This overdramatic article can only tell the imaturity of the writer. I'm sure at first all agreed that 'Black' was the right choice, but on second thoughts, no matter how brilliant 'Black' was, u dont want a copied script(the Miracle Worker) to represent India at Oscars. The Oscar committee might reject it at first look due to lack of originality and innovation, overlooking all the great performances.
On the other hand, 'Paheli' sure was a diaster with the Indian audiences, but we must realise that its theme was 'fiction' after all, which makes us wanna look at it differently and judge it accordingly. Moreover, it will show the Oscar committee something they have never seen before, something that is true and unique to India, and isnt that what really matters?
To top it all, I feel all the people criticising this decision, shud realise that the jury which selected 'Paheli', over all other great movies like 'Black', were a set of most established people in the field, who have a lot more depth of knowledge on the subject than any one of us. And if they did it, MAYBE there was a reason we cant understand!
I agree with you dear writer. You have put into words the thoughts of many of us who would not have benn able to describe the BEAUTY OF BLACK in such beautiful words. BLACK was out and out a CLASSIC. Not selecting it for an award very clearly shows that the Jury themselves were BLIND. Or rather, I would say that they were a bunch of FOOLS with no heart or feelings to understand the depth of each and every character. My heart and Wishes reaches out to the Entire Unit of BLACK. Forget the DUMB jury members, I am sure that this year's all film awards for Best Actor, Actress, Director etc., would go to BLACK and only BLACK.
This is a Great Article. Excellent. It's totally astounding not to see BLACK being nominated for Oscar. Rather a ghost has been nominated... What a shame.
- yours was a brilliant write-up but for this one line. Come on. This is the first SRK movie to be nominated for the Oscars and he hardly had anything to do with it! Venting your frustrations on one particular person in a public place isn't right. After all, i can't expect a person who's madly passionate about what they think is right to do the right thing....sorry and goodluck!

I think you are forgetting that SRK's Devdas also was an Oscar entry,so it was SRK's second.Coming back to all Paheli's critics, let me say though Black might be a better movie than Paheli quality wise,it had many flaws as well, let's count them: 1.It heavily ressembles Hollywood's classic The Miracle worker,so naturally it would have been rejected like Cannes 2.It showed little Indian culture, settings was almost like an English movie. In contrast Paheli is completely an Indian-it is based on Vijaydan Detha's Duvidha, whole story took place in Rajasthan, culture is also Indian. So I feel the great film scholars like Javed Akhtar,Shabana Azmi,Subhash Gai, Shyam Benegal are right in supporting Paheli
I am so heartbroken and frustrated. Right after seeing Black, i had promised myself that i will launch a site \'black4oscar.com\' to get black to the oscars. I did not keep my promise to myself :(
It is sad to see that the powers that be choose the useless Paheli over Black..SRK twisting arms or Amol Palekar doing the same? SLB i know is not necessarily interested in these things...
Dear REviewer, I completely agree with you. Thanks so much for posting your views. I wanted to post mine like you did, but you did much better than i would have and you conveyed our messages. Black is Black. Excellent actors, acting, directions, dialogue and excellent everywhere. This movie is incomparable and atleast NOT WITH IDIOTIC PAHELI. DIXIT PATEL (HOUSTON,TX ,USA)
It is a shame that such a brilliant movie like 'BLACK' was not sent as a nomination for the OSCARS. I'm sure a thousand others will echo the same sentiment.
I hope you are aware that Black is an imitiation of a Hollywood movie 'The Miracle Worker' (1962). I do not think it is very intelligent to nominate an imitated movie to the Oscars. The MPAA celebrates originality and creativity in movie-making.
I applaud you, Bhavna Giani!...That was a beautiful article and so poignantly true. Black should have been India's official entry for the Oscars. There is no doubt about it...after reading your article, even the jury members should hang there head in shame. They have once again managed to deprieve the Indian Film Industry of international recognition and respect.
