its not just maturity
by Anurag Dhanotia on Sep 24, 2004 11:52 PM

I am from the software industry and might take that as an example here but this would probably fit everywhere else too.
I haven't seen many of the Technical Managers(normally people with 10+ years of experience in the same area) doing coding work or being excited about a new design change or a new language. They would have been great brains during their time of joining the industry but as time has past by, the nature of job, its repititiveness has made them jump their roles and attempt something different. Fortunately enough, they have been lucky that they got a better role, a different ball game to play with and try out new things.
Unfortunately, Cricket (or for that matter any other game and its genius - Dhanraj Pillay to take an example in Hockey) does not offer too many such options when it comes to performing on the groud. Its the same batting, same bowling and same fielding. Especially with a person like Tendulkar or Dhanraj who have been putting not just their skills but a major part of their brain into the game, I can understand why they are changing their game as the time has passed by and feel it is one of the most natural thing to happen to both of them.

Tendulkar is of old
by Chinmay Trivedi on Sep 24, 2004 11:51 PM

What about 2003 world cup? I guess you were definately sleeping during that time otherwise you will not say that tendukar is not of old. When pakistan made 250+ runs because our great bowler zaheer khan got out of form saeed anwar back to full form because of his splendid bowling !
It was him who single handedly played his fierce some shots agains waqar, akram and akhtar. We reached to final of world cup because he played outstanding against each country and still we blame him because he did not played in final. He has always played when it was required for him to play fast.
Now currently, when tendulkar skip 2 series, we saw indian team performance, how do you expect person like tendulkar to play those kind of shots when it is necessary for him to stay on pitch for longer.
If he plays all the shots, he may get out cheaply, then you will write, he doesn't stay up to end of game.
There is no problem with tendulkar, problem is with media writers who critique him unnecessarily. You write (this sarcastic aritcal) for your own publicity. Please, let tendulkar decide how he wants play. He knows better about his game as he is a cricket genius with a gift, not you and me. Thank you.

I don't agree with this..
by Siddharth Surana on Sep 24, 2004 11:49 PM

I don't agree with this
he is a man not machine. do u think he is enjoying the way things turning up?
mebbe sm wrong habits of playing sm shots or a
flaw in his approach towards the game but that is pretty normal for any
professional and not at all deliberate. i feel the genius he is,
he'll soon sort things out. 'n why all the time we compare him with richards or
bradmans or gavaskars of the world. agreed these all were legends in their
rights but one human being can't b a combination of all of them. why not
respect him for being tendulkar itself?
why not relish his crisp straight drives rather crib that he can't hit out
lofted shots as ganguly does.? why not admire his sheer cricketing acumen
rather searching a sehwag like self destructive instincts?

Tendulkar of Old
by venkatesh Muthukrishnan on Sep 24, 2004 11:49 PM

I could not agree more with the author's assessment. He has rightly pointed out that tendulkar was very aggressive when he was virtually carrying the team single-handed,but has become more circumspect now when he has very illustrious colleagues. It is time tendulkar take stock of the situation and return to old times.

Certainly !
by Ash on Sep 24, 2004 11:41 PM

Certainly Mr.Sriram...you are right !!
But that holds true not forever, for true talents can never be supressed even its the possessor who wants them to be supressed !!
Maybe the Australian tour of India will be the turning point !!
Lets pray & hope so..

God to human
by tim john on Sep 24, 2004 11:39 PM

ya ur absolutly right that Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar has changed him self from God to ordinary mortal..He still scores more than what he used to do 4 years back but the number of matches that tendulkar wins for India can be nubered thse days.he cutoff some shots because of back problem but i dont want him to cut further many offside shots because of tennis elbow. But frankly speaking todays there many players who play far better cricket than Tendulkar and win matches for their country. If Warne reduces his devilish leg break because of shoulder injury or murali reduces his off break because of shoulder problem we dont see them picking wickets.Tendulkar's strength is God's gift and he cant throw that just like that.If sad to see Tendulkar struggle to score fastly against ordinary bowlers. The result was immediatly seen as he changed his game against PAK in world cup match the result India won.......

That article was simply wonderful. Tendulkar does not seem to have the same dominance he had say 4-5 yrs ago. The title of the article sums it all up "Wanted: Tendulkar of old". Super article
