100% literacy in Tamil Nadu. Hmmm never heard of it. In Singapore it is spoken by around 8% of the population and that is because a lot of Tamil labourers were forced by Britishers to go to Singapore. Tamil culture dominant in Sri Lanka and Malaysia that is also not true. Sri Lanka is dominated by Sinhalese and Tamilians are just a minority there and so also in Singapore and Malaysia. Most of the Singaporeans are of Chinese origin. A Language does'nt become great because of having 3000 years of spoken history. I think English has a lot lesser than 3000 years of spoken history but I guess that is the language everyone wants to study.

Without knowing the Tamil history, literature and culture you people are saying bad words. it is not good. You are spoiling the national unity by degrading a Indian language, culture and people. It shows your culture and heridity.

1. It being official language in these states just mean that more of your people went there. Nothing more nothing less.
2. Just proves that Tamil is an older language. Who said older the greater?
3. So did the Persian rulers, the Barbarians etc. So are u comparing Tamilians with them?
4. Bull shit. Only Kerala does (even that is about 90%).

1. Yes Sure...Same like aryans occupied Ganges Vally. 2. The first printed document in India is in Tamil. Did you know that. Search the datas regarding the germen person printed that. Sure you will know the greatness of Tamil. 3. The oldest vegitarians are Tamils. THe ancient literature of tamil shows that message when vedas talking about holy sacrifies of animals in the name of God. 4. Yes Agreed
i have been to banglore & i found it was a dirty city. never mind bombay being dirty & polluted & overcrowded, but at least transport system is great (trains, buses, autos etc.)and people r great too. dont compare bangalore or any other city to bombay. and yes hindi is a national language in case southies dont know.

No need to fight over Bangalore is good or not. It is definitly one of the better places in India. Yes of late the popolation has increased and pinched space. But still there is hope as Metro is to set up here. The IT sector has contributed very well to the city. I fore see this city developing on the lines of Singapore and Sanghai. Over every thing I say the people in Karnatka are basically good. Please say any place / city bad, we can work to make it better. By the way I am a Punjabi.

See the official languages act, you idiot. It has been posted in another link below. Hindi is NOT the National Language. U ignorant fellow. A new airport and metro is coming up in Bangalore FYI
I hope and sincerely pray that for once the indian politicians will uphold the virtues of patriotism and take this threat of terrorism seriously (esp after the recent Al Qaeda broadcasts which strangely Rediff has not covered) instead of the current minority appeasement programme that they seem to be currently embarking on. Every Indian citizen also wants the media to play a responsible and impartial role in what is a very real threat. Its no secret that many muslims owe loyalty not to their country but to their ummah and its high time we in india woke up to this reality. Further, even though muslims never give rights to their own minority population, they are the most vocal in demanding rights for themselves... is the media blind to this? And lastly why is a 'egalitarian' religion like islam demanding reservations based on castes?

Peopl are mindlessly churning out HATRED on such forums without thinking that they are well educated and well qualified.
The news item is about security of B'lore but why most people are accusing North Indians and Hindi language ??
It baffles me ... After 60 years of Independence, we still don't have even 10% feelings for our brothers across the states ?
We don't need Islamic terrorists to bomb us. We will do that ourselves.
Osama Bin Laden has rightly said; "Al Qaida should not waste its money & resources on India becoz the leaders of India themselves will help us in disintegrating India". Thats how he wants to achieve pan-islamic state from Morocco to Indonesia.
So, please think about what outside world is expecting us to do !!

Great Krishshhhh ....
I salute your tolerance ...(almost spat on a person who spoke Hindi at Ooty).
This shows your stupidity. Ooty is a tourist place & people from all states visit it. If the person talking doesn't know english & if he is a North Indian, what are his options of communicating ?
Have you ever moved out of your state TN ? Had you worked for few years elsewhere in India, I bet you will not have the same level of intolerance for others. That may be the reason for your hatred of Hindi probably !

that's the thing...travelling opens the mind. India is a lovely country. Every nook and corner belongs to all of us. Cauvey never discriminates between a Kannadiga or Tamilian.
We should work hard with full cooperation to make it a top nation, instead of fighting on useless and pity issues.

Mr. Anand if you don't feel any need to learn hindi then why should a person from North India will show interest in learning any of south indian language.
A person who is needy will learn it. And "Bhaiiya" means elder brother.Similar to "Anna" in tamil. You yourself is giving respect to north indians.
There is only one entity "INDIA". nothing south ,north , east or west in it.....

Let's stop the discussion on Abhinav's positive note. I'm a kannadiga and I think we should learn the language of the place where we live. Like the old saying - Be a Roman in Rome. You will only ease tensions when we try and learn the local traditions, cultures and languages. Be an Indian. Imagine if a foreigner read this debate... he'll think we're crazy to fight like this among ourselves. Be united folks... live, tolerate and learn!

Dude, Tamil Nadu acts like it is not a part of India at all. Most people from other parts can speak at least a smattering of Hindi. Tamil is an outdated, archaic language with little literature. Look at the gnanpith list and see for yourself. A language does not grow by throwing out words from other languages. Learn from English, the one that you hold more dear than your own mother tongue.

It is your mistake buddy. You have made a language which is not from INDIA , the official language of India.
There is nothing wrong in learning a language. A person who will go to Japan will learn japanese, it is because he needs it.
You know every person in India just cares about giving a happy life to his family. People work hard to earn their livings. They leave their family and travel distances.
Whether north indians or south indians they don't want to leave their respective places. But they have to . I hope you undersatnd what I want to say

Sunil, the most untrustworthy people you can ever come across are Malbaris i.e from Kerala.
I have lived in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka before moving to England, in Bangalore most of the companies won't even employ malayees because of their back stabbing character and untrustworthy behaviour-First try to know what people think about you before commenting others.
The way tamilians speak English is much much better than any malayee, you malbaris are known for funny pronunciations.
Has a malbari you must be aware of your people%u2019s living condition in gulf and also must know it's pathetic.
In Middle East you must be aware of what malbari girls are upto and they are the brand ambassadors of your state.
In Bangalore if you go to Indra Nagar,Ulsoor and Domular most of the houses are owned by tamilians who migrated to Bangalore some 60 yrs ago, have a look and tell me who lives in ghettos.

Dear Sunil all people in Kearala spoke a form of Tamil 300 hundred years ago .Read your history simple spoken Malayalam is a form of Tamil. The Namboodiri Brahmin Migrants encouraged the Bastardisation of the Tamil language form the 12th century onwards to establish themselves in their new homeland . This was later encouraged by the royal family during the Pandyan /Cheran wars. ( that is why the Malyalees call the Tamils Pandis) Speaking some form of a different language from Tamil maked your subjects loyal to you . The Spaniards and Portuguese Royal household did the same thing too. It was only around three hundre years ago that the court language changed from Tamil to Malayalam. Kerala ,Sri Lanka and the present day Tamil Nadu were part of ancient Tamilakam , The Chera kings of Kerala were staunch defendents of Tamil and the Tamil Language. large sections of southern Karnataka and Andhra was where kodun Tamil was spoken ( not proper Tamil). I find it strange that al the other south Indian lingustic groups come here and run down the Tamil people and the Tamil language whithout any provocation. They try to impress that their languages are form Sanskrit . They are not they borrowed heavily form Sanskrit and Prakir languages to differntiate their languages from their Proto-Dravidian/Tamil/old Tamil mother. This is why they are called Dravidian languages . They have many old Tamil words which are not used in current Tamil but can be found in literary Tamil. These languages are

cntd rich languages in their own right but by runnig Tamil down ortrying to deny the uniqness of Tamil which has a rich litreary tradition indpendent of Sanskrit does not benfit anyone. Twmil has the least amount of Sansrit comapred to the other Indian languages it is nto 50% but around 18 to 20% but most of these word need not be used as there are pure Tamil words and high Tamil hardly has any Sanksrit. Current tamil doesn ot throw out any words but unnecessary use of other language words are discourged and if these word are to be used they have to follow the Tamil grammatical rules so whats the big deal about this . I think all Indian languages are rich in sweet in their onw way. Ireally dont see what all these has to do with the orginal discussion . Al of a sudden out of nowhere the Tamil language the Tamil people and then the Ltte is all brought in and run down , I think a lot of people here seem ot be having a lot of hatred towards other people religions and lannguages which are not their own . Just learn to like humanity for its sake and you are all now adults and dont bring in all the prejudices and hatred that your parents and friends stc taught you , Kannada is a very old and rich language and so is Telugu and Sankrit bye and take it easy and dont spread hate

Wherever we go we dont have slave mentality. We dont live like second class citizens like you guys do everywhere. We are dictating terms in Central governmnet now. And in Singapore, Malaysia one of most developed nations - we ensure that our's is an official language. Tamil is printed on currencies and everywhere in these contries. In lanka we almost have a seperate nation. Is Hindi a official language of any country. NO . Not even India.
We have single handedly kep the hindi demon at bay. AND IT IS BECAUSE OF TAMILS THAT ENGLISH IS THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF INDIA. THE ENTIRE INDIA WAS TERRIFIED BY OUR BRAVE ANTI HINDI AGITATION IN 1967. What about you guys?
