Do we need more IITs
by Amit Chakraborty on Oct 24, 2003 12:28 AM  Permalink

Not at all and at any cost. This is just a politically motivated issue by our Prime minister since the national election is heading soon. It will surely please people from those cities where the new IITs are supposed to be built, but surely degrade the status of IITs. IITs are reputed because they have got only limited number of students which are the best in India. If each and every institute becomes IIT, then the quality of students entering there will obviously degrade due to the additional input of students who otherwise would not have qualified to study in IITs. As a consequence the output of IITs will fall making IITs of no status symbol to the international community. People from all front should oppose this move, although I feel, in a country like India, where political parties never oppose any move which has some popular aspects fearing cut in votes and hence once this has been proposed, means no parties will oppose it. For example, Nitish Kumar, the central minister for accidents (Railway) has even dared to divide the eastern zone to make an additional zone to his constituency just to please his local voters although this causes enormous loss to the overall income of rail

RE: IIT'S
by Arun on Oct 24, 2003 12:05 AM  Permalink

You are right Sir,
Here is a larger view,
You will never hear Americans (Bill Gates) saying that Chinese or Japanese software engineer are good.......... why only IITians.............Are nobody else in this world as hardworking and intelligent as them.................They are just inflating IITians all the time because a Japanese or Chinese would prefer to work for his/her country........For IITians, going to US and work there is a great achievement..................And America needs cheap labour to face competition. (Sorry not all,There are many IITians here and are making us proud).
Yes,You are again right proper concern and attention should be given to other professions. I know only one thing that tag of an institution whether of IIT or anyother institution cannot take a person very further...It depends on the attitude and capabilities of the individual which differs......IITians thinking they are breed apart is just like fooling themselves..........We have more unsuccessful IITians than successful IITians (Accor. to their own defination of success)

IITians always say that it is a best institute of world..........
Fact is it is not............
If it is so,why don't they do their M.Tech and Phd here.

So improve the conditions of present IIT'S
Give concern and attention towards other professions and primary school education.
Or if possible keep IIT's for MTech and Phd's may be it can serve our country better and not merely be seen as human resource provider.

NIT to IIT
by furkan khan on Oct 23, 2003 11:51 PM  Permalink

If at all this upgradation is to be done then it should be done based upon the promise and potential of the institutes.

Like NIT TRICHY>>>>>

1.In the recent survey in India Today it was ranked as the 8th no. engg. college in India.

2. Autonomous status since 22 years....Which no other NIT is enjoying.

3. ALL India entrance test for MBA & MCA.

4. Record placement in the years of slow down also.

5. Recently declared as the best college for science users.

6. Best software technology park of India declared by AICTE.

7. Best Infrastructure among all NITs ..

Don't go for numbers
by Ravi Trivedi on Oct 23, 2003 11:43 PM  Permalink

Numbers are not always important, but, if Indian govt. has some reservation, regarding numbers, they can increase the number of seats in each IIT. I think it would be a much more practical solution. To raise an REC to the IIT standard, would definitely, dilute govt. attention towards present IITs. Since, all the present IITs are very strong, in terms of infrastructure and has enough scalability to accomodate more seats.

So, don't go for numbers, as "Everything that can be counted, not necessarily counts".

NIT- - - - - >>>>>>>IIT
by Amit on Oct 23, 2003 11:37 PM  Permalink

If at all this upgradation is to be done then it should be done based upon the promise and potential of the institues.

I think there are no NITs other than NIT trichy is having the potential and the best infrastructure to be as IIT ..

It is enoying the Autonomous status since 22 years....Which no other NIT is enjoying..

Then other than this Instt. only IT BHU is at par with IITs...

I think no one can ignore these two institutes when it comes on to upgradation.

yes we need more IITS
by swetha on Oct 23, 2003 11:07 PM  Permalink

for a ever growing population of india ,we need to extend over technological prowess. In today's competition students fail to get into IITs just by margin,it doesn't mean they are not fit enough to get into IIT ,just the no of seats are less, by creating more IITs we are going to ensure that more no of bright students are going to have access to the exceptional education offered by th e IITs.In addition it will also improve the standards of some REC to meet the standard of IIT education. So in any case it's a boom for us as Indians,we will have more intellectual brains to harness, more if more IITs means more to India's pride and our neighbour's envy!!!!!

my comments on whether to have more iits
by anupama on Oct 23, 2003 10:53 PM  Permalink

well i dont think that there should be more iits because it will reduce its importance since students will start taking it lightly.already all the nits which are doing so well should be maintained as they.because i feel they can definitely not meet the standard of iits.so govt should pay more attention in improving existing iits & nits instead of forming new ones
