IIT is Quality and not Quantity
by Vinod on Oct 20, 2003 10:43 PM  Permalink

Its Nonsense that we want to built roam in one day.the quality which IIT have maintained uptill now how can the new remixed colleges can do. Government one side wants to cut short the budget on IITs and one side promises to support other new IITs is quite contradicting.

I don't agree with the name of IIT given to such colleges.

Yes the number of IITS should be increased......
by ambuj kumar on Oct 20, 2003 10:40 PM  Permalink

As i am a student of IIT kharagpur,I know actual reason of success of IITians that is vast infrastructure.I know now-a-days JEE is not able to filter actual cream students. How can we say on the ground of only two hours paper that the student get through JEE is much intelligent than who couldn't!!!There are many students who are much intelligence than us ,but due to lack of infrastructure, they couldn't make themselves for what they were capable! In this way,India is losing human resources....There should be around 25 IITs in India for better development.......Thanx alot!!!

improve quality of existing iit's
by abhinay dubey on Oct 20, 2003 10:39 PM  Permalink

instead of setting new iit's it's better to improve research level in existing iit's. research is field in which india lags behind. every year many super brains of india go u.s. for higher education.

no more IITs
by Rajeev Seetharam on Oct 20, 2003 10:22 PM  Permalink

Instead of setting up more IITs govt can invest money in improving the education system across the country, the existing enginnering colleges should be revamped in order to get quality engineers, the govt should also ban starting of new engineering colleges.

Need more IIT''s
by ramu on Oct 20, 2003 09:57 PM  Permalink

Yes, we need more IIT"s to produce calibre candidates and fulfil many student ambitions in our country. We have to upgrade REC"s as soon as possible, without stopping by word only.

Leave IITs alone
by nish on Oct 20, 2003 09:53 PM  Permalink

I truely believe that the quality and reputation of IITs will be compromised grossly, if government converts REC's into IITs. All those who do know about a bit about IITs would appreciate the fact that they are much more than an institution imparting engineering education.

I do not see any point in creating new IITs especially when there is so much scope of improvement in present state of affairs of the existing IITs. If the objective is to make high quality education available to talented individuals then there are better ways to do it. They can increase the intake and improve infrastructure so that it supports the increased number of students. Or may be, they can start more sessions (like fall, winter & spring sessions in US).However, just to name some institution as an IIT does not look any better than a politically motivated plan.

Has anyone in the government ever given a thought about state of institution that have cropped up in hundreds, in states like Karnataka, Maharashtra etc.

have they thought if there enough jobs for all those who pass out from these jobs? and above all, have they asked themselves,Do we really need so many engineers???

A case for no more IITs
by kiran on Oct 20, 2003 09:44 PM  Permalink

Do we need more IITs?
If theIIT is assciated with excellence then the logical answer is yes. But there is another side to this question, and this is that nothing worthwhile or the best is sustained when this phenomenon is replicated without bound. As with the natural order of things so it is with the institutions that can sustain excellence. This may sound elitist but the big question is how do we sustain the excellence that the IITs have built at a great cost.
In order to do this we need first class faculty with first class researchers and students. As it is the IITs are not finding good researchers within the country, having to find it mostly abroad at a great cost. Will having more such institutes improve the situation? The answer is most certainly not.
We need to build good second level institutions such as the RECs, good engineering colleges in the private as well as the Govt sector. The second level colleges must be upgraded continuously to produce a pool of first rate engineers. The IITs can draw upon this enormous pool of engineers and future researchers who will form the environment to sustain the excellence that has of late become synonymous with the IITs.
