Has the Brand IIT has been marketed adequately in various other countries ? If yes , we may create more IITs in converting all ranking Engineering colleges in India.
we won't require more IITs/IIMs. The more the no. of IITs the lesser the value for them. If you want to have good and prestige institutions, keep them with different name and different governing body i.e independent of IITs/IIMs. Please don't diminish the image of these prestigeous institutions by increasing their number.
I have been hearing this news about increasing the number of IITs from few of my friends. I am a fellow IITian (IIT-Madras)& right now doing my MS from the Ohio State University. Ofcourse friends who have done their bachelors from RECs are very happy to propagate this news that'll make them IITians in future...at least they can say they are from IIT-X, who cares. I just wanna ask one question to those who are in support of this idea, IS THIS GOING TO REALLY IMPROVE THE TECHNOLOGY IN INDIA? Retrospecting out history, I would say that most of the IITians come to US for higher studies & later on settle in US (more bucks...eh). Ofcourse that does not help India at all. If this is the case then obviously increasing number of IITs is not a logical solution to this. I would not like to give a logical solution as it will go against mu own freedom and will be against my juniors from IIT. But definitely increasing IITs would mean, hey dude I went to a grocery shop...got discount because the shopkeeper was a classmate of mine from IIT. Is that what we are heading towards in future? I wanna make a strong statement here saying, "This would definitely dilute the superiority of IITs".
There is no question that more IITs are the order of the day. IITs have always been the most sought after of institutions in India. However people who miss out on that entrance test, fiercely as it is contested, are not definitely worse. It is just that it's not their day or maybe due to the lack of a mark or so. Hence it makes sense to give a chance to the burgeoning talent across India. Our so called second string is as good and sometimes better than many of the IITians and definitely better than many around the world. This initiative augurs well for the all-round development of education in India.
I dont think so we need more IITs. Instead the funding to the current ones should be increased for research work and infrastructure. Making the number large will just make IIT loose its value and worth.
We need mor IIT's. But upgrading REC's to IIT's and also keeping the quota system for the state as it exists in REC's will definitely dilute the quality of IIT. If the government prefers to convert, the converted REC's should function like an exsisting one.
having more IITs will certainly dilute the institution's competency. but considering the population of our country i think there are still a lot of brains left out who can do more if they join the IITs.
This is an issue which has been there for quite some time now. And the solution does not lie in gross numbers. IITs have carved out a niche for themselves, and it simply because of the students and the faculty. The new IITs would need to match the quality of education and facilities, which does not seem to be coming.
They are quite good in number and the government should try to keep this place outside their purview of politics. PPl ! It is not just more IITs to provide better education etc; that can still be done with our huge REC base.
