indian team selection
by subramanian P on Jul 08, 2004 04:34 AM

As said by captain, the team retained its old soldiers as their services are reqd for the country till they reach 60 yrs. As regards selection is concerned, performance or non-performance is immaterial as the selected team of oldies should be sumptuously paid only for their past performance. Even if all fail to make an impression, their coffer will be filled by the Board as the chest is overflowing. As long Mr Dalmia is at the helm of affairs, well boys no problem to you. Dont bother about winning. Goodluck plan for your future from now on. Every indian is proud of cricketers becoming members of any sabhas after retrement. So even after your cricketing career is over, you still stand a chance to make money. I wish why every indian shouldnot become a national cricket player so that there will be no poverty in the country oneday.
Afterall cricket is not a dying game and men may & go to take care of your needs.

Build bench strength
by Muralidhar Rao on Jul 08, 2004 03:54 AM  | Hide replies

India should be trying out new players in the India A team. It does not matter if the A team loses matches. The purpose of the A team is to build bench strength for team India. So it does not make sense to include chokers like Badani, Bahutule and Sriram. These players have been tried many times over and have proved by their performances that they are not of international calibre. They are very good domestic players but every time they play for India in International matches they fail because of mental immaturity. They just choke because they are scared of the pressure or on account of sledging. How many more matches do they need to play for the A team to raise themselves to International standard? This would have been a good chance to try 5 more juniors besides Dinesh Kartik. Even selecting older players like Gavaskar and Bhandari who would walk into the senior team does not make sense.

Sometimes, people gain mental maturity after some failures. And with some age. So, this is not sufficient reason to dump the players permanently.
See eg: like Rahul Dravid & Attapattu.

Asia Cup

I think Ajit Agarkar should have found the place in the Indian squad as he is the very rare Indian bowler who can bowl outswingers so efficiently. I don't find any reason why Parthiv is in the squad as anyway he is going to be a mere spectator in any critical matches. I fear the selectors are simply getting carried away by the big names and their experience.

Selection of the Indian Team
by Nakul Kadaba on Jul 07, 2004 09:29 PM

this team is good enough for the world cup, not just the Asia Cup; maybe bringing in Badani and dropping one left arm fast bowler would be better, to balance out the batting order. but this team is good. Harbu and Kumble as spinners, 3 left arm seamers, 1 right arm seamer, and the great Indian batting line-up.

Rahul
As expected
by Rahul on Jul 07, 2004 08:19 PM

The selectors have opted to select Parthiv Patel in the squad and that is because he is almost certain to play one match against UAE which is the third side in Pool B which comprises of India and SL as the other two teams.

Dravid will hence get a well deserved break in between the matches from wicket-keeping and Parthiv will get a chance to impress the selectors with his batting skills.

Looks like this will be last chance for Parthiv Patel in ODI's if he fails and the Tamil Nadu WK-Batsman, Dinesh Kartik puts up a decent show while playing for India-A side.

why agarkar was omitted?
by srinivas on Jul 07, 2004 07:22 PM  | Hide replies

i cant understand how zaheer was included when agarkar was omitted. zaheer has been failing in both tests & oneday, particularly in ODIs zaheer's economy was over 7. but agarkar is a good ODI cricketer. he took 6w in ODI in australia & also in one test who was the main role in india's test victory against australia.

Having no god father & no boasting might be agarkar's bad luck.

I very much support your view. Zaheer Khan is retained in to the squad just because of his previous perfomances. Considering his current form, he should have been certainly dropped
