No more IIT's Plzzzz
by Abhisake Saha on Oct 21, 2003 04:12 AM  Permalink

To add to the technological progress of India we don't need to increase the number of IIT's.If we need technological progress then we need to improve the quality of others colleges and provide them extra facilities. If we increase the number of IIT's then IIT's won't be the same IIT which we know.I don't know weather this will add add to technological progress of India or not but will definitely add to the downfall of IIT's.Being in IIT KGP I know that the course in IIT is quite tough and has gotta huge syllabus. So instead of the top 3000 brains if we top 9000 com to IIT may be they won't be able to maintain pace with the IIT standard which will give negetive results instead of positive.

we don't need more IITs
by victor on Oct 21, 2003 02:35 AM  Permalink

we need to build better infrastructure with the current bunch of devoted engineers. We don't need 7 more IITs to produce more brainy engineers for the foreign markets (read US & Europe).

No more IIT's
by sashi on Oct 21, 2003 12:43 AM  Permalink

I had the privelege of talking to a professor from IITKGP who was formerly a member of the JEE committee. His view which i completely agree with is, it is better to start an IIT from the scratch and inculcate the culture like IIT-Guwahati. Whether Roorkee likes it or not, it will never be thought of as an IIT. to make institutions of excellence please do not think that a name will be the short cut. Just because we name an institution MIT/ IIT it will not be one. Kindly do not destroy the only powerful academic brand name in India. for those aspirants of IIT who think an increase will help them get in, my advice as a former IITian would be they are better off trying harder for limited seats than getting it easily with more IIT's as eventually their value would have diminished in any case. So please do not harm years of hard work in Brand building.

Regards
Sashi.

do we need more IITs?
by srikanth on Oct 21, 2003 12:39 AM  Permalink

yes, our population is increasing day by day and we do need more IITs to cater to the demand for premier engineering colleges. The new IITs should be given time to establish themselves in the industry. The govt. should look into the postion of IIT( Guhawati) and then decide further.

converting RECs into IITs wouldnt make sense as the recruitment procedure is entirely different.

Alumni from premier institutions like BITS(Pilani) and IT-BHU have carved a niche in the industry and do not really need the IIT tag; though some might not agree.

Do we need more IITs - Part II
by Ganesh V Jois on Oct 21, 2003 12:31 AM  Permalink

I held off on Part II because I wanted to see what others thought. I find that there is a great deal of opposition to the creation of more IITs on the ground that there will be dilution of brand equity, erosion in quality etc. I suspect that these arguments have been advanced by those who managed to get into IIT and want to preclude others from such education. Therefore, in somewhat of a reversal of my earlier position, I now propose that instead of renaming the RECs as IITs, the government should start five absolutely new institutions that are NOT CALLED IIT. Call them what you will but make them much better than IIT so that these new institutions become the envy of the world. Many readers have pointed out that it is the faculty that makes an institution great. I agree. Increase the budgets of the non-IITs and hire some marquee professors of Indian origin from Stanford, MIT, Harvard, Berkeley etc. Make the admission standards into these non-IIT institutes even tougher than the IITs by according a certain weightage to innovativeness. In addition to scoring the points on an entrance exam, make it compulsory to present an engineering project at the time of admission.

Do we need more IITs
by sanjeev on Oct 21, 2003 12:24 AM  Permalink

I do not agree with your argument. You can never compare IIT with MIT. MIT is primarily a research-based univresity, whereas IIT is mainly a ungraduate school with very little emphasis on research. It is rather shameful that we have only 7 IITs (That just provides decent ungrad education) for a country of over 1 Billion people. It is difficult for me to believe that we can provide quality education to only 2000+ people in such a huge country. Only research-based institute in India is IIsc--probably we can compare IIsc to MIT.

NO MORE IITssssssss
by sugunan on Oct 20, 2003 11:48 PM  Permalink

Hi...I strongly oppose the idea of introducing more IIT........it simply lowers the standard of the eduction in India. Till this mich years students from IIT's have been considered top..genious......If students of lower grade are also given the same title then belief of getting good students from the colleges are lost...... which finally leads to the fall in the job oppurtunites of the cream layer too...

So please stop doing such an idiotic thing.....Instead the government can concentrate in increasing the standards of the existing colleges by

making the students go thru a tough carrier and allowing only the capable students to pass out.....

Also i request other colleges not to request for an IIT qualification and instead try to make themself better qualitatively.......

No way!!!
by Saif on Oct 20, 2003 11:41 PM  Permalink

Being a student of IIT, I believe that in creating more IITs, the Govt. will definitely dilute its strength and standard. The way out can be by increasing the number of seats at the existing IITs rather than upgrading RECs to IITs. Lets leave the IITs aside. They have their own value as they are a class apart from the local junta. The cream that comes to these institutes are the best brains of India, hence let them have their own air. There is only one MIT, one Harvard, one Princeton, one Oxford and one Cambridge, so lets leave the IITs at seven only, what say???
