New no-ball rule
by Muralee on Jul 20, 2004 01:07 AM

I read somewhere that the new noball rule will be followed in the asia cup'04. By this rule, the batsman gets a freeball after a noball, to which he can play any shot and doesnt get out.

As usual, I observed that Sachin got out just after a noball. Technically he should not be out, right?(as it is a free-ball)

Inept Patel, Selfish Ganguly and Liar Zaheer
by Rahul on Jul 19, 2004 09:14 PM

We got to see three important things in India-SL match
1. Patel is inept in One dayers. His scrathy and unconvincing innings opening the batting for India proves this point.

2. Ganguly's selfishness. Right from beginning of Asia cup there were speculations as to whom would open the innings for India. Now, that Ganguly had a chance to open the innings with Sachin, Ganguly refused to open the innings and sent inexperienced Patel to open the innings knowing that 282 was a huge total to achieve. Ganguly knows he is out of form and retorted to selfishness by sending Patel as opener.

3. Liar Zaheer. This is the third time that Zaheer has pulled out because of injury in first match of series while declaring himself 100% fit at start of the series.

Of the other things I think Sachin has already past his prime now. He only wants to achieve records in Test matches now. Consistency and Sachin do not hand-in-hand now. Balaji too needs to be more consistent. I think he gets disheartened if he doesn't get a wicket in his first 2-3 overs and goes for lot of runs in subsequent overs. Laxman's injury also is sort of a puzzle. Was he really injured?

Dravid and Pathan look solid though.

Ganguly's basic errors
by Dr Bennet Anchan on Jul 19, 2004 07:40 PM

That India managed to make a match of it despite losing 4 quick wickets is another testimony to the classy skills & wonderful temperament of Rahul Dravid.India lost the match more due to Ganguly's gross error in judgement more than rustiness or anything else.Firstly,he SHOULD have pulled out Zaheer when it became obvious after a couple of overs that he was not fully fit.He then continued with his inconsistent policy regarding the 6th bowler,& instead of asking Tendulkar to bowl, brought on himself & then Yuvraj-wonder whether he imagined that he was still playing the UAE!!!And when India came out to bat,the biggest shocker of them all-little Parthiv walking out with Sachin. No cricket lover would have understood the rationale behind the move, especially since Parthiv did not go for the big shots,& just rotated the strike, something Sehwag & Ganguly could hav done just as well,if not better. In the end,Sachin fell trying to force the pace,& the captain himself has been so woefully out of touch in recent times that it puts a lot of pressure on the batsmen to follow. To their credit,Dravid & Yuvraj battled hard,& nearly pulled off a famous win for India.Long way to go for India just yet.

Opening Combination
by Rajasekhar on Jul 19, 2004 04:24 PM

Ganguly's idea of opening Parthiv along with Sachin makes one laugh, what's the theme behind it?
Sehwag is made for quick runs and destroying the opposition's bowling attack.
He anyhow showed the Lankans how danger he is once he steps in, but the bad luck once again favoured him.
But, the match at last was lost when Dravid's wicket fell, a handsome effort from him.
The Indians always praise and fill the papers with the photographs of Sachin even if he goes for a duck, that's not fair, Dravid never got the praise he deserves, infact, Dravid is much more sound technical than Sachin

hats off to the mid and down order batsmen who have shown that indian team is now a changed one. rarely we see such kind of courage in indian batsmen even when they know that the target is hard to reach. they put a descent fight and kept the match alive still the last over. take the positive side of the game "indian team is now a die hard one". cheers to the indian team

Old habits die hard
by Sandipan on Jul 19, 2004 03:43 PM

Losing to a team that, on-paper doesnt even come close to the current Indian team shows that we are back to where we were, the most inconsistent team of all.Saurav n his boys keep proving it to themselves n to the nation that on a given day, they can loose to any given opposition, n the best part being that the opposition doesnt have to do much about it. They just need to sit n watch the Indians dig their own grave. Starting from the team selection to sending Patil out to open, how more courteous could the team have been to the hosts. Luckily we have another chance to mend our wrongs, so let us hope the jesting is done away with n we get down to serious cricket

Ramanathan
Dravid as keeper
by Ramanathan on Jul 19, 2004 03:22 PM

This match underlines the fact that Dravid has to keep wickets. Parthiv can neither play at the top nor at the middle. Parthiv is certainly a very good keeper but he has to develop the ability for big hitting and/or rotating the strike if he has to replace Dravid as keeper. Sourav's tactic to put Dravid as keeper is one of his best moves and certainly it has made Dravid a better batsmen which is contrary to what many people think (this infact, has been admitted by Dravid himself). I am not able to understand y there are calls to replace Dravid as keeper. Atleast right now such a move is uncalled for. May be down the line, yes.

why india lost the match
by lrshad alam on Jul 19, 2004 02:59 PM

i dont understad why sahwag is not open the inning.he can destroy the any type of attack,281 in srilanka is good total,i think he must open the inning.sachin needs some partner like sahwag, who loves the chase, otherwise there is huge pressure on sachin, and thats why sachins early dismisal.
ganguly shud be come after dravid, currently dravid is the most faithful batsman in the world, why he shud came after ganguly,
