Of course, he is south Indian. His full name is Vijender Kumar Ayengar. He is from the southern state of Haryana, which has the best collection of south indian culture.
In any case south indians are rocking in olympics from the begining. Avinav Vindra, Micheal Phelps, Karl Lewis all are south Indians.

For the first time I really feel proud. we have managed to win 3 medals atleast. Indian MALES have done a MASCULINE act by winning shooting, boxing and wrestling. I feel really ashamed by Anjali Bhagwats and Anju George and Sania Mirzas performance. They were never expected to win medals but they were so shameless that they blamed others for their failures. They were physically unfit, then why did they compete. I think these ladies should hand their shoes and give way to the younger ones

I agree with you PK. The issue is not just competing but giving your best. I have a tremendous respect for the women swimmer from South Africa who has only one leg, being disabled she fought shoulder to shoulder with the healthy and lost just by a couple of minutes more than the winner. We expected such spirited display from our female athletes. I would also like to praise Saina Nehwal for her spirited display in badminton. She is young just 19 and just because of her anxiety she failed to be patient at crcial moments, otherwise she would also have won a medal for us. Last year Anju George publicly criticised PT Usha and she that she herself (Anju) was the best female athlete ever. PT usha kept quiet and said time will prove and today time has proved that PT usha was far better than Anju. Usha lost her bronze by 1/100th of a second.

I love what Saina has done. She did it all by herself. Badminton is no easy game & she had not much experience. If she had been given proper game plan by her coach she would have won. In TT, badminton, Boxing, etc gameplan wins you 60% of the game.
To my knowledge, it is a big Zero. I dont know how they miss in shooting? Had Pak Govt sent some LeT guys to Olympics (instead of sending them to India) they would have won atleast some Gold/Silver/Bronze medals to Pak?

They always aim for the wrong place & get cut into half........

We need to stop competing with Pakistan, there is a much bigger world out there. If our only goal in life is to be better than Pakis, then we have set our standards really low.

The information is incorrect...I do remember that Pakistan beat India in the 1960 Rome finals to claim the hockey gold...4 years later at Tokyo, India avenged the loss and struck gold, with the Pakistanis settling for silver...Hockey apart, I don't think Pakistan has won anything...

Forget PAKI players even their soldiers do not know to shoot properly and cannot aim. That is whay they have lost 4 battles to India. LOL

Friends gone are the days when average indian was thought to be small and weak.George Bush is write we Indians and Chinese are eating all the food he hhahah and getting stronger.Trust me guys there are really strong guys n Girls who can get medals in boxing, wrestling, weightlifting and other power sports. If we can Produce Khali in WWE who is the biggest monster, hight time our govt recognises such strong athletes.Hats of to Bhiwani for nurturing talent .I hope all parents in cities take cue from smaller towns and stop forcing kids to become nerds.Hats off to the Rural India,
RE:WHO SAYS INDIANS ARE NOT TOUGH

The only problem is that there brains run to the wrong places (like eating CHAARA instead of Human Food) & their brawns get drowned in screwing each other over petty regional, religious etc isues. After all this, poor souls have no time to pay their attention to become World Beaters.........
Now since india has shone in boxing pak will take interest in it just the way they took interest in hockey after our olympics golds in it and later cricket after we succeeded in 1983 word cup :-)

RE:how come india gets bronze for sure?
by Preity bhatia on Aug 20, 2008 09:06 PM
No...both the losing semifinalists get bronze medals. So even if he loses the semis, he will at least get a bronze.
RE:how come india gets bronze for sure?
by vikram on Aug 20, 2008 09:06 PM
All semifinalists in contact and fight sports get the bronze automatically.
It is the policy in Olympics.
However Vijender should not rest upon the bronze , but should go ahead to conquer the gold, and prove himself to be the best middle-weight boxer in the world.

if he won semi final then silver is assured -). bassically anyone lossing semi will get broze since thier is no fight for 3rd & 4rth place in boxing
RE:how come india gets bronze for sure?
by Amitabh on Aug 20, 2008 09:05 PM
No, if he wins semis he will get either gold or silver depending on whether he wins or loses in the finals.
RE:how come india gets bronze for sure?
by hemant patni on Aug 20, 2008 09:04 PM
It is assured bcoz two losing semifinalists share bronze in boxing. There will be no match to decide 3rd and 4th places. For scoring details you can see wikipedia article on boxing

The News is correct... Boxing championsips are FOUR medal events in Olympics, there is no Bronze medal fight. If you dont advance to finals, you get bronze. These boxers have made the country proud.. 3 individual medals in 1 olympics.. awesome begining!!
RE:how come india gets bronze for sure?

There are 2 bronze medals in boxing. Both the losing semi-finalists will get bronze. If he wins the semi-final he'll go to the final and will assured of a silver. And if he wins the final he'll get gold. There is no bout between the losing semi-finalists for the bronze. Both will get bronze.
