sachin's interview
by Pradip K Mazumder on Apr 22, 2004 01:37 AM

I do not agree with Sachin's statement that individuals do not win matches. If one looks at the captaincy record of Sunil Gavaskar, one can see that number of matches lost are less than won. Singlehandedly Sunny saved many matches for India and when supported by Vishi, India won matches. Chandrasekhar helped to win matches for India. Even you Sachin snatched wins for India on your won. However, it is undeniable that any sports in ultimate sense relies heavily on team work but individual excellence will continue to matter.

My Greatest phase /sachin is still sore
by padmanabhan on Apr 21, 2004 09:58 PM  | Hide replies

Whatever Sachin may talk about team decision/oneness or team spirit ,I feel still he is sore with Dravid,on the declaration while sachin was 194.While answering the second question he says he came very close to scoring two double hundreds in a row.In his post match nterview he said Indians were going 4 runs an over which is very good by test match atandards.the declaration hence came as a surprise. The Aussies in the same circumstances would have scored another 80 runs atleast.Perhaps sachin thought that nobody would dare to dreclare at that point.Well Dravid did it.Pl,ask Sachin to clarify.
If team spirit is talked he should not refer to the missed double hundred again.Padmanabhan

I think here you are making a big misinterpretation of Sachin's wording's at the press "The declaration came by a surprise". Please also note the line that he spoke before this one "We had decided in the team meeting at tea that the declaration would come with some 10-15 overs to go for the day." Then he says that the declaration was a surprise because he knew round the corner but he didn't knew it would come so early. It was no way any blame on Mr. Dravid. In fact he is conveying that it was a team decision, but maybe the timing was a bit of surprise.
And if he speaks about coming close to 2 double centuries in 2 consecutive matches, what's wrong in analysis one's performance this way?? And if you can please show me one instance where Mr. Dravid, the so-called Wall, has sacrificed record for team..
If you say "Dravid has dared to declare at that situation..." and if Dravid thinks in the same line ( I am sure he doesn't) then he (Dravid) for sure is not a team player.

1998 was my greatest phase

Can someone remind Tendulkar about the Aussie attack of 1998 tour? Shame on you Sachin, that you feel proud to have scored against an attack spearheaded by Kasprowicz. We all know what you did when Aus toured with a full strength attack in 2001 or when India toured Aus in 2003.
Guys, just stop glorifying Tendulkar for every run he scores and every small thing he says. There is just no point in praising a selfish person. Just look at what he said, " I came close to scoring 200s in a row". Loser, why don't u say that the team is winning and so I am happy? He is not ready to take the blame when he fails in crucial matches, but wants credit for all useless runs he scores.
What makes him think that he had a good world cup? McGrath always had his number and was bang on target in the final. If Sachin thinks scoring 98 vs Pakistan is a big deal, let him be reminded that Yuvraj sealed the match and not him. But for Yuvraj's strokeplay down the order, Sachin's innings would have been a huge waste.

Hello Cricket fan..
I can't understand why each and every word spoken by Sachin is taken as a sin??
He is quite modest and just remember what others did with that so called weak Australian attack spearheaded by Kasprowitz..Scoring 2 match winning knocks in 2 innings, when nobody even had an intention to build partnership is not a joke. Its easy commenting. Remember..in that series we had lost all the matches against Australia having so-called weak attack..When Sachin put his commitment to bring that glorious victory to India, Australian attack sudde3nly started looking weak to CRICKET FANS like you. And about the Yuvraj Singh knock against Pakistan, if you feel without Yuvraj Singh India would not have won Pakistan match against Australia, its true because its a team game and "team wins or loses, not individuals" as Sachin puts it. Very often in the past and even now it always happens that our opening collapses to a shameful 30-40 in Tests and Sachin builds the innings...What about that?? And what about the 1999 World cup match against Kenya where India was a shameful 93/2 in 22 overs against Kenya!! and Sachin came in and took India to 340..??

Hey Guys,
U guys seem to be too obsessed with Tendulkar. I would like to remind you that scoring vs Shane Warne is no big deal for Indian batsmen. Remember, Nayan Mongia of all the people got a match winning century against Aussies in India!! Shane Warne was tonked all over the park by Mumbai players like Amol Mazumdar. Shane Warne may have a great record and may be the greatest by the time he finishes, but still he is no big deal for Indian batsmen. We are talking about pace bowlers guys, get a break!!
Coming to his figures in the 2001 series, that's exactly my point. His series and career figures always look good, because he scores when the pressure is off. What did he do when India was struggling in the Calcutta test? But for the parnetship by Laxman and Dravid which turned the series on it's head, the team would be no where near what it is today.
What did he do in the 2003 Aus series? Once again it was Dravid and Laxman to the rescue. He did score a scrappy double century in the 4th test and messed India's chances of winning the series by his selfish approach.
In Pakistan, it was Sehwag, Dravid and the bowlers. Wake up Guys and know your facts!!

arre cricket fan you are the most ignorant person i have seen.
in 1998 aussie attack was spearheaded by Shane Warne & not Kasprowicz. Warne is the best bowler in the history & especially on subcontinent wickets which favour spinners.
he took him on full time in that series.plus again in 2001 against a full fledged attack ( as you say it was ) here is sachins scores
65,76,10,10,126.17 not bad na !!
so get your basics clear & then comment.
