In the returns ofmy wife filed for FY 1999-2000, she claimed for a refund of Rs.6000/-. IT Dept lost the copy of Rs. 60000/- invested in PPF and sent letter asking to pay balance tax of Rs.6000/-(The tax rebate on Rs. 60000/- is Rs. 12000/-). We replied with another copy of the PPF Challan with a request to refund the original Rs.6000/-. In spite of many reminders till date, we have not received the refund whereas refunds for further yers have been received. We made representation even when the department conducted the 'Refund Mela' but to no avail. In some cases refunds below Rs. 1000/- are not received. My request to the Finance Minister is to amend the rule in such a way that if a refund is not received before filing the next return, provision should be made available to treat it as 'advance tax already paid' and adjust the amount while filing the next return.
