good decision by rahul
by rakshith on Mar 30, 2004 04:42 PM

Hi I think it was good decision to declare by rahul.Even here in sydney in the last test saurav got it all wrong by delaying declaration and playing on and ended up drawing instead of winning.
It takes guts to make such decisions and rahul is a man of steel

personal milestones do not matter?
by Pratap on Mar 30, 2004 12:19 AM

I thought the thinktank exhibited foolish bravado in leaving Sachin stranded. While one should not be too obsessed with personal milestones, it is also true that the confidence that a player gains from hitting a double ton is not insignificant..which in turn will have a positive effect on the team. One can understand if the declaration came when Sachin was at 180, but declaring at 194????? I can't understand this kind of thinking.

'' New Maturity or Old/Dirty Politics ''?
by q on Mar 29, 2004 11:56 PM

Mr. Ashish,

I am referring the following lines of your article.

>> Many will argue whether it would have made a
>> difference to the teams plans had Tendulkar been >> allowed to reach his double century. But it is a >> sign of new maturity among the players. Personal >> milestones simply don't matter

You must be kidding when u referred to the untimely declaration as "New Maturity". My opinion is that this declaration is a result of continued friction among two senior players. It is unfortuante that a gentleman like Dravid has unwantedly become a part of this fiasco.

I just spoke with my friends in India and they said that Tendulkar clearly expressed his disappointment in the press meet, shortly after the end of day two.

In all probability, Tendulkar would have gotten the remaining 6 runs in 2 to 3 overs, and it would have left India with another 12 to 13 overs at the end of the day, as opposed to the 16 overs they actually got, which is Still ok.

If this act is really a "matured one", why didn't the declaration come at 500 or so odd runs when Sehwag is yet to complete his tripple century ?? Even 500 is a competing total. Please Explain.

Thanks,
Q

Unfair on Sachin
by Bruno on Mar 29, 2004 10:55 PM  | Hide replies

What prompted Rahul Dravid to declare the innings ? Were we in the last session of Day 4. If they cannot get the team out in 275 overs, how can they get Pakistan out in 276 overs.....

After all he could have told to Sachin that he has one over more and declared after that............

Is there a history when a team has decalred with a batsman on 194 on DAY 2................. I can understand the declaration on Day 5.......... but on day two, that with 16 overs left.......... This is hard to fathom.........

This shows one thing............. Rahul Dravid DOES NOT LIKE SACHIN GET A DOUBLE HUNDRED TO EQUAL HIS RECORD

Rahul Dravid is a great batsman who has scored 4 double centuries. He plays for the team and not for his individual score. Tendulkar on the other hand only bothers about his individual milestones. Tendulkar unlike Dravid is more bothered about breaking records set by great men rather than a victory of the team. It was a good decision by Dravid to declare. Surely such a great batsman as Dravid deserved to have his record unequalled by lesser batmen like Tendulkar.

would another 10 minutes have made a difference?
by shyam62 on Mar 29, 2004 10:31 PM

was sachin takne into confidednce b4 declaring? i think not. it is sad. by the way is the no. of hundereds by all the team members some kind of a record? Sachin has 34+.Dravid+ saurav+...also i think it is a record that for a country that has played 73 yrs of test critcek, the top 3 run getters are in the current team!!

Great but unfair
by Rohit P on Mar 29, 2004 10:14 PM  | Hide replies

Splendid performance but not a professional one. Professional does not mean showing total disregard to the hardwork of team members. So what if India already had a huge total. I, for one, would have liked Sachin to complete a double century. He was only 6 runs short of it and was in good form! How much time would it have taken for him to get to 200? He should at least have been rewarded the pleasure of a double ton for the sheer grit and support he had provided to Sehwag in the two days. I respect Dravid for his solidarity and discipline. But for once, I think the declaration was a hasty and was just a show of authority by the acting captain.

Early Declaration in the I test at Multan
by N.Krishnakumar on Mar 29, 2004 10:07 PM

Dear Sir. It is true that personal milestones are secondary to the ultimate team cause - a victory. But I wonder that had the decision on declaration been delayed by 2-3 overs, would it have affected the end result of the current test? Such a decision would have helped to script an extra-ordinary team innings which contains one tripple century and one double century. I think the decision was an injustice to Sachin. But, without any argument, I salute sehwag for his monumental feat.
Thanking you. N. Krishnakumar
