Rahman - The greatest ever...??
by Nimz on Oct 22, 2008 10:27 AM  | Hide replies

Why do we have to wait for someone to turn 70 before we cud really appreciate him....??

I agree Rahman did compose some mediocre tracks over the years, Though few and far in between, But I'm sure even Stockhausen and Liszt did too - The point is time only remembers their gems and thats how everything with age turns legendary - Music, Literature, Movies, Artists....And talking abt Yuvvraaj, I guess time will remember "Dil ka Rishta" and "Zindagi" for bringing in western classical, orchestra symphony and broadway musical mix to hindi music for the first time - Something only Rahman cud have managed!!

Clearly he's not infallible - Nobody is - But I wud like to see how many disagree that Rahman is the greatest we have ever had along with Naushad and S.D. Burman...??

there are much better composers in india than naushad, sd burman and rahman..
rehmans stands no where whn compared to illayaraja. IRs music was simple gloriously melodious wit an apt use of musical instruments and moreover his music was natural rather than the heavy mixing done by arr.
whn u look at classic composers, ms vishwanathan was way ahead of sd burman or naushad. but mine and so w'd most mallu guys wit a classiacl taste would say that raveendran was peerless. his compostions had melodies, classicals both hindustani and carnatic, folklore everything. and the most imp part is that even if his songs were so simple to listen to, the singers shd be of execptional quality to sing his songs.
nowdays in malayalam channels there are lots of reality shows for best singers, very few ppl try to take up a raveendran song and even if they do, they w'd fall drastically short of an average performance. that sums up the gr8 man.

if ur a true music lover,
watch this song and see the use of interludes. maybe u'll appreciate..

cheers guys.
this post is not to create a divide or hatred. but just to let ppl know that there are even better composers who are not highlighted by the media.

hey RK...

I believe ones taste of music largely depends on exposure, Empirically or relatively.
Before I address the point, I did check ur IR track - Even though I didnt get a word - It sounded fantastic! Whos the singer? Would love to hear Ravendran and Vishwanathan too, If u cud suggest some of their best songs...

Now, I chose Naushad, SDB and ARR based on WHAT I've heard. In fact I was a huge fan of R.D Burman too, Before I started listening to western classical and realized many of his songs have been shamelessly 'inspired'. A German wud tell u Richard Strauss is the greatest composer ever, An Italian wud say Rossini, An Austraian wud say Schubert, An American wud say Braxton, Another German might say Beethoven! Point is :- I've no right to comment on composers u spoke abt cause, Simply, I havent heard them!....Meanwhile, If u dont listen to Hindi music I'd suggest Burman's Kagaaz Ke Phool, Guide...Naushad's BaijuBawra, Mughal-E-Azam...Rahman's Roja, Taal and of course Dil se - arguably the finest hindi movie soundtrack ever.

Finally, Like all forms of Art - Music is an extremely subjective matter. I know guys who feel Rafi was over-rated and I know people who cud attain enlightment listening to Himesh (trust me, I do!)...And I guess we gotta respect that cause one likes what one likes, Nobody has the right to look-down upon others sayin "My taste is better than urs"

Also, this being a Music based discussion - Nice to see relatively non-venomous posts for a change!

Overrated!
by Sameer Kumar on Oct 22, 2008 06:40 AM  | Hide replies

True! A very mediocre score. And let's not praise AR Rahman for the sake of praising him. This very score would have been called "average" if it had been composed by Vishal Shekhar; and "awful" if Anu Malik had made it. So let's look at the music, not the musician.

''Music King'' presents his ''Yuvvraaj''
by kumar gomathinayagam on Oct 21, 2008 11:43 PM  | Hide replies

continuing my earlier comment lets see how the songs are

out of 9 tracks one is a remix, other one is with dialo-music, so can count 7 tracks.

In those seven Dil Ka Rishta is exceptional, infact now Aaja tu meri also does not sound good in front of it (first i liked Aaja.. at the outset).

Manmohini takes you to next level with its classical value (vijay is too different from his earlier Sooni Sooni of Cheenikum).

Zindagi is rahman's vintage classic, this will live for long time.

then it comes the already hit Aaja tu meri dost, its again rahmans beautiful melody (in Kisna, its ARRs Hum hain is pal was remembered more than any other song, though he scored only two songs out of 8 tracks for that film, the other one was an english track. This one will be in the same league.

then 3 songs are remaining (shano, muskura and mustam). we dont know how they will fare when the movie get released, may be Muskura can be a hit after release and mustam too. But ARR should have thought Muskura and Mustam are Gulzaar's domain (he is a rare musician who respects lyricists)

come on guys, out of 7 tracks 4 tracks sound good, this will help to make the album hit, infact will help other 3 to become a hit also
or after the movie release.

I really wonder when it comes to ARR why we expect each and every track of an album should be exceptional, not just good score, and for others even a single track hit is enough to say an album is hit

so i think "King of Indian Music" has given his YUVVRAAJ

hi kumar gomathinayagam, the problem is that the average listener expect him to compose only melodies not situational tracks...there should be some write ups about how rahman revolutionized the scene and improved the quality of enjoyment. guys, please wait to get the movie released and then make a judgment. i aint no supporting rahman blindly but there will be some reasons when a sound track goes in a different path...lets wait and see.

cheers
thanks for the post kumar

kumar gomathinayagam

by kumar gomathinayagam on Oct 21, 2008 11:17 PM

Yeah, on day one (last Thursday) i too felt its not that good except that exceptional Tu meri dost hain.
but now i just look back how he has fared in Yuvvraaj, its truly amazing, a near perfect album.
first of all we should remember that this soundtrack is not just an album but what it requires for a film, just look back, when Jodha Akbar album was released every one was telling the same that it is too slow and not a good album, but later with the movie it sounded well, infact became a hit album. Not every movie would not be JTYJN where music can be peppy.
And more so its Taal where ARR created magic for which Subhash Ghai could not match and in the end the film did not survive, probabaly its his music that created so much expectation that finally its the music itself killed the movie.
so both of them must have adopted some restraint, still the album lives to expectations.

PLEASE READ THE INLAY CARD in CD (dont download from net and listen) then you will come to know what all about the songs are.
GULZAAR says when he SAW (watch the word SAW) on the big screen the music became majestic, so guys watch the movie and then think how songs are.
