yes indeed!! India needs a test opener. Gambhir can fill in that slot. Hope he plays well and does not go the Sadagopan Ramesh way. I am so sorry for this Ramesh. He was playing well when he was axed from the team. Hope Gambhir takes that opening place in test matches. Salvi must also establish himself as for the Australian tour, we need a right left fast bowling combination. No need for Srinath to come to Australia. We will go with Zaheer, Nehra and Salvi. We need yougsters. Srinath, we salute you for a great performance in your extraordinary career!!!!Hope your career serves as inspiration for youngsters in India!!

Parthiv Patel's debut in ODI?
by Gautam on Apr 02, 2003 11:06 PM  | Hide replies

This article incorrectly states as the Bangaladesh tour will be Parthiv's debut, which in fact was the NZ tour.

I beg to differ with you. Sadagopan was never a good batsman. Yes, he scored well and has a good average initially. Did you watch him play the world cup matches. He was a great insult to the Indian team.He performed well on domestic pitches. But had a poor temperament.Remember how he usually used to get out immediately after he made his own 50 in ODIs?

decent selection
by paul on Apr 02, 2003 11:01 PM

A decent selection. we could have included
Pathan and Rayidu keeping an eye for the
tough australian tour. ( that tour will make
or break for many. Otherwise they will score
tons of runs in sub-continent. Kele's selection
is controvercial. At 30 he is not an investment for
the future. On the other hand he has average of 60
in first class matches. and did well in WI. Fair
that he should be rewarded. Chopra is unlucky too.

Chance for young turks to show off
by Vijay on Apr 02, 2003 10:26 PM  | Hide replies

Yet again, No Tamil Nadu player in action.
Is this shows, no one fit to play from Tamil Nadu. OR its again discrimination against TN?

TN's pace bowler Sriram was given only one match chance to prove him sometime ago.

Robin Singh and Ashish kapoor never made to Indian team, till the time they played for TN. As soon as they moved to another state, they got their chance.

Unless Tamil guys, boycott India matches, we will not have our share.

I strongly second the thought. What on earth is happening. At least try beating our Tamilnadu team in ranji trophy then you justify your selection. The best team in the domestic circuit does not find a single player in its team for the national team.Shame on you selectors

Good Decision
by Indian fan on Apr 02, 2003 09:32 PM

Selecting the young breed for the upcoming triangular series is a very positive sign and would help Indian cricket to touch new heights. Breeding new players in such tournamenrs would help in building up there big match temperament.

Kudos to the national selectors for coming up witha good time.

Some other players
by Satyaki on Apr 02, 2003 09:08 PM

Definitely the other Delhi opener missed out because of quota system. I doubt if Dravid and Ganguly were from the same state, they might not have debuted at Lords in the same match. But what happened to Vinayak Mane (Bombay or Maharastra). I really liked the way he played McGrath and Co, last time when the Aussies toured India. Another thing, how many chance will Agarkar get, and what more he has to do to get out of the team (Yeah I know, he didn't get a chance in WC .. but that is one big reason for India winning 8 on the trot). Isn't it time for Irfan Pathan to get a break?

Parthiv
by Vignesh on Apr 02, 2003 08:50 PM

Faisal,

Parthiv has already made his ODI debut in NZ. ALso shewag is an automatic choice as he is assured a place in the test and ODI teams while Kaif is still trying to make it to the test team. Also this would have been an ideal opportunity to have picked up two allrounders powar comes to my mind. We have batting strength so it is better to go for bowling allrounders.

south left out
by ram on Apr 02, 2003 08:26 PM  | Hide replies

Of course , the Gambirs , Kales are good.

But the selectors have completely ignored the south zone.
You can find a hell lot of players who are far better than any new guy in this team. This is not fair.
Mr Brijesh Patel , there is no need to be ashamed at least to pick outstandingly talented players from your zone.

a load of pointless arguements and discussion
the current indian side got its wonderful balance because of the 6 batsmen-1-wk batsman-4 bowlers formula...doesnt matter whom we try, a lot of prospects seem exciting, a lot of bright young stars to try out, but, ultimately, only 11 can play, and 1 of those 11 is the wicketkeeper...we cant play 8 batsmen like west indies (or rather, we dont want to do that...)...in the circs, bottomline is, until and unless parthiv patel learns to bat, and bats decently, this new indian side is gonna do miserably...we have no chance of winning the dhaka tournament to begin with...
