2nd review is better
by Anupam Sharma on Jan 23, 2009 12:54 PM

I have seen the movie yesterday & i have to agree with the second review as the honest one.In fact Raja tried to play smart this time by following Nikhat kazmi & the international media going ga ga over it.Amitabh's observation is also right in his blog.Overall engaging but average stuff.Would have definately passed of as a b grade stuff if any Indian had attempted it as a director.Shah rukh you have not lost anything to Anil by not doing it.

i completely agree with this second review....though i can give it three stars......it just reminded me of 1970s hindi movies....there was probably nothing new in the movie for indians but it seems this was a new visual experience for westerners......may be thts why it got hyped.....the contradictions prevailing in india has always been a subject of fascination for western people. But this chaos is the reason which makes indians so mentally strong.....i mean we dont need tap water in mineral water bottles to remain healthy..........evrything depends on the way one thinks.....
at the end movie was good but i have watched many hindi movies of this kind so i felt no reason for 10 oscar nominations....but considering other factors it is understandable..(with regards to foreigners, after all oscars are the awards instituted by them)

Somebody wrote down what I've been feeling about this movie all the while.
Great concept......flawed execution

You are right about Rahman. He has given some great music that has gone unnoticed to Oscar people.

by Amish Bhimani on Jan 23, 2009 11:12 AM  | Hide replies

hello rediff guys, stop giving two reviews for each movie, cos both the reviews are never same, one gives it 5 star and other 2 star. this means tht rediff guys are playing safe, they dont have their own judgemen. and nobopdy can catch them cos if film is good they will say we had given 5 star and if film fails they will say we had given 2 stars only.......... stop playing safe , and give ur judgement, if u cant then dont publish..........what say guys...........

A review is the reviewers judgement. The website does not write the review. It only publishes the thoughts of the individual reviewer. 2 reviews give different perspectives of the same film. Depending on which side of the coin you belong to, you tend to identify with the review.

Much hyped movie
by raju on Jan 23, 2009 11:07 AM

We are still Ghulam of white skin people. Any thing accepted and praised by them is automatically accepted by us. AR Rehman is a genius and he has far more melodious music than slumdog millionaire. So there is no need to get certificate from West about his music. If we talk about movie, this nothing but to show the ugly image of our poor people but we are celebrating the movie like anything. Raja Sen has given 5 star to this movie, it means movie is not tolerable whereas Sumit Bhattacharya's review is perfect. This is an average movie. When west accepted our Yog as Yoga then we became crazy about our own thing. AR Rehman has given us Ghajni, Dilli6, Jaane tu ya Jaane na , Rangeela and many more Music of these movies are many time better than this SM.

Hah!
by killer sucks on Jan 23, 2009 11:03 AM

Well.. I havent seen the movie, havent listened to the soundtracks.. But i am sure about one thing.. This movie is nominated for so many awards ONLY because it is directed by an English Director.. Lagaan, A Wednesday and many other movies could have easily won Oscar..

Oscar is an award for English movies and it will remain so.. We(Indians) do not have many reasons to cheer for it coz its biased

Sita Shanti
S( l )ums it up perfectly
by Sita Shanti on Jan 23, 2009 10:58 AM

Your reveiw is absolutely precise this time, exactly my sentiments. There is no soul stirring music in the film, the song Jai Ho is ok, Rahmans Lagaan, Earth, Swades and Rang De Basanti had better music scores.
There was no need to show the slums , especially the Amitabh Bachchan scene, No slum dweller would go to that extent for God Himself.I didnt find any sensitivity in the direction, no superlatives in the performances except for the two young Salim and Jamal.Anil Kapoors sarcasm looked contrived,Irfan Khan and Mahesh Manjrekar are wasted .
Though the purpose of the film was not to degrade India in any way, we could have done without this sort of portrayal too.
Obviously Oscars standard has taken a big fall when you compare this to the likes of Forest Gump, Schindlers List, Life is beautiful.........
