More and more you talk/ work more chances of having success as well as adverse effects. If we see our civilisation- they say more than 5,000 years old! we know many who vanished and even some who are at the brink of ... Indian civilisation due to its age, has to have sort comings as well as good things. Social sortcomings are bound to be more as our part of the world has been long ruled by the people not having real association with the local people (say to the land). so they ruled and did the things necessary for that- and no where you can see the scars of the wounds inflicted by the rulers better than on the social structure. the present onslaught on the brahmins is neither totaly new nor the worst. Brahmin as a group have been and always have been tortured by miopic rulers. the reason being that brahmins as an intellectual group have been most influential and powerfull. and rulers feel it difficult to handle them. as an extension to this statement, everyone- brahmin as well as others should know- they are the most experienced one to know how to remain on the top of the society- rulers may come and go, but socialy they have been on the top- because they know how to reamin there- and we- the so called 'shudras', either failed to learn from them or if succeeded, we disowned our community- because we hate ourselves. brahmins might have created the caste system, but we have helped them to continue the system, earlier by serving them/ feeling proud by being blessed by them, now by making them stronger . . . .. there are historical facts regarding that and if some one wants i can produce. simple- Tamilnadu is the basin for the so called 'social justice' for long, so much so that in government institutions hardly we find any brahmin. what happened to them? did they become untouchables? NO! They became stronger without government help! they went abroad and now they are coming back wealthier and more powerfull and our social justice lords praise them! the base line- fools- don't be happy wise men- don't worry if a brahmin is worrying- he is miopic- no more a brahmin. if a shudra is not happy by the overtones of the politicians- he has become wise! real shudras raise slogans for and against the rulers. real brahmins- sit down, find the way out in any given condition. and if any ruler is realy worried about the down trodden- he should SILENTLY arrange amenities for the civilians. No school, no teacher, no hospital, no doctor, and they want the down trodden to take benefit of the policies. Last more than 50 years- same family people have been taking benefit of the reservation, government policies. can government say how many percentage in the reserved category come from fresh family? caste was a disadvantage and only disadvantage 50 years ago- now for many (for whom it was disadvantage earlier) it has become advantage are more than catse there have become other factors of advantage like urban area, main land, geography .. . . LETS THINK FOR THE NATION PLEASE. NO MORE POLITICS.
what periyar did not mention that the chaturvarna was first adopted according to the division of work, not on the basis of caste.in history,we would find several intercaste, even inter religious marriage including friendship between different communities-rajput king married a bhil girl, sri krishna was a yadav who married several khsatriya girls, akbar and jehangir married rajput hindus, sri ram had a friend like guhak who was a chandal, laxman got knowledge from ravana when he was in death bed.so ancient india was not full of casteism.jabal stayakam was welcomed by maharishi goutam who termed satyakam as brahmin(satyakam had no registered father),chandragupta maurya got the title from her mother who was a dasi and chandragupta maurya and samrat ashoka were not the representative of upper castes.sufi movement, bhakti movement was against casteism and religious narrowness.sri ramakrishna and swami vivekananda faught against casteism not balming the hinduism alone.so i think periyar missed and crossed the line.he could have mentioned the tolerism of hindus who gave place to other religious groups.there is not a single evidence in the ancient, medieval even in some parts of modern world in the field of religious tolerance in christian and islam country.also hinduism accomodated several different thoughts within a religion-here we have idol worship, nirakar god, even we get atheist philosophy, every person can woRship god in any foRm in this religion.hinduism is the only religion which never involved in forceful religious conversion.but pity is that periyar did not mention these positive sides.but sOme extent he spreaded a sense of hatred in the name of abolishing casteism.i donot know why.yes upper castes are very much responsible in many cases.but almost all of the great persons are from upper castes who made indians proud by their tallent, dedication not by their caste identity, what periyar also did not mention that many people from upper castes did several social reforms-RAJA RAMMOHAN ROY,ISWAR CHANDRA VIDYASAGAR were brahmin but did signficant social reform, sri ramakrishna vivekananda also did their best, upper caste personalities were greatly involved in the country's freedom struggle(subhas bose, tilak, nehru ,gandhi ,gokhale, bagha jatin, jatin das, lala ljpat and many names)where the leadership was maintained by them.even the great achiever of tamilnadu-srinivas ramanujam,cv raman was from upper castes.i donot know why he ignored all this.ok,but still he has a place in my mind for his movement for social justice which some extent changed as a movement of hatred at latter stage.

more than castism sufism was surrender of brahmins to the muslim rulers- in my opinion- you seem to know more about the history so no argument with you but that is my knowledge till date and i will like to learn more. but i think that was one of the superb examples how brahmins managed to remained on the top of the society

sufism was created by the a section of MODERATE muslims to have sense of harmony and respect among the prevailing religions (sufi pirs and saints are till now worshipped even by the hindus in many parts of india) not by the brahmins-salim chisti, srhabardi, mainuddin chisti were muslims not brahmins.
It is ironical that our text books for children never had any mention of EV Ramaswamy Naikar and his great work againist ills of Hinduism and Indians. Read a lot about nehrus, Gandhis and even had a nondetail textbook about Kasturibhai, but never read about Periyar
It is time that his ideas and thinking should be inculcated among children by bringing alesson in CBSE and NCERT text books

History versus present problems. Kindly try to portray your hero in a new name. I am able to see yourside, but the vessel cannot be periyar there. Discussions will follow.
The word dravidian is a 'sanskrit word' meaning a person who lives in a 'peninsula'. It is not a race. The real dravidians [inhibitants] are the tribes that live in hills of OOty i.e. Thodars, sedars etc., All the thevars, gounders chettiyar, naickers ..... are all aryans who came to south and pushed the REAL DRAVIDIANS to the brink. Mr. EVR you have fought for rights of ARYANS! I do not think he has ever seen the face of a Real dravidian!
I want to be a great reformer like periyar and a messiah of illiterates. may be a hundred million people in India are illiterate and all they can do is print their thumbs. None of them is a doctor. I demand reservations for them in medical schools. u bet I will be in Central Cabinet soon.

it's a joke. a sarcasm. So Suneet dear, just chill. I am symapthetic to the plight of tamil brahmins.
Finding himself in a state of siege, Venkatesan, being a Dalit himself, took the initiative of researching into almost all the publications brought out by 'Periyar Suyamariyadai Prachara Nilayam' and also into the writings of Periyar's contemporaries like Annadurai, M P Sivagnanam, comrade Jeevanandam, KAP Viswanathan, etc. Not being totally satisfied he went through all the magazines and journals like 'Viduthalai', 'Kudiyarasu', 'Dravida Naadu', 'Dravidan' etc, relating to the period during which Periyar lived in order to ascertain the truth and also to get hold of solid and irrefutable facts.
As a great believer in Hinduism and Hindu philosophy, his sensitive soul was tortured by the baseless attacks of Periyar on Hindu Gods and Goddesses. I would like to quote his own words in this context: 'I could not help viewing Periyar's uncivilised and barbarous attacks upon my chosen Gods and Goddesses and my own Hindu faith as wanton attacks on my dear and sacred mother who begot me. My search into the works of Periyar and my extensive reading of all his articles gave a rude cultural shock to me. I was greatly dismayed by the hellish hatred of Periyar towards my faith and towards my chosen Gods and Goddesses'.
