English cricket is full of nonsense
by Nirmal Kumar on Jan 27, 2003 01:43 AM  | Hide replies

This is in response to the above named article. I am not sure about the exact reasons for the state of English cricket. According to me, the current players are not bad compared to many other teams (excluding Australia and SA). But it is definitely to do with their thinking.

Most english cricketers do not give any damn to playing in Indian subcontinent, and they give have the logic that they can skip the tours to subcontinent because "they would like to be fit and fresh for Australian or SA tours". This is really funny. even if we grant that playing in subcontinent is not a high priority for them, they loose valuable practice and when they go for their "real" matched in Aus or SA, they just don't know what to do.

It would be good if their players are some more committed.
regards

Nirmal

You have just spoken my mind !!..good one.

I totally agree that unless the English accept the fact that cricket exists beyond the "Ashes", they will continue to remain in the current sorry state. Every English player makes 2 debuts - the less important international cricket debut and the more important Ashes debut !! During the current Ashes series, how many times did we hear David Lloyd,Bob Willis & Co. mention the terms "Ashes debut",the "maiden Ashes hundred" and "the maiden Ashes wicket" !! Well, England can continue to brag about Botham,Gower and the famous Ashes series victory of 1981 - because, with the kind of bits-and-pieces,"nothing" cricketers, therez not much to look forward to in the world cup...for that matter in the next 20 years at least!!!

In attitude and results I feel that English cricket today is very close to Indian cricket. However, it seems to me that they are the only cricketers who are still playing cricket as a game. All the others, with their 'do or die' attitude seem intent on turning this genteel, summer meadow game into an on-field war and destroying all the unwritten traditions of the game. So let us not be too critical of our English and Indian boys. As for singing in the shower after a defeat, how many of us office-goers don't like to unwind after work is done and forget whatever mess-ups may have occurred?

Neville Cardus wrote 'Cricket holds up the mirror to English society' or words very much to that effect.

The problem with our cricket, if it is such, is not with our cricket...

English cricket is full of hype - from the media and other sources. They are a hyped up lot, so they dont get any better. They luv to brag and hype up things....Same as football..They say Beckam and co. are the greatest, but England doesnt figure in the top 5 of this year. The English are always satisfied with one below the first spot - never fighters.

sir,

your article brinsg to light the imp fitness and disipline have in cricket, for that matter in any sport.

i thinks its a qusetion of harnessing the raw talent. the transition from mere raw talent to professionalism is tough and it needs proper guidance. i realy believe people like david gower,. who have an unblemished record till date should take thinsg in hand.

cheers

roh

PS: whats the captains name?
