awesome!
by sankar on Dec 09, 2004 02:56 PM

This is really a great analysis that I came across in recent times...simply awesome stuff!
I completely agree with the views on Anil. He is one of our all time greats...period.
Sometimes I really feel sorry for the way he is treated by the selectors and team management like dropping him in the world cup finals and as recently as golden jubilee one-day match. I would say, if you really have to choose between Anil and Harbhajan, Anil should be picked. This is because he is a better bowler than Bhajji even today, especially in big matches.

Well Said

This is a wonderful analysis. I was surprised to see kumble coming out of the blue and becoming the highest wicket taker for India.
That was a good analysis. I liked the reasoning given for why he is not considered great.
May be we should re consider.

Excellent Statistical Analysis
by Manjeet on Dec 09, 2004 11:56 AM

Hi Sachin,

Excellent statistical analysis I should say. And I totally agree that Kumble is 'An ignored champion' and an 'unsung hero'.

The only thing I didn't like in the article was the comparision with the legend Kapil Dev...and no...I am not one of those die hard Kapil Dev fans. Kapil is a living legend and will always be and as is Anil.

But my friend cricket then and cricket now are altogether two different ball games. Well, if not altogether different I am sure you will agree that they are somewhat different. Players now play much
more cricket than people in Kapil and Gavaskar era.

Moreover, comparing two icons has never been a good idea. You just can't make one of them look anything less than an icon, period. And thats exactly what you did in your article my friend.

Hope you will keep that in mind next time you try to compare two icons. Its as if comaring the sun and the moon..which I think is impossible. Both have their own importance and should be praised
seperately.

Cheers,
Manjeet

This is a really worth-reading article
by rohan on Dec 09, 2004 10:36 AM

The person who has written this article has really done a wonderful job in trying to explain why Kumble shud b considered KING of bowling. He is really a great performer for the country and at 34 he has atleast 2yrs left in him.Ganguly is yet to realise the fact that Kumble gives everything on the field ,beitbwling batting[atleast to some extent] and fielding.Just remember the way he played in West Indies 2 and half yrs ago with his head bandaged so much, does one need a better example of DESH PREM !Its so irritating to see Kumble sit out of important games inspite of his wonderful performances but ofcourse sourav and his men have always suffered when they have dropped Kumble frm the side in any important game...a fact that almost none wud have noticed very much.Atleast now realise the importance of his presence in the team and include him in the squad....u seletion and skippers, dont b fools!

Both are legends
by Prakash Thombre on Dec 09, 2004 10:35 AM

I think Kapil was on a diffrent level alltogether and had much more to handle and focus on than just bowl.
Obviously if there are more responsibilities and the pressure it always becomes difficult to perform... And he simply did his best... But if u look at Kumble...apart from bowling there isnt much for him to do are there isnt much to expect from him...
He isnt a good at feald...he isnt good at batting.....But yes I believe as a bowler he is excellent and even if there isnt much contrubutions on other aspects...his bowling had always made a big diffrence....So what I feel is they both are some of the grestest cricketers India has ever produced

well a wonderful article...
worth a read esp for those who admire Kumble!
well mayb i also felt a bit taken aback by the bold comparison..
i wud blindly say Paaji is paaji even after this article , but i have been among the silent few to reckon Kumbles greatness...

Kumble has been the reticent modest guy who showed v less emotion even on the Kotla ground after a magical tenner!
he is not flamboyant , he is not aggressive , not gutsy..
wait wait..im gettin it wrong.......!!
aggressive?
i believe he has been the most aggressive spinner of recent times..
Gutsy...cant imagine many who would have taken a stride on the field with a near broken jaw , bandaged ...
or clasped the ball with 102 degrees body temp.
Maybe the average cricket goer fails to notice it.....
Cricket is so much like movies..

Tendulkar makes a Shah rukh khan..good or bad hes a demi god..he is the Junta's lil master..

Kumble comes across the classy one..
ask a Bhogle or a ravi shahstri ..they have more words to praise abt this spin doctor frm blore....

Im with u Kumble...so are many of us...!!

ignored champion

It was nice statistics, but dont forget Kapil was fast bowler and used bowl on Indian pitches custom made for spin. Though kapil took 131 tests to reach 434 but he bowled lesser overs than Kumble. I agree Kumble is champion but Kapil cant be compared.
