I truely believe that the quality and reputation of IITs will be compromised grossly, if government converts REC's into IITs. All those who do know about a bit about IITs would appreciate the fact that they are much more than an institution imparting engineering education.
I do not see any point in creating new IITs especially when there is so much scope of improvement in present state of affairs of the existing IITs. If the objective is to make high quality education available to talented individuals then there are better ways to do it. They can increase the intake and improve infrastructure so that it supports the increased number of students. Or may be, they can start more sessions (like fall, winter & spring sessions in US).However, just to name some institution as an IIT does not look any better than a politically motivated plan.
Has anyone in the government ever given a thought about state of institution that have cropped up in hundreds, in states like Karnataka, Maharashtra etc.
have they thought if there enough jobs for all those who pass out from these jobs? and above all, have they asked themselves,Do we really need so many engineers???
