This article itself says that Periyar was born in an affluent family and that he was living in a major town. He could certainly have acquired a university degree or have become a lawyer or an engineer if he had chosen to. If he or his father had decided that he need not study beyond Std. 4, why blame Brahmins with much poorer economic status who valued education and rose up to occupy such careers? KS Ramakrishnan
