It is a great move. Upgradign the quality of anything would never make anything cheap. We would movwe up the ladder in the international scene and soon b a more valued destiantion in the international market. with the world becoming a global village ,this is essential as diefferentiation would be better affected with improvement in quality. dr. m. v. shetty
it will the biggest mistake commited in the history of INDIAN education.Even though it is true that some students miss the chance to study in these premiere institutes, you can not demand for increse in their no.it will only result in degradation of their high standard. The genious brains are developed only because of the intense competitions these institutes demand .and for those who fail to get through it ,NITs are always there. So in order to give more chance to students having caliber, government should think of improving standard of NITs and not increasing no. of IITs.

i need no more iit .i need not have any more iit not beacause it will be diluted, i need not have them beacause the iit-ians have not yet crossed the barrier of mediocracy.by about 50 years they have not yet produced any scientists like j.c.bose,p.c.roy,c.v.raman,meghnad saha,p.c.mahalnobis,j.c.ghosh or satyen bose, produced by calcutta university in its heydays in some fifty years.iit-s are producing some carrierists choosing their future proffession through iit,iim or iis.a group of students highly ambitious of their financial aspect of future, having no love for science,no immotion since their childhood.as because they are mainly from high middle class family and from childhood deeply engaged in exam-oriented study through private tutors or coaching-centers they have no concept of our real india and i am sure the emotion that the last-century stallwarts had for their motherland and her people the current iit-ians do lack of it.and that's the reason why iit-s can never touch the glory of last-century's calcutta, madras or bombay university.i think not on iit-s govt. should concentrate on the traditional universities ,yes for birth of emmotional scientists not for ambitios robots.
AS A FORMERLY IIT madras phd research student in metallurgical engineering, i would like to make some comments: yes, we need more IIT'S in our country. In future IIT'S should only offer research degrees like MS and PhD also IIT's should provide more remuneration and facilities for advanced research work to the professors and research students in order to avoid the real brain drain. PROFESSORS HAVE TO GET JOB SATISFACTION IN IIT'S VERY SINCERELY YOUR'S vijayaram raghavan thoguluva full time PhD research student in mechanical engineering UNIVERSITI PUTRA MALAYSIA SERDANG, SELANGOR MALAYSIA.
I think that the Governemnt should realize that just giving name of IIT to an existing institution won't make it IIT really. In IITs the "IIT system" is one which make it exceptional from other institutions, not just the name. So, mere giving name of IIT to a institution is not important but the quality of faculties, students and the availability of resources should be on priority. If the regional institutions are going to be IITs, then i think after a while there won't be any exceptionality in the name IIT. So no need of any more IIT in India if you keep your IIT to be standing with its own bright image in the world.
Since some of the big cities do not have IIT centers and keeping in mind about the growing population of intelegent students and future of the country, more colleges /centers to be opened to encourage more competitive young generation.
Why not bring more RECs (NITs) and other state-level institutes to the level of IITs? Focus should be on better infrastructure development instead of siphoning funds to new IITs. Overall development of engineering institutes is necessary at this juncture. Education should be free of bias and creation of IITs mean unnecessary discrimination between IIT and non-IITs. The gulf between IITs and non-IITs need to be bridged rather than widening it. New IITs will not reduce unemployement and from any perspective - short-term, medium term or long-term, such initiatives should be discouraged.
In 1970s only a few engineering colleges were there in Tamilnadu. In early 1980s number of colleges increased to 100 or so. In 2000 total no. of colleges has gone to 250. Now there is no scope for the engineers coming out of the colleges. The same way if the number of IITs are increased the quality will come down.
