KOSI FLOOD EACH YEAR CAN NOT BE TOTALLY STOPPED BUT CHEAP ALTERNATIVE IS AVAILABLE...
by hansen on Aug 30, 2008 10:08 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

It is not easy to take the Kosi floods which occurs each year. One must acknowledge that all that water flows down very fast from vast areas surrounding Mount Everest which accumulates to make Sapta Koshi in Nepal and then Koshi in Bihar. After the floods the terrain becomes highly fertile. Only that 2 months of each year there should be mass evacuation on high ground and food and shelter given at say free as well as at Rs. 2/- per meal and slove the issue. 27 cusecs of water means 27000 cubic feet of water per second and that much water can be controlled but how can you control 1.5 lakh cusec for two weeks every year with resources that the government has? No one will say this is not possible for obvious reasons but one must speak out the truth so that gullible poor may know the reality. This is of course my two cents.

what about strengthening the embankments? the height of the embankments can be raised taking into consideration the worst case scenario. 1.5L cusec for 2 weeks is like 20 L cusecs totally...25 L cusecs (totally) were released during the Surat floods in 2006 within a span of 8 days only !

Floods
by Shiv Almal on Aug 30, 2008 09:56 AM  Permalink

Lessons should be learnt from floods and there could be many things. Flood engineers, experts should go for flood-control. Some tv channels shows such programmes. Where is flood-control in any state in India? It is just heard about sometimes after a flood. Disaster management, rescue and relief all are at low manner.

For God's sake, set some accountability for Govt. bodies.....
by SS Kumar on Aug 30, 2008 09:42 AM  Permalink

If the Indian Government means business, it should give marching orders to the members of the Disaster Management Council of India for dereliction of duty in Bihar. They were either virtually sleeping or had not done their home- work well in time. It is high time we had accountability standards established in India
instead of the "Sab Chalta Hai" attitude. Clearly, their dereliction of duty has result- ed in avoidable loss of several precious lives.
It should be as punishable as a motorist running over pedestrians. By punishing them, the GOI can show other government departments that it means business and will not tolerate lame excuses.

Re: Balkanization of India

The problem lies with the people of Bihar as well. Why do you elect rotten politi- cians from your state, who, you know, care a damn about the people of Bihar and want to make only a fast buck ? Indian states should insist on a right torecall their MLAs/MPs say after 2/3 years, if they do not perform in Parliament or local legislative assemblies by showing measurable development improvements of their constituencies. It is high time, the people of India fought for electoral reforms. Right now, the only goal an MLA/ MP has, is how much illegal money can I make before my current 5 year term ends or the police arrest me ?

CGI inertia in Bihar is deplorable !
by SS Kumar on Aug 30, 2008 09:27 AM  Permalink

One more year and Bihar has suffered from devastating floods. The scenario repeats every year and sympathetic decibels from the succes- sive PMs includes extending grief to calling it a national calamity. The PM generously doles out Rs. 1000 cr. with an eye on upcoming elections.
Well, the proposal to interlink rivers nation- ally has been around for more than 2/3 decades now. What prevents the PM from initiating this long over due move immediately instead of crying over the damage after it takes place. Sure the entire national interlinking project will cost a fortune;however, why can't we make a small beginning from within Bihar. Each year, the CGI pays Bihar anywhere from Rs. 100 cr to 1000 cr and if we were to add up these sums paid over the last 20-30 years, I am sure the cost of interlinking rivers would have been more than met. The inertia of the CGI is deplorable and it tries to deflect account- ability by making a scapegoat of the local CM.
