Bedi unhappy with Indian Skipper
by Prabal on Apr 06, 2003 04:22 PM

Time and again we have seen Mr Bedi coming down heavily on Ganguly for whatever the Indian Captain did. I think Mr Bedi has forgotten his own stint as captain and owes us some explanation.

In his entire career as captain Bedi won only one series and that too against New Zealand and on home soil.

He lost to 2nd grade England team under Tony Greig. And worst of all India lost that series purely because of captaincy as Greig outsmarted Bedi in almost all the departments of the game and at every step. Bedi did not have a clue to what Greig did in that series and before he understood what was going on England were leading the series by 3-0.

I think that is the worst performance by an Indian team on home soil in last 30 years ( Considering the strength of the West Indian team led by Clive Lloyd in 1983 just after the world cup, you can not really blame Kapil Dev ) and Mr Bedi can definitely take all the credit for that debacle. Imagine the hue and cry made by this same gentleman when Steve Waugh,s steam roller demolished India in Mumbai in 2001 in the first test before being beaten 2-1 in the series.

At least India is winning almost all the home series for the last ten years. Those of us who are following Indian Cricket for a long time have witnessed how these people have encouraged regionalism, politics and groupism in the team as a result of which India hardly ever won any home series also.

Bedi always takes pride in the fact that he was the captain when India scored that famous 4th innings 406 / 4 in the 3rd test of the 1976 series. But that match was won purely by the batsmen and he did not contribute anything to that ( and without taking anything away from our batsmen it must remembered that West Indies played three spinners in that match with only Micheal Holding and Bernard Julien sharing the new ball.

And then Mr Bedi came back from Australia ( loosing the series 3-2 ) patting his own back profusely for providing entertaining cricket. But the fact remains that he could not beat an Australian team in which their first 30 players were not playing due to Kerry packer ) and Bobby Simpson at the age of 43 came back as captain to lead a C or D grade team to victory. The only name worth mentioning in that team was Jeff Thomson who was at the twilight of his career.

And now we see his performance as the Indian Coach. It is the same Bedi who as a coach publicly went against his capatin Mohammed Azharuddin for electing to feild in the first test at Lord,s in 1990. If as a coach you don't have confidence of the captain and vise-versa then you have no business to be their as the coach ad you yourself should admit that you are an absolute failure and should immediately resign.

And as a player his fielding was just to be seen to believe. He was even worse than what Ganguly is as fielder. In fact I remember once one radio commentator compared Bedi with a roller ( not a bowler } because that is what he resembled.

So Mr Bedi, please leave Indian cricket alone. We have seen enough damage done by you to it. The present bunch of cricketers ( yes, including Ganguly ) are much much better than what you were ( they may have less cricketing talent ) and at least earned the position of no. 2. In your times India were just a poor 6th or 7 th.

And I have not talked about the Pakistan series ( 1978 in Pakistan ) at all.

i would like to say that Indian Skipper Sourav Ganguly is not at all best captain because in presence of Sachin, he realised that his team will perform his best in every match, but sometime sachin would not in his greatest form, then what he will do. I have seen all the matches in which Ganguly has performed when Sachin is not in his good performance. Actually, i felt that Sourav is staying as a Captain due to Sachin Tendulkar because if you just drop the Sachin for few matches, as a result, you have to struggle in their forms. The whole thing is that Sourav's decision in the final match to bat second is losing of confidence and we got the result as a World Cup, 2003 and after that he simply denies that our boys are played in the whole tournament except Australia, but lastly, he has played a game or politics due to his ego came out.

I finally want to say that Sourav Ganguly is not the best player in the world and if you don't want him to drop from the team, then keep him down the order without the captainship, otherwise he will definitely played another politics. The thing is that you have to play for the country not for himself and his face shows that how he just want the self-respect from the others and didn't realise the benefits of the team.

excuse me?????
couldnt get ur point.do u mean to say that the best player in the team deserves to be the captain.or do u mean to say that team india is where it is now because of sachin and sachin alone.wrong in both points,we all know of sachins stint as the captain and how successful he was.and gone r the days when india depended only on sachin to win matches.what politics r u talking about.continuing with the same players when they r not performing well.well, we wouldnt have got players like sehwag, yuvraj and kaif if such "politics" hadnt happened.i also couldnt understand the point of"self respect of the captn".sorry to say ur message is way off the mark

Are we doing justice to our captain ??
by Ritwik Ghosh on Apr 06, 2003 04:01 PM

i am writing this article apropos to the Bishan Singh Bedi issue and about what he said about the captain.Everyone knows that Bedi cant tolerate Sourav right from the days he made his comeback to the indian team and proved him wrong, but thats doesnt mean he will publicly say anything about the captain who after Kapil Dev is the only skipper to take India into the finals. He doesnt have a right to say that.Has there ever been such a big an issue about the captain?Even when Azharuddin couldnt take india even to the super sixes -was he nailed this way?? And regarding the comment the skipper has made that he himslef built the team-we all know the truth. He picked the guys even when they werent doing well and he really got the team together. The problem is people like Bedi think that the crowd in india are a bunch of fools and he is the only person who understands cricket out here.He really is a fool to believe that. The crowd is following the game and knows what is the truth.Bishan singh bedi should stop making a cartoon of himself by saying all these things about the most succesfull indian captain.

Bedi'sremarks reg.captaincy
by amitabhamajumder on Apr 06, 2003 02:58 PM

Actually BisenBedi is suffering from frustration,
as Gavaskar,Kapil,Sachin,Ganguly are world famous in
Cricket. When he was the captain of Indiateam,it was already proved that he is the most selfish captain among allothers in India. Many examples are there.
So,what he has remarked reg.captaincy of Ganguly,it is nothing but reflection of frustration only.

Bishen Singh Bedi

Hi,
Is there an end to Bedi's comments and analaysis? He has retired and we have had enough of him. When the nation is not even ready to hear comments about greats like Kapil and Gavaskar, why is Bedi given his chance to comment.
He has always been a negative critic of the indian team or any of the players and we fans would say that we are sick of hearing him talk about the current players. I would give this old fellow a pat on the back for his contribution and say that it is time he shuts his mouth and relaxes on his chair and also let the players do the talking.
Well, I would say that most of us agree Ganguly as a captain has been extra-ordinary. So... it is time we all turn positive about or team. Let us let them grow.

Thanks
Prakash
