One man, Anna Hazare, is fasting for us and you are still discussing cricket? Why not ask Padma Shree for Anna? India won the cup. forget it now.. Let's focus on more important issues..

True, when the time comes of giving Padma awards and Bharat ratna awards we can always discuss it but not in such advance. No use

A Dumb Nation
by Desi on Apr 07, 2011 05:41 PM  | Hide replies

If Sachin can get Bharat ratna, what sin has Kapil committed? He won the World Cup for India at a time when India were nowhere on cricketing map and in fact were considered a jok in ODIs. Can anyone say that his contribution is less than anybody as far as winning matches for the team is concerend (and not only personal glory and record)? What abt Gavaskar? He faced the pace battery of West Indies without helmets. Can Sachin do that?
Both Kapil and gavaskare were world record holders at a time when they got little support from the rest of the team. They withstood so much load that India was known as a one batsman and one bowler team. If anyone deserves any prize it is these two before any other cricketer.
In any case, it is a sad day for India when we want Bharat Ratna not for Baba Amte, Anna Hazare, Irom Sharmila but for cricketers.ovie actors and playback singers. Probably thsi is where the dumbing down of our generation has taken us to.

Media hype was not there at that time. Today media is there for everything - good or bad. Now media decides who should be conferred with a Padma award !!!!!

Hi Videshi
I was thinking of his test record. Surely you don't think that tests are less important than ODIs, do you? At least they were very important at that point in time. ODIs were just passtime, so to say.

give a cash citation
by harish krishnamurthy on Apr 07, 2011 05:28 PM

Gary should be given a huge cash citation as a recognition for his services to indian cricket, Padmashri is for indians. Further, he must be given a huge honour by the indian high commission in south africa. This is good for sports and business.

Too much of hype
by raghavendra r on Apr 07, 2011 05:27 PM  | Hide replies

This is simply idiotic. Cricket in India is given more importance than it really deserves. Bharat Ratna for Tendulkar, etc to somebody these are all rubbish. This is just a game and keep this as game, don't hype it too much. Also cricket world cup is participated only by 14 countries out of them 4 or 5 are low profiled teams. Among them winning a world cup is not that great. Of course, I am happy they won it. But not necessary to hype it so much.

Completely agree with you. Excellently put.

The government should be free to decide in its wisdom whether a citizen requires to be conferred a certain award. Nobody can or should pressurise the government into conferring the highest civilian award on any particular citizen. Far more illustrous personalities have waited all too long to be conferred the most coveted civilian award of the country.

It is very good for the country to have won the World Cup - it is good for the prestige of the country as also the fact that it binds the country together in a single stroke. But Sachin Tendulkar is a sportsperson and undoubtedly a noble person, but he has received ample monetary benefits for his skills. We must not forget he is a bad leader which is why he gave up captaincy to concentrate on his batting.

He should continue to do good work and the government will surely honour him appropriately as it has been doing till now. Whatever Sachin Tendulkar has contributed, he has received in return money and honours in ample reciprocal measure.
