Ratnakar Mankad
Leander Paes and R. Krishnan
by Ratnakar Mankad on Jul 22, 2016 09:28 PM

This article tries to compare achievements of two greats of Indian tennis. It is unfair to both.
Krishnan was an icon in my student days fifty years back. There was no professional tennins for him. He played some of the most memorable singles matches at Wimbledon and Davis Cup tournaments. His career spanned quarter of a century as he did not have any pressure of professional tennis.
Leander is an icon for two generations after Krishnan. His career achievements are as glittering and great as those of Krishnan. He has faced the pressure of a professional career over almost all of his playing career. He has maintained physical fitness of the highest order for quarter of a century, something Krishnan ws not known for. You also need to factor in his great illness that he overcame and then made a comeback to professional tennins. In this he has combined the achievements of Krishnan and Lance Armstrong.
When Krishnan retiered, people said we have seen end of an era that is unlikely to be repeated. Sports writers world over will say the same for Leander when he hangs up his boots. And yest, History reats itself!
All this said, I will end with just one sentence. We are unlikely to see the likes of either Krishan or Leander in the game of tennins.
