White woman and India
by R.M. on Aug 03, 2004 07:47 PM

Thanks Mr Gautier.
I grew up in Calcutta and cannot but agree with the essence of the article. Surprsisngly in the responses most did not see the forest for the trees.
It is not about why Soia Gandhi was elected and what white people think of Indians. It about our cultural biases to fair skin.
As for Mother Theresa, thank you Mr Gautier. How many Indians who do as much work with underprivileged have received Nobel Prize. I guess you have to convert poeple to Catholicism to earn that.
We without a doubt are biased to white skin. How many of us marry poepe of darker skin from other cultures vs white skin people. Wake up!!!

The White Woman Speaks

I found your article to be very interesting. I am a student, and fascinated by India's culture, movies, art, and language(s). I agree with you, India should definately look to Herself to solve Her problems, etc. India has such a wonderful and important history (mathematics, medicine, architecture, etc), but is somehow plagued by political corruption, poverty and hunger. I hope India can learn to throw off the yoke of my civilization, but I would still love for there to be finally a peace between our cultures and races. I hope to live and see it.

Truth we knew, but avioded as ever

I agree about the white skin attraction and some unchallenged universally accepted theories we nurture in our culture. We hate Britishers and yet we adopted their entire constitution (Just like we adopted Pizza Hut with Indian toppings or MacDonald with patties suitable for Indian palate, again with attraction for the west). The truth about Congress and politics is that good leaders have lost their confidence. Hence the big-wigs think it right to harp on another Gandhi wave. I will not be surprised if in the next elections we see either of the two Gandhi siblings up and the whole country overwhelmingly glad that some Gandhi is still there, as if Gandhi family were given the right to rule this country. What we need is someone who can change the economic facade, improve standards of living, provide basic amneties to masses. How long have we seen the scams which seems to increase in order every time; commissions, task forces, ministries being set up for studying some idea (like linking the rivers, golden quadrilateral, etc) which look great on paper. What happened to guys who were caught in those big scams, are they acquitted or holding some ministry in government. Its time for action

At first I do not even know what to think about this article. I am just surprized!!! I did not know that some people could think of such things, that Indian people think white is better then brown or other way around.

The simplest possible reason I think that Sonia Gandhi was asked to be prime minister, is because she is from the Nehru's family, a family which has been involved in politics forever. She was not asked to become prime minister because she was born in Italy, because she is white, or because she is women.

White people might attract an Indian person because they are seen rare in India and they are somewhat different. However, there is no reason to make conclusion that Indians (brown skins) think white people (or any other races) are better then brown.

I think author still needs to learn more about Indians and Indian mentality.

White ruler
by Sunethra on Jul 27, 2004 12:03 AM

Hi,

My name is Sunethra. I live in Canada. I am 16 years old. I read your article and I agree completely. It is time for India to wake up see that people are still the same even if you are white. It is sad that India has voted for someone like Sonia because India in my opinion is better off with someone more superior.............

Good one

think the article is very relevant.from the very beginning of the democratic version of this nation,it has been ruled by intellectuals who had their education under the British system or some British University,be it Nehru or Jinnah.and who can deny that British were hellbent on inculcating a deep sense of inferiority in the Indian psyche. These intellectuals, even Gandhi practised just those values which the British had tried to popularize. So,history books before/after evidence although covered all the weaknesses of the Indian culture/psyche just failed to mention anything about the greatness of it.All British ideals were tried to copy.White became hip.Although more than 80% of population is hindu, talking bout hinduism or about hindu religious leaders became a no-no in political circles. These brand of politicians, mainly from the Congress have done great service to the nation and they still exist, some of them who were very active just after election pleading Sonia to take the prime-ministership.

I definitely do not ahve any such fatal attraction for white skin , and as for bollywood beauties..well susmitha sen is gorgeous, as is bipasha basu and we think no less of them.
I dont know if I would compare Sonia and Mother Teresa in the same line.
Why do we love Mother Teresa and worship her ....thats a no brainer. Had she been black we would have loved her the WORLD over just the same.
About people begging Sonia to take over ... don't judge a nation bcos of their politicians. Thats unfair.
