Nuclear Deal
by mohit gupta on May 27, 2007 04:30 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The eminent scientists & comrades supporting the UPA Govt are against this deal. I would like to know how should India increase power production in the country to meet the incresing requirements of Industries, Agriculture & all other activities where power is badly required when there is hardly any scope with conventional material such as coal & oil. I hope our left parties are not thinking in terms of leaving India perpetually short of power hence economically backward to all other countries including China.

Dr. Gupta,
We have coal. We have hydro, thermal, solar, wind. In addition we have 2 other options. We have uranium in Meghalaya, Chattisgarh and Jharkand. We have 25% of the world's reserves of thorium.
The US wants to a) first cap and then dismantle our nukes b) make money selling us nuclear powwer plants and weapons. We should be wary of this. Negotiate from a position of strength. Jai Hind !!

Mr.Angelo D'Souza- Jai Hind
If we have coal, hydro, solar sources in sufficient quantity, why are we suffering from shortage of power after 60 yrs of independence?
Instead of developing Thorium which is available in this country our Atomic scientists are busy making atomic energy for military use ONLY neglecting nuclear energy for CIVILIAN use resulting in load shedding for hours in almost every city, shut down of Industries, lack of power for running pumps in Agriculture, shut down of IT sectors etc. Why do we have to suffer economically when India can stand proudly with any other developed country? Who can be held responsible for this state of affairs?

We need cheap energy and this deal could make it possible. The government should close this deal as soon as possible.

Friendship with USA is going to help India a long way.

Desouza, coal is hardly the right option given its contribution to pollution and global warming. This is being debated the world over, wind energy is in no way anywhere near enough to keep up with the energy demand in India. It is at best a supplement to the primary source. We have thermal power plans running at full production capacity all over, there is no other solution but to adopt nuclear power for future energy needs.

Srap this nuclear deal
by Dheeraj Akula on May 27, 2007 04:12 PM  Permalink

We don't want this nuclear deal.

Scrap it.

It is a "deal" for US. It is not a "deal" for India. The nuclear deal is designed to cap India's nuclear program, as openly acknowledged in the debate in US.
