Why Indian Railways is incurring losses under Mamata
by raman govindan on Jan 28, 2011 01:13 PM  | Hide replies

it is not only railways that runs poorly, but most the departments of the center, the states and the municipalities are in a similar condition.

the politicians who head the ministry at the center, the state or at the municipality do not get elected on how efficiently they had run the tasks for which they are appointed but by the caste equation, ethnic affiliation, linguistic affinity and religion etc. they are embroiled while in the administration to retain their electability on such attitudes only. and they they do not want to share the responsibity with the civil servants nor seek their impartial advice. but the politicians would like the facts presented to him in such a way that the resultant decision, aids and adds to his popularity among the constituents of his support base but not national requirement.

the simple people toil and add to the resources of the nation and for want of other suitable mechanism or political parties and leaders to govern, they have to elect the same sort of people again and again and retard their own growth. this condition will prevail until literacy reaches atleast 80 % average on national basis and common man can uderstand where the partisan advocacy at the local level should end and national interest should begin and elect such men to lead the nation!

She has no time to look after the matters of Railway Ministry. She can easily handover the minsitry to somebody else in TMC. Being an autocratic leader, she is not doing that. She doen't trust anybody else. May be after taking oath as next West Bengal CM, she will handover the ministry to somebody else. By that time Railways will be in deep trouble just like the case of BSNL.

All along the railways was making loss, but somehow lalu was street smart to juggle with the numbers and show surplus, as no company or institution as big as railways can turn from such huge profits to losses within 2 yrs and that two by the change of a minister who does not even handle the affairs day in and out, so please dont get fooled any longer by lalus figures.

To be fair, she should not be blamed because she hardly has time to look into Railways Ministry, when she is busy with Bengal. Other than reading the budget presented by the Officials, she has hardly paid any thought to the Railways.

5% profit..??
by abby Das on Jan 28, 2011 11:59 AM  | Hide replies

There is no calculations from either author or from any of my frinds who are posting here regarding the profit of railways.Expense has gone up by 1% while earning has gone up by 6%.(according to the author)...so a net profit of 5%.
Does any one contradict this..??

Rs 5 earned in 2008-09 is not same anymore today with 15% inflation, with cost of borrowed money increasing and therefore one needs to pay more interest to offset that which cumilatively would eat the operational profit.

Recently i travelled in train, i felt it serves a purpose to increase the fair with some reasonable proportion to keep the service quality intact.

Anyway the point i'm trying to make is, we didn't see any visionary changes in the operations. If China can lead the world with 500 km/hr trains connecting metro cities, with very low pollution impact, we can certainly follow that. We certainly need more trains, but just increasing the number would be having a reverse effect in terms of congestion, accidents etc.

She had a great chance to prove her mettle as to how she could change the fate of a state after assuming the cheif-ministership, but it seems she is going to be a change just for the sake of it. Fate of Bengal is not going to change anytime soon.

Didi is busy in conquering the Bengal turf at any cost.
by Rahul Singh on Jan 28, 2011 11:58 AM  | Hide replies

Didi is influenced by popular vote bank politics as she has to become next CM of West Bengal. There is no dearth of such leaders who for their own political ambition ignore or overlook the ground realities. I dont think she is too concerned with Railways. Her top most priority is to win the hearts of Bonks through populist measures and make a place for herself.

Abby Das - u r right. She is giving 100s each to every state. As a minister / politician it is easy to make promises. Are those trains running? It is the railways who are complaining. Not any opposition. Look at the lengthy ADs, numbers of proposals etc etc, number of people awarded jobs every day by her goons during ceremonies. Dont be brainwashed. Ofcourse Bengal needs a change, but that does not mean chhosing an unfortunate way just to make the change happen.
